By: Kingsley Omonobi Abuja -Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris yesterday called on the federal government to make the recruitment of 10, 000 police personnel which is currently going on nationwide, a yearly exercise to enable the country meet the minimum United Nations stipulation of one policeman to 400 persons. The IGP made the disclosure in Kaduna just as Governor Nasir El-Rufai condoled with the IGP on the loss of some Police officers in the recent crisis in Godogodo, Jama’a LGA of the State. Idris who was speaking during a working visit to Kaduna State, noted that the current strength of Police personnel run short of United Nations recommendations of a Police officer to four hundred citizens even as he assured the Governor that the Nigeria Police will continue to discharge its statutory responsibilities in accordance to rule of law and international best practices. He expressed gratitude to President Mohammadu Buhari for the current recruitment drive in the country and hoped the recruitment will continue on yearly basis to augment the short fall arising from retirement and death while in service. He pleaded with the Governor to assist in the search and rescue of Police officers missing in action in the attempt to mediate in communal conflict in the state. He further commended the Governor and the good people of Kaduna State in their proven assistance and cooperation to the Force in the onerous task of crime reduction and management in the State. Responding, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai expressed gratitude to the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force for the determined efforts to ensure that peace and security prevail in Kaduna State. He commended the exemplary professionalism displayed by the Police in tackling insecurity in the state. While urging the IGP to nip in the bud the sources of crime and insecurity throughout the Country, the Governor emphasized the compelling need for a comprehensive national solution to kidnapping and other violent crimes which have destructive effects on growth and development. He further stated that peace and security are critical to development. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/igp-wants-10-000-police-recruitment-exercise-yearly-program/ 1 Like |

The Police Service Commission, on Thursday, announced the promotion of four Deputy Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Commissioner of Police. The new Commissioners of Police are; Posi E Ajunwa; Akinsanmi Francis Ayo; Kenneth Ebrimson and Akpoebi Agberebi Egbuson. The Commission also approved the promotion of 17 Assistant Commissioners of Police to Deputy Commissioners and 78 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners of Police. The two day Meeting presided over by the Chairman of the Commission, Sir Dr. Mike Mbama Okiro, a retired Inspector General of Police, also endorsed the promotions of one Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police; 12 Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendent of Police and one Assistant Superintendent of Police to Deputy Superintendent of Police. Two Chief Superintendents of Police were appointed Assistant Commissioners of Police on acting capacity, two Superintendents of Police to acting Chief Superintendents of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police to acting Superintendent of Police, six Assistant Superintendents of Police to acting Deputy Superintendents of Police and twelve Inspectors to acting Assistant Superintendents of Police. The Commission also rejected the recommendation for special promotion of one DSP and one Inspector and returned the recommendation for the appointment of a Deputy Commissioner of Police to Commissioner of Police on acting capacity for proper presentation. It also withheld the special promotion of nine other senior Police Officers for failure of the Police to provide convincing reasons for such promotions. The Police Service Commission also approved the dismissal of six senior officers for various offences ranging from impersonation, forgery, insubordination, negligence and disobedience to lawful order. The dismissals were part of the decisions taken by the Commission on 55 disciplinary cases brought before it. The promoted Commissioners of Police had earlier today, October 27, 2016, appeared before the Commission in Plenary where they were subjected to questions on the change agenda of the Nigeria Police Force. http://tribuneonlineng.com/promotion-police-get-new-4-commissioners-police-109-senior-officers/ |

The Police Service Commission has suspended the ongoing recruitment of 10,000 personnel into the Nigeria Police Force following pressure from the Senate and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris. The decision to stop the exercise was taken by the commission about two weeks ago, shortly after it concluded the screening of 110,469 shortlisted candidates, The PUNCH learnt on Thursday. Investigations showed that the PSC management was in the process of finalising the recruitment process in Jigawa State when the IG ordered the police representatives at the meeting, the Deputy IG in charge of Training and Development, Emmanuel Inyang, and another senior officer to return to Abuja immediately. This, it was gathered, forced the commission to suspend the recruitment as the police management needed to be represented and carried along in the exercise. It was learnt that the IG’s move might have been informed by the pressure by some senators, who wanted the recruitment to favour their geo-political zones. The Senate Committee on Police had earlier demanded the suspension of the exercise in a letter to the commission, saying the recruitment should be determined by the candidates’ local governments and not states. The committee chairman, Senator Abu Ibrahim, had also written to the Presidency on the issue, arguing that local government should be the basis for the recruitment, ostensibly to strengthen community policing. Ibrahim, in an interview with journalists, said, “We want the selection to be based on local government because of community policing. For the rank and file, we said nine persons should be selected per local government while for the officers, we said it should be based on state. “All we are saying is that the selection of personnel from inspectors downward should be based on local government basis to advance community policing in this country.” A source, however, said the real reason for the committee’s demand was to ensure that the recruitment favoured the geo-political zones with more local government areas in the country. The source stated, “The Police Service Commission did not suspend the recruitment on account of the letter from the Senate; we don’t report to the Senate. “The exercise was suspended because the IG recalled the police representatives at the meeting to finalise the exercise and since we need to carry the police along, the commission decided to suspend it until the issues raised are resolved.” Our correspondent learnt that the commission observed the Federal Character provisions in the recruitment to ensure even and equal representation of all states in the police, but the senators were allegedly not satisfied with the criteria. The Head, Media and Public Relations, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, confirmed the suspension of the recruitment, saying some issues needed to be resolved. “We have suspended the recruitment; that is all I can say for now,” he said over the telephone on Thursday. The Inspector General of Police (I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris has admitted a grave inadequacy in the Force’s ability to protect lives and properties of Nigerians. Idris disclosed this when the Senate Committee on Police Affairs visited the headquarters of the Force on an oversight visit. Idris said that one of the major challenges which the force had was the clashes between herdsmen and farmers. He told the committee that the 300,000 men in the force was not enough to oversee the entire nation., He said that kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery, terrorism, militancy, economic sabotage and religious extremism were other security challenges confronting the police. He said that the police had handled 108 kidnapping cases in June, 111 in July, 84 in August and 77 in September. He noted that kidnapping had become a trend in the country where young persons were actively participating. The I-G said that the existing 300,000 police workforce was inadequate to effectively police the country. He said that the country was far behind the UN standard of one policeman to 400 persons. Idris said that the Nigeria police needed more than the 10,000 men being recruited to bridge the manpower gap. “We need to increase the strength of the rank and file. “We also need more than the 10,000 policemen being recruited, but it is a gradual process,“he said. He said that inadequate funding and manpower had been the bane of the police, adding that adequate funding was needed for the police to effectively discharge its mandate. On welfare of policemen, Idris said that the police wanted to exit the present pension arrangement to enable it support its men after service. He said that the management had written to President Muhammadu Buhari to allow police retirees to have access to health insurance scheme after retirement. Idris said that if adequate funds were allocated to the police, it would perform optimally. Sen. Abu Ibrahim, Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, said the committee would consider the request of the police force. http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/10/27/ig-admits-inadequacy-in-nigeria-police-force/ brotundes: |
