Dear NAIRALANDers,
It is with heavy heart that I write this piece and I will appreciate your suggestions on the way forward.

I was travelling along idiroko Road on the 1st of October, 2016, on the fast lane near the culvert, when an apparently mad man ran carelessly across the road and before I could maneuver away from him, he was hit and got knocked down.

The windscreen got shattered and part of my car roof cave in. I however managed to stop the car and rushed down to the fallen man.

He was lying there by the median culvert and unconscious. I asked people to help get a vehicle to take him to a Hospital but nobody moved. They seem tobe enjoying the live drama. I then walked to the car, reversed and they help put him on my car seat.

I drove him into the nearest hospital, rolled up my sleeves and joined the Medical team to resuscitate the man. He looks unkempt and is apparently a wanderer.

By the way, I am a medical practitioner.

He was admitted and put on necessary equipment and medication. However, he remained in coma.

I thereafter went in search of people around who may identify or know the victim. Nobody has seen him before.

Later, I went to the nearest police station to report the accident, and an officer accompanied me to the hospital, then back to the station and I put down a statemen and was released on self recognition.

I took the man for a CT Scan yesterday to further investigate him while continuing other treatments.

It's been 4 days of the best medicare anyone can hope for and the man is still in coma.

The police are waiting and watching.
I am waiting, watching, praying and caring.
The man is just there.

What more can I do?

You have done the needful. All you have to do is search a bit harder for his family or people who know him. You are a good man

I appreciate your concern bro. The only people that can resurrect the man forever remains the police. However, I have a comprehensive document of everything I did to save Mr Unknown's life after the accident. The body is in the morgue and the police says if nobody comes forward after a specific time frame, they'll order for the body to be buried.

I am resting my hope on God

You are lucky the police is yet to charge you for culpable homicide, for failing to report the accident immediately until apparently a few days later.

You have unwittingly left yourself potentially wide open to their exploitation; because now left to them it may be construed that the cause death may not necessarily have been the accident; but possibly by a more sinister method which could have been stage managed in order to make it appear like an accident - not that I personally do not believe your story; but given situation of our country and how our police operate, you would be lucky to escape without them extracting their pound of flesh - i.e. food done come and they may likely chop.

In short, accidents must be immediately reported to the police in order to establish the facts and to avert suspicion; in fact I am surprised the hospital agreed to accept the deceased and even commenced treatment without a police report.

Many lives have unfortunately been lost because of this requirement, resulting in often the victim not necessarily receiving timely intervention to save his/her life.
Consequently, many major hospitals usually have a local police post within their facilities so as to minimise delay before police clearance - this is wrong because saving a life should take precedence but this is our unfortunate reality.

I admire all your efforts and sympathise with your situation and furthermore wish you all the best - hoping that this should serve as a lesson to anyone who may unfortunately fall in the same predicament.

UPDATE

Today marks 14 days since the accident involving a destitute. He has had the best of medicare but hasn't regain consciousness. CT Scan ssays no skull or brain damage.

I live far from where the incident happened 2 weeks ago. Today, I decided to move him closer home.

Here are some pictorials

I will appreciate your continuous prayers

And this made FP after he is gone?
If you had brought his picture and presented it to God in THE LORD'S CHOSEN MINISTRY HQ, Ijesha Lagos. You would have seen immediate improvement and more favour. He most likely wont have died.

God heals mad people, lame, deaf and dumb in the aforementioned ministry. And sick people represented by their pictures are also revived or receive healing.

Can guarantee if you asked the mad man, he'd have told you he preferred the streets than being confined to a bed by unimaginable pains with the stigmatization he must've received cause of his mental state.
"Caring" people around him?
I'd also *phonely* "care" about a stinking mad man if it was my job to do so, especially if I was paid huge amounts to.

Coldfeet:
.....but with caring people around him? Nice clean and warm bedsheet in a "cosy" room?

Cleaned and dressed everyday?

Looking at it from a lesser evil perspective, the unknown mans last days were better jare.

As Aa medical practioner you what it means when one remain in comatose for such a long time. Stay calm, pray, and carry your lawyers along. May God who bless all unseen efforts be you rewarder.

This is it... he hit a man and the man later died.
Now in sane climes, he's gonna be investigated and determined wether he was at fault or not.
Now, from what he said, he's an insane wanderer, so it's obvious he ran into traffic. + he's show of concern, driver will be given a slight reprimand ( this is cos a man died). Other than this, driver is fine and free.

The lawlessness in Nigeria is terrible. The first thing I noticed when I left Nigeria and came to the US was how very lawful the country is.

Last seen: 9:08am today. Meaning that you're still ok, alive and free. I'm glad.

That was a touching act you did right there. Owning up and taking responsibility for what happened. Because only a few Nigerians could do what you just did. I experienced a similar situation 4 years ago along Enugu-PH expressway but in this situation the driver of the bus was robbed and badly beaten, all of us in the bus pushed out and asked to lie face down on the road while the robbers drove away with the bus and our bags, precious belongings, foodstuffs etc inside. While the other passengers left the scene immediately I stayed behind with the driver who could no longer see, from the beatings he was given. When the police later arrived he was taken to a pharmacy shop for treatment which I paid for. I was there as his witness at the police station and also at Peace Park Transport main office. It was a long story but he came out of it fine in the end.

Ever heard of Near death experiences? These are experiences of the afterlife people in between life and death, such as the man in coma, experience. Many times some people are asked to return to earth, sometimes some people choose to remain in the afterlife after experiencing the beauty and love that exist there. While I was reading your story, I strongly felt that the man was probably having an NDE and the possibility of him coming back to earth to continue life in his previous state was slim. I strongly think this was not a coincidence. Maybe it was meant to happen. Your owning up to responsibility for what happened makes sure that your conscience is clear.

You'll be fine.
