NO. You speak English as first language at home when it is not the family first language you would be saying so many wrong things and don't even know ...and writing the same in English tests. But when speak English at home...what happens to your traditional language?....wouldn't you be helping to lose your culture? 1 Like |

It doesn't guarantee academic excellence in any way, shape or form. All it's good for is communicating to others in detail. Many university graduates are no different intellectually than the average truck pusher, the only difference is the graduate is more well read and if he invents or innovates something can put it into clear writing another person can easily follow to achieve the same result. 1 Like |

I don't think so. I understand better when I relearn what I study in English in my mother Igbo. The use of mother tongue in learning should be encouraged. 1 Like |

eph12:This can happen in any language. He's only using English as the example as it pertains to our immediate environment. It's highly possible in a classroom the truck pusher would assimilate faster than the graduate even in his own studied field (IQ vs Knowledge). Speaking good English is not the gold standard to academic nor real world excellence however it makes people automatically put one on a pedestal. |

yes of course, it helps. when you understand English, you'll be able to understand questions very well to give an appropriate answer. many students don't usually understand questions, because of their poor knowledge in English language. |

OP, English is not your first language....but an Official language. You are not a native speaker.... For example, if you were looking for a job @ UN, and there was a space where you were asked if English was your native language, are you gonna say yes that it was your mother tongue?...meanwhile u have already filled in the form that you were from Nigeria an African nation.....Is that not lies that got consequences....Just trying to correct an impression that English was a first language in Nigeria.... 3 Likes |

Richy4: Any language you learnt before 6 or I think 7 is your native language..... A French kid who moved to U.S. at the age of 4 for example, and is now an adult who can speak both English and French can say that his native language is English too. I don't know how to explain it in English, but I'm French its "Langue Matenelle" So yes indeed, you can say English is your native language as a Nigerian, if of course you can speak it well. |

charix:First of all, bad English in a learned environment is a major turn off. It takes a very patient teacher to look beyond the poor English in an exam script. In a country like Nigeria that has English as it's first language, it is important your English is good enough to pass examinations which is what the op is referring to as academic excellence. If the op has said career excellence or something else I would have said ok. We've been churning out half baked graduates in this country and this is partly because most have poor written and spoken English. Ask some to write simple letter and you see all sorts of grammatical blunder. Tell me what comes to your mind first? Won't you ask where did this one graduate from? Which means they shouldn't have |

English is not a native or first language in Nigeria. We are just short changing ourselve because the whole world knows we are not born with it. That is why our English accent is different and you have to learn accents of other Western countries. If you go to US or UK you have to relearn your English communication skills before you can fit in. 1 Like |

CHANNELStv2020:Africans would be really stupid if they spoke their different dialect in an official setting. If you didn't learn another man's language, nobody would have understood this you wrote. Now, Does another man's language makes you intelligent to converse with the world? Yes. Would you have known the meaning of stupidity and better express yourself if not for another man's language? A BIG YES!, Children who grow up speaking fluent English better express themselves where ever they find themselves, sometimes people have opinions and ideas but conveying it in speech is such a big problem. And they get marginalized easily because they lack conversation skill. The point for proficiency in English isn't fluency but the ability to express yourself, when you find that easy to do, then works in the class room is nothing but mere manipulation of words both in oral and written form. The chinese embraces their language but guess what, It's their lingua Franca over there so intelligence is easily attained but here in this part of the world English is our lingua Franca. Another fact is, English is the most official language worldwide such that, You must understand and speak English fluently before you work as Air traffic controller worldwide. |

Richy4: Lol, you wish. Do you understand what I mean by "Langue Maternelle" Any language you learn before you are 4-5 is your "Langue Maternelle" for example, A Belgian who speaks both Dutch and French and think in both Languages even tho he is from the Dutch part of Belgium. So yes indeed, a Nigerian can claim English as his first language, without any consequence at all. |

Richy4: And as for the "assignment" you gave me. .. I copied this straight from Wikipedia.. A first language (also native language , father tongue/ mother tongue , arterial language , or L1 ) is the language or are the languages a person has been exposed to from birth [1] or within the critical period , or that a person speaks the best and so is often the basis for sociolinguistic identity [citation needed ]. In some countries, the terms native language or mother tongue refer to the language of one's ethnic group rather than one's first language. [2] Children brought up speaking more than one language can have more than one native language, and be bilingual . By contrast, a second language is any language that one speaks other than one's first language. What is typed up there validates my point.. The language of your ancestors does not have to be your first/native language, and one can have more than one native language (L1) Hope you learnt something new today... Good morning 2 Likes |

Are we now trying to say we should neglect our local languages for English? Kids learn and speak English in school all the time, no kid should be deprived of learning and knowing how to speak fluently our local languages. It doesn't in any way affect intelligence, look at the Indians, Koreans, China's self, we see from their movies that they speak more of their language even their English intonation is bad. We try to copy everything English, I can't help but SMH when I see parents trying hard to speak English to kids all the time knowing fully well that it's English these kids will still go and speak and learn in school. If you deprive a child the opportunity to learn his local language you have also deprived his generation. If we continue to think this way, in 50years time our language would be on its way to extinction. 2 Likes |

Ugosample: The time you used in typing this bro... you would have used it to make a research for your self.. I am not gonna chat with you anymore because I guess u don't like to take correction...I just want to let you know that no one knows it all..... everyone is still learning till one dies...Five months ago i got to know that a female could be called an actor.... I did not argue the way you were doing now, I just went straight and checked it out on the search engine.....It could look minor to everyone but I was used to differentiating the genders....besides First language is self explanatory enough if you care to check....Have a good day man... |

Absolutely Not! It is well known that the best students speak their mother tongue fluently. Ability to speak one's mother tongue as first language helps you think critically and analyze other languages from a vantage point. 2 Likes |

lyterydim:With your poor grammatical proficiency, I did not expect you to make any contribution on a topic like this. Truth be told, as an anglophone nation, speaking English as a first language does contribute to child intelligence as it creates room for apt understanding of the subject taught. However, local language should be encouraged too. |
