How State Governments Can End The Herdsmen Menace For Good! by obongitiad(m): 10:32pm On Oct 22, 2016 |
This is very simple. With these four steps, the States can end the herdsmen menace for good and even make some money from it in this recession: 1. Make at least 1,000 hectares of land available for ranching. 2. Invest at most N500 million to fence entire land and build the ranch. 3. Sign a 30 years partnership deal where the State gets N30,000 for each cow killed or sold, and 2 to 5 litres of milk from each cow. If the ranch sells or kills 1,000 cows per month, that's N30 million for the State. And in one year, that's N360 million. So the State makes back its initial capital investment in 17 months. 4. Ban nomadic herding and cattle transportation in the entire State. No need to involve the Presidency in this issue. Nigeria would be better if our State Governors could think well. Thank you. 1 Like |

YOUR PROPOSAL IS DEAD ON ARRIVAL, I SEE THIS AS AN ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE GRAZING BILL THROUGH THE BACK DOOR. COW HERDSMEN SHOULD ACQUIRE RANCHES IN THEIR STATE OF ORIGIN OR RESIDENCE LIKE ANY OTHER FARMER OR ANIMAL BREEDER ( LIKE FISHERIES, POULTRY, PIG REARING, SNAILS, GRASSCUTTERS ETC). THIS IS PRIVATE BUSINESS AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH, NO SPECIAL CONSESSION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO ANY GROUP. GOVERMENT MONEY SHOULD NOT BE USED EITHER, ANY DEFAULTERS SHOULD BE PROSECUTED. LOCAL GOVERMENT AUTHORITIES SHOULD ENACT LAWS AGAINST SUCH NOMADIC ACTIVITIES AS THIS CONSTITUTE SERIOUS HAZARD TO OTHER MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. 17 Likes 1 Share |

obongitiad: You can't place a ban without creating an agency to enforce the ban. If we use Ekiti as an example, when Fayose placed a ban on them, the Nigeria police refused to enforce the ban hence the governor had to create an agency to enforce the ban. I don't see local governments having the capacity to create such agencies except they have to give it to thugs like they always do. I even know of some local government that already placed the ban and the order is not obeyed. |

obongitiad: You points are invalid. 1a. They are private businesses and as such can buy their own land. They could form co-op to buy land. It's not governmen's responsibility to raise cows. They had grazing reserves in north according to former President Obasanjo let them go reestablish them. (If state citezens do want it I see no problem with it) 1b. What govrnment needs to do is enforce property rights of farmers and herders. Arrest them for trespassing and destruction of property. If they have to sell off cows so be it. If cattle rustling such issue herders should be branding their cows anyway. Then state can put cows. Then states or feds can put brands in database. 2. I agree private farmers need to invest in fencing. Barb wire is cheap and effective. 3. They could potentially make cash back in taxes but market more effective. Again if it was such mone spinner why arent their more in north that has vast majority of land to dedictate to this sort of projects? 4. This is easily possible. It's inefficient mode of transportation when train cars exist. 5. President can stay out of it as long as he doesn't ask for national grazing reserves. He can't play sugar daddy and not denounce violence. 1 Like |

I just feel Nigerians are socialist in nature.. From tge way most of us talk. . We want governments to do everything We are a capitalist country and u should know what to expect If a state in the north can have sharia.. i don't see why a state in the south can't ban Muslims or ban grazing.. . Southern leaders are just too soft 1 Like |

l would rather suggest that state governments empower their indigenes with the knowledge of cattle ranching & they run it in their personal spaces, there are kenyan farmers who manage their 100 dairy cows within 3 plots of land..is no rocket science! 2 Likes |

The fulani encroachment down south serves 2 main purpose ; 1. To expand Muslim fulani/Hausa settlements in the south as a precursor to establishing vassal townships of Sokoto from where they will, in the nearest future, claim indingeship as they did in Jos, Nassarawa and all middle belt states. 2. Following from above they will then demand political recognition as valid citizens of occupied southern states and push for political and legal reforms towards establishment of Fulani political, religious and traditional offices to be created. 3. In light of the achievement of 2 above, they will demand for the conversion of the state recognised Fulani traditional authority to be converted to an Amir and their settlements within the state an Emirate of Sokoto. 4. After the Emirate is approved, they will then lobby the fulani/Hausa controlled FG to declare their Amir as the Supreme Traditional and Religious leader putting the existing southern leaders under the Emirate. It is an old and efficient tactics of expanding the Caliphate that worked brilliantly to transform Ilorin, Bida, Zaria and Nassarawa to be under the Caliphate realm. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

They should find another job if they cannot ranch in the north.Everywhere in West Africa, they are constituting a nuisance. They are at the forefront of the war in the central Africa Republic. It would have been seamless if they were bringing a progressive culture. But we all know that primitive backwardness and barbarian culture is what follows them about 4 Likes |

The economic exigency of fulani expansion down south arrives from two main evolving factors; 1. Desertification and irregular rain patterns up north has forced the fulanis to move further south. Their expansion down south is made possible due to the ongoing deforestation of tropical forests that once acted as natural barriers to cattle grazing due to the prevalence of Tse-tse fly. With deforestation, once forbidden lands are now looking favourable to grazing. 2. The south's economic advantage puts us as the largest and most profitable market for the Fulani cow breeder. The land down south with its adequate rainfall and now deforested tropical rainforest, has transformed th south to both a adequate breeding ground for cattle and the more prosperous southerners provide a ready and proximity to a more profitable market. In th light above, the respective southern governors must as a matter of urgency start encouraging cattle ranching among their people. Every incentive that will promote cow rearing in the south by southerners must be encouraged. This will not only provide employment but also get rid of the pesky fulani. The state govt should also look at regulating cow rearing and ensure in the nearest future strict legislation are passed guiding the consumption and retailing of fit ranch reared animals and ban the TB infested fulani cows from the butcher's stand. Rather than carving out southern lands for fulani illiterates as suggested by the afonja OP which happens to be be same line towed by the aggitators of grazing bill, the south must take advantage of the new opportunity offered by deforestation (down south) and Desertification (up north ). 4 Likes 2 Shares |

GBTYO: Your mind is wasted on internet forum only. You need to be in our government submitting bills. Nigeria states need popular Initiative system in place. If we did start people can implement great ideas we have on nairaland faster. The states would know what we want potentially because the could see popular action. 1 Like |

Baba, that is not the first time I am hearing that. Even the biggest fool on earth will not believe the fact that only 500 cows can be housed in a land that is 100 KILOMETERS LONG AND 100 KILOMETERS WIDE. Bros, you dont know what one thousand hectares of land is. So you want one cow to be housed in 2 hectares of land abi? I can see that you really went to school. Thank you. mikolo80: |
