LordIsaac:
12 years in the profession. Modeled many. About to retire to take up another degree. 5 years ago, I fell in love with an SS2 student of a school. I was 21. So I resigned from that school and went to another. 3years later...I noticed I became over protective of her and her teenager characteristics became unbearable. I spoilt her...created a monster as a result. Tried to be firm later, but it was too late. As of today, we are no longer together, but she still misses me. I could no longer tolerate her...love deteriorated to pity, pity to anger, anger to hatred....The lesson from all these is, please leave those girls alone as a teacher. They may be physically matured but emotionally, you'd just be abusing a big child. I take full responsibilities for my actions, and from then on, I vowed never to date my student!

Hmmn...LordIsaac,

Thanks for sharing. Quite an enlightening story. Though you didn't explicitly say it, I'm guessing sex was involved. For such is the only way to create a 'monster' out of a female teenager.

The truth is, I don't blame you much as you were only 21 at the time. At least I recall my tendencies at that age grin

Another truth is that I've equally been tempted to tow your line but I won't. In the school I teach, two girls in JSS 3 have taken to me. They show it openly that they like me and even encourage me to call them 'My Dear' whenever i'm addressing them. Sometimes, they offer me snacks and I only accept when I'm 'too hungry to reject'.

I try to be cautious though. They are both more mature in their looks than age or emotions so I just can't mess with them. Last Friday, one of them tried to sit on my lap, which I disallowed while the other asked to know where I live.

It would be wrong of me to indulge them in pre-intimacy or actual sex at such an early age. I won't forgive myself when they become 'monsters' or 'nymphomaniacs' in the future. I just teach, entertain their jokes, accept their tasty snacks when I'm too weak to resist and take my leave.

Hmm! Finally found where I can call a thread of solitude on Nairaland. I salute y'all teachers, "ajíméfun"(albeit marker board is now in vogue), the real nation builders!

Started the profession right out of secondary school back then in 2007, at first because of condition and circumstances but as the years rolled by, the passion for the profession grew exponentially!

I think the secret of being a good teacher is loving the profession not minding too much the meagre pay or the ungrateful parties(could be the students, parents or even the school management).

During this duration of over 8 years in the profession, there has been a quite number of times when I almost quit out of frustration, Mehn! A lot has really transpired (Oun oju ti rí, enu o le ròyìn). But I think my love for the profession outweighed the frustrations.

However, the joy of teaching lies in seeing the work of your hands bearing good fruits. Seeing your students succeed and attain great heights in life......

A nice thread to follow, and thanks for creating it.
Well I can say am an accidental teacher. I studied Geology and as a young graduate then, my ambition was to be in the water resources dept as a hydro geologist, but things didn't work out that way. Got into teaching in a secondary school and long after, had my PDE (Professional Diploma in Education), and today am a qualified Teacher. I must confess that I love teaching, but I don't love the job. My reasons for not loving the job will be explained some other time.
I love teaching, hence I put in my best in delivering my lessons, with series of step by step instructions.
A teacher is trained to teach the students and not to cheat them. A teacher who delivers half baked lessons, misses classes, fails to use instructional materials etc, has only succeeded in cheating his/her students. I hope no teacher in this forum falls guilty of this. My watchword is "I will teach but I will never cheat my students"
A lot effort has to be put in to make the students understand and to love what you teach.
The teaching profession is quite tasking, but more tasking is handling the kids in pre nursery, nursery and the primary classes. I give Kudos to teachers in these categories. For me am better where I've always been since I became an 'accidental' teacher i .e Senior secondary school teacher.
Twelve years in the profession, am still trying to fall in love with my job. My students both past and present will never believe I don't love the job, and I will never convince them of my not loving my job.
My utmost joy is when I hear their testimonies or read their commendable posts concerning me, hence I've made up my mind never to disappoint them.
Still love teaching, but little reason to love the teaching profession.
Stay blessed folks!

Good evening teachers. Something last week thursday, it actually made me to have a rethink about this profession.

A jss2 student came with his mum to school, they both stormed the principal's office with the mother threatening fire and brimstone. After some time, the principla sent for the junior english teacher. On getting to the office, she was told that the boy reported her to the mum that she hasn't entered their class since the term started. This happening on the 5th week. The was surprised, she asked the boy if he really said that, the boy stood his ground that she doesn't enter their class.

The teacher sent for the class prefect and two other students from that class.

prior to this, the principal has already started to tongue lash the teacher, calling her names from incompetent to wicked.

Well, the prefect and the students came; they were asked to bring there English notes, the teacher was asked to bring her lesson too.
The student's notes and the teacher's lesson note corresponded.
The students testified that the teacher frequents their class, even when she does have them.
The boy started starmmering. The form teacher was summoned, she brought hwr register and it was seen that the boy is rarely in school. The mum couldn't say a word, the principal started to tongue lash her and the boy.
The teacher there and then tended her resignatiimon letter. The school mgt and some of my colleauges pleaded with her not to take what happened to heart. But she was hell-bent on leaving. Her reason is; The school management can't stand up fpr there own. Since the principal said she is incompetent, she rather leave than to receive a salary she didnt work for. I felt the principal went too far, and the teacher is also going too far.

challenges like this are abound to come up once in awhile. No profession is void of challenges.

But me, i fear some children ohh.

First and foremost,

Welcome Annibeteye and Mathefaro. Great to have you with us. smiley

I quite agree with the submission by Mathefaro. A major challenge with the teaching profession is Passion Vs Pay. Not many teachers who are passionate about what they do earn enough to live comfortably. Take me for example. I truly love to teach English Language and Phonics but my take home pay is quite shameful. The only consolation comes from my students who appreciate me and are eager to learn.

And Annibiteye, you are by far my senior in this profession o! I equally look forward to earning a post-graduate diploma in Education in the future. I would really love that but still hoping and praying for a sponsor to come my way. It would take me eons to save enough for the program from my stipend-salary. Plus I concur with you. A teacher should never cheat his/her students out of academic knowledge. That would be unprofessional and inappropriate.

As for Olanna's story,..... shocked Wow! Some students can be indeed wicked. That was a very unfortunate incident and I empathise with that teacher. I pray something of such never happens to me.

It is quite a shame that the school's management couldn't defend one of its own. But as for taking a break? Who then would teach in the classrooms? Just asking o! I'd rather prefer my compensation in cash. wink

Thank you all for sharing. May we all thrive in our career.

Amen!

English Word of the Day

NUDNIK /'nu:dnɪk/ /nood.nik/

Meaning - A persistent and boring pest or person.

Example - Going through the diary section, I discovered that some Nairalanders consistently talk about themselves and their daily activities but fail to entertain with their stories. Yet they post everyday. You may call them Nudniks.

Some don't set out to entertain you. They just keep a diary.

Oh i know! It was really just an example. I for one regard myself as a 'nudnik' for the type of diary I keep. Reason?

1 - I do not post in easily readable English and 2 - My posts are strictly about me and often boring.

I sure hope no one takes my earlier example of the word 'Nudnik' personal. If so, I tender sincere apologies in advance. undecided

I went and checked your diary.... then I said to myself " what a nudnik! ".
Then I saw the words in bold and was like cheesy
I didn't take it personal. Just that too often people bash diary keepers as being too shallow, boring or airheads.
Sometimes it's true but then it's their life. That's someone's life that just got labeled.

And thanks for the word.
Now I know what to yell out at obnoxious people when my kids are around..... nudnik wink

cheesy Many thanks for the compliment. I sincerely regard myself a nudnik with no regrets. grin . I lead a simple life so I do not expect to record entertaining details on a daily basis.

And thanks for reminding me of the vocab word 'Airhead'. It's been long since I last used it. Also, shame on those who do not only poke their noses into other folks' diaries, but go ahead to belittle them. That's so not right and I ain't like that.

And last, goodluck with impressing your kids grin

ENGLISH PHONICS/PHONETICS

A Quick Tutorial on the 'Schwa' 'ə' Sound

The Schwa sound - 'ə' is one of the sounds and characters of English phonics/phonetics. Interestingly, it is the most common sound in English Language.

Examples

Father = Fa.thə or 'fɑ:ðə (Phonetic transcription)

Mother = Mo.thə or 'mʌðə (Phonetic transcription)

Weather = Wea.thə or 'weðə (Phonetic transcription)

Whether = Whe.thə or 'weðə (Phonetic transcription)

Offer = O.ffə or 'ɒfə (Phonetic transcription)

Stammer = Stamm.ə or 'stæmə (Phonetic transcription)

September - December (Sep.tem.bə, Oc.to.bə, No.vem.bə, De.cem.bə) or (sep'tembə, ɒk'təʊbə, nəʊ'vembə, dɪ'sembə) all phonetic transcriptions.

Open = O.pen or 'əʊpən

Water = 'Wa.tə or 'wɔ:tə etc

The Schwa sound also modifies words like 'The' , 'Of', and 'And' when they feature in the MIDDLE of sentences and NOT used to begin them.

Example = Normally, the word 'The' is often transcribed as 'ðɪ' but when not starting a sentence, it becomes 'ðə'.

Normally, the word 'Of' is transcribed as 'ɒf' but in the middle of a sentence, it becomes 'əv'.

The word 'And' too normally goes as 'ɑ:nd' at the beginning of a sentence. But in the middle, it is written as 'ənd'.

Thanks for reading my brief tutorial about the Schwa sound and how it is used in English language.

Meaning - Reckless, rash or irresponsible.

Example - Artkat762 was way too social during his undergraduate days in Lagos State University. He drank, smoked and did 'nacky-apako' with many young ladies. In other words, Artkat762 was quite harum-scarum during that period. But he has since repented. grin

Example 2 - The proprietor's speech began with so much seriousness, but later rollicked into an intreractive session filled with jokes and story-telling.

The form teacher is to blame. Your student rarely comes and you have not called his parents to know if he/she is alright?
There's usually a time fixed for parents and teachers to interact when teachers tell parents the challenges their children are facing so as to correct it on the home front.

The principal should have found out from the teacher what happened before belerating her.For you to be a principal means you have a wealth of experience which includes patience, modesty and wisdom. To me the principal has issues. From waging war on one of your staff to waging war on a parent all in front of the child. He's better off as a comedian. A principal should know his staff personally and check up on their performance. Its only a principal that knows his staff well that can assess and rate them.

The parent is to blame for not checking up on her child ocasionally at school. Some parents see school as a dumping site.

The teacher's self worth and esteem has been highly hurt. To get shouted at and insulted in front of your students is one of the harrowing experiences teachers face which has to be addressed. I salute her courage for leaving. She deserves a better school, one which will respect her person and give her a chance to be heard.

Forgive me guys. I'm sorry.

I know it seemed like I jilted this forum for no apparent reason.

Truth is I've been miserable for two weeks now.

Can't contribute in the authority of a teacher anymore.

My employer sent me a text message early in the morning asking me to see him at my earliest convenience.

That meeting turned very sour for me. He simply thanked me for my service stressing the school couldn't afford to pay me anymore.

I was utterly shocked!

I taught 3 subjects to 3 classes without complaints and that was supposed to be my reward?

Anyway, I'm done feeling miserable about it. Got to figure out the next plan.

Cheers!

No you aren't unlucky. This is time to re strategize. if you know your worth and you are good at what you do, re package yourself and start sending out Cvs. by next term, something better will come.

I suffered same thing earlier this year. i felt my world has come to an end, but two months later i got my present job, which pays higher than the first.

Above all, take it to God in prayers.

Hi smiley!! You got scarce, and I wondered what kept you away. Now, I know better.

In everything, give thanks to God. See this as a stepping stone to greatness as I see your joy coming soonest smiley.

Sometimes, things go rough for us to know our true self worth, and note that, only the strong survives challenges.

The year has few days to go. See the remaining days as an opportunity to evaluate, plan and repackage yourself..

Inasmuch as updating your CV and searching for another job is important, just maybe, it's time for you to be your own boss.

Don't underestimate the power of parents. You should work on attractive flyers which you can get across to parents of your former pupils, neighbors, etc and plead to take their kids on private lessons.

That maybe the beginning of your turning point. It's well, Artkat762.
