The great Benin Kingdom is known for having preserved its cultural heritage and guarded it jealously over the years. Below are some very strange pictures from the coronation ceremony of the new Oba.

It was obtained from a dialogue with a source in Benin, that the festivities which is full of pomp and pageantry, are very revered.


There are myths that at some point in the cause of the coronation, the Oba and the kingmaker who is crowning him, gets to disappear and only both me would know where the crown is placed on his head.


The source who spoke under anonymity, told our correspondent that these photos are from Ogbelaka and Eguadase Royal Guilds of Benin Kingdom. The dance is called Ekassa. According to the source, the dance is done by only men dressed in white robes and they would do it daily until the coronation is over.

At that momentin human history Europeans were the leaders they brought technological advancement, in such cases when two cultures meet the weak one will eventually bow to the strong and superior.

Culture as a way of life includes religion,way of dressing,entertainment,favours and vices

Ok, unfortunately, the coronation is seen or heard once in a long while. Similar to the death of Roman Catholic Pontiff, there is an enclave that participates in the adoption and coronation of the successor, the representative of Peter (The Rock).

Anyway, these images appear to be among the first to be publicly released. I enjoyed it.

I think South West Lagos has similar rituals once similar position is vacant. I pray the incumbent lives a long time.

I stumbled on the event. Great tradition. The most beautiful in all of Africa. Lots of foreigners present and me I didn't even know such a magnificent ceremony was happening.

He brought Modernization, prosperity and development to Benin.
