[b]Corruption killing sports in Nigeria, Amokachi alleges

•Says Coaches demand N250,000 from young players

By Chris Ochayi ABUJA—

Ex-International, Daniel Omokachi, yesterday, opened a can of worms in the nation’s sporting arena, alleging that Nigerian youths cough out as much as N250,000 each to get into the U-17 team in Nigeria.

Amokachi spoke when he joined forces with coalition of Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, operating under the aegis of National Support Groups for Good Governance, NASUGG, protesting in support of war against corruption in Abuja.

Amokachi who hailed the Department of State Services, DSS, over the arrest of alleged corrupt judges, in Abuja, described the sport arena as den of corruption. Amokachi, while addressing Senators Barnabas Gemade and Ovie Omo-Agege, when the group stormed the gate of the National Assembly, said corruption is endemic in sports.

According to him, “My name is Daniel Amokachi. I have said I will support the movement, because in my field which is sports, corruption is endemic.

“Corruption has invaded sports so deeply that even in FIFA headquarters in Zurich, we saw how the world stood up and said “Enough is enough!”

We saw how the president, Sepp Blatter was not spared. He was removed from office because integrity matters when it comes to the constitution.

“President Buhari is one who doesn’t take nonsense when it comes to fighting corruption. I concur with everything he says.

“For instance, in Nigerian football today, the youths, when invited to the national team, a coach will ask them to bring N250,000 each to get into the U-17 team when he already has the talent. If a person has talent, he should be allowed to showcase what he has in the interest of the nation.”

“A small team cannot win the Nigerian league because all the people in Nigerian football are corrupt. If a referee is bribed and a match is won here, the match cannot be won there.

“The judiciary is not above the law. Mr. President is on a good path’’, he said.

In his reaction, Senator Barnabas Gemade, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Housing, corroborated Amokachi’s position on the rot in the sports sector.

He said, “I’m very particular about your comment on football because I’m one of those who love football. And I started a club called BCC Lion, which you know.

“And I have witnessed all that is happening in the sports arena. And I know that corruption is killing it just as it is killing all other aspect of our national life. We must fight corruption’’, Gemade assured.

Abeg, I will prefer we call up Obasi ahead of the other two, and Ogu too, if we won't invite Success I don't care, with Obasi we would have five good wingers so it would be better In fact, and then invite Adi to make it 4 strikers

During Atlanta '96 i was on semester break from the University tongue

Anyways, the young shall grow.

Talking abt Obasi, i dnt think he can flow with the rythm of Iwobi-Mikel-Iheanacho. Moses may try but Obasi? I doubt. I would prefer we pick Adi instead.

Obasi, Gbolahan salami and Fanendo Adi.... Hmmmm.. May the coaches choose well... smiley

With Obasi we have a winger who can also drift centrally with ease... With Adi, we have a big no.9.

Success' and moses' invitations are still not confirmed but I do hope they are invited shaa... *if they aren't... No wahala still smiley *

Meanwhile, You even try sef... Me start to dey watch, follow and read football since 1999 starting with Nigeria 99 as a 7yr old.... smiley

My big bro who was 10yrs+ at the time played a big part in luring me into sports esp.soccer as I was more into "books and only books".... Always searching thru libraries and studies of any kind... smiley I've been that way ever seen till today but sports also grew with me.

Football and sports became one of my pasttimes since then.... wink

I recall things like *in larry's voice* "The Attacker called Utaka!", "Dodooomayanaaa!", "The pastor called Taribo West!". "The weapon of mass destruction, obagooaal!". Bimbo Adeola aslo spoke like Larry.

Hmmm Glory days of Nigerian football. When i would wait to listen to bournvita sports special on OGBC2, with Larry Echiejile, 7:45 - 8:00am, before going for lectures. Then he had not started brila radio.

AFRICA'S BEST REF FOR NIGERIA VS ALGERIA WORLD CUP CLASH, NEW KICK-OFF TIME 5PM

Referee Papa Gassama

Africa’s best referee for the past two years Bakary Papa Gassama from Gambia will be in charge of next month’s World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Algeria in Uyo.

Gassama, 37, and who has been an international referee since 2008, is one of the most respected referees in Africa. He has already been appointed as referee for this year’s CAF Champions League final, second leg clash between Zamalek of Egypt and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, taking place in Alexandria on Sunday, 23rd October.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has
won a protest it quietly launched following the
release of the official match appointment, which
set the kick –off time at 5.30pm.

“The information we sent to FIFA was that we
wanted the match to start at 5pm; we were
surprised when the match appointment was
released and the kick –off time was set at
5.30pm. The NFF immediately protested and
eventually, on Wednesday morning, FIFA agreed
that the match will start at 5pm,” NFF’s director
of competitions, Bola Oyeyode, disclosed.

Next month’s Russia 2018 qualifier between two of the fiercest rivals in African football will see Jean-Claude Birumushahu from Burundi as
assistant referee 1, Marwa Range from Kenya as
assistant referee 2 and Gassama’s compatriot,
Maudo Jallow as fourth official.

FIFA have also appointed Jean-Olivier Mbera from Gabon as referee assessor, Ghanaian Anthony Baffoe as match commissioner and Nicholas Chumba Musonye from Kenya as security officer.

Nothing like tension again.

Those days the shout of goaallll!!! when Nigeria scored was always thunderous. Especially mid night games.

In the last game against Zambia, as Iheanacho scored that second goal. I listened no one shouted in the neighbourhood. I looked at the scoreline it was reading: Zam 0-2 Ngr. I couldn't hold back and I shouted goaall!!.

My wife was like "are u ok? almost 1min after d goal was scored". I told her it was not the goal that made me shout bt the fact that we are leading Zambia in Ndola 2-0. grin
