chkil:Inventory: 26 Olifant MK2s , +- 130 Olifant Mk1b and a handful Mk1As In total there are about 203 Olifant minus a number of Olifant MK1As destroyed by Rooivalk during training exercises!! In Service: 34 Mk2s,MK1Bs and MK1As not sure the exact number of each in service. Tanks are not really conducive to Southern African conditions, thus we strictly use them for training......Down here wheeled vehicles are king! 2 Likes |

There is no super weapon in battle/war. Your doctrinal approach to using your men, weapons and equipment; and the ability of your team to assess and understand the enemy and their capabilities and shortcomings give you the edge. And of course, no one expects the use of dane guns or Panzer tanks in today's battlefield environment. Henry240: 3 Likes |

The Coronet was designed by the Russians to take out Any Tank .Placed in the right or wrong hands it will wreak destruction.Regardless .The MI Abrams Tank sold to the Iraqi army is a step lower in terms of protection compared to the US version and the version sold to the Saudis. Having said that Houthi Rebels have captured and destroyed these same Tanks. No Tank regardless of its protection is immune. The first MI Abrams Tank to be disabled was done by an RPG that hit one of it's vulnerable spots. |

Henry240: Yes we do called the Presidential Protection Service which encompasses the Presidential Protection Unit, Counter Assault Team and other auxiliary units eg dog units, technical, investigation, intelligence. PPU is further broken down into Alpha and Bravo which protect the president and deputy president respectivcely, with Bravo further rotating to protect former presidents/deputies. You're probably looking at the photos and thinking that is overkill. It probably was, but Alpha is made up of a mad bunch of political appointees, in fact the man on the far right with the three stars on his shoulder is the current commander of PPS, General Dladla. Under him the PPS has grown to even regularly include the Special Task Force which is well documented on these pages. The uniform has also changed to a militaristic colour scheme. So their behaviour at times is just down to hubris in fact Bravo is a much calmer unit, but their training also includes STF elements such as Vasbyt so they're well trained. The motorcade has grown under Zuma to number 20 vehicles now (10 sedan BMWs and 10 motorcycles). Did you get this from a blog post? |

Henry240: Thats from a foreign visit by Zuma where the PPS was replaced with the Tactical Response Team (TRT) of the National Intervention Unit (N.I.U). The same guys that are busy cracking down on campus protest at the moment, a.k.a amaberete ("those with berets". They are basically South Africas version of a SWAT team, meant to full the gap between regular Patrol Officers and the Special Task Force. Why he went to Cote d’Ivoire with the TRT and not the PPP or the Recces no one knows. The sitiation in the city was very tense at the time and may have necessitated the use of the Recces again, but its not really a job for TRT It happened once and never since. No explanation given - probably an incidence of Empire Building which happens from time to time within the SA Govt. Different organizations compete with one another so that the organization and its leadership can gain bigger budgets and more power. This kind of thing has become a problem under Zuma who plays his senior officials against each other to prevent them forming a cabal and removing him.
