1. Army raid on newspaper houses: In June 2014, the Nigerian army carried out
raids on distribution centers handling several of
the leading national newspapers. Various
newspapers said their delivery vans were
searched and vendors questioned across the
country, and copies of the papers destroyed.
An editorial in Punch said one of its distributors
witnessed “a group of heavily armed soldiers”
storming the cargo area of the Murtala
Muhammed international airport in Lagos and
searching all the editions waiting to be sent out.
The commanding officer said they were acting
on “orders from above” , said the paper, adding
that papers were prevented from entering Ekiti,
Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Edo states.
The Nation said soldiers told its distributors
they were acting on reports that attackers
were attempting to use the newspaper
distribution system to “ferry explosives to
wreak havoc”.
“They were civil but they gave us stern
instructions not to attempt to distribute our
copies,” said the unnamed man.
Witnesses said delivery drivers had their
mobile phones confiscated and were not
allowed to take the newspapers when they left.
The Daily Trust said some of its vendors were
arrested, and that a senior military figure there
had accused the media of “publishing and
selling falsehood”.
It said the raid followed a report it published,
accusing senior army figures of using army
land for personal use.
2. Immigration recruitment scam and death:
On March 15, 2014, 6.5 million Nigerians paid
an application fee of N1,000 each for
the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS)
recruitment examination. The tests were held
in one day, and the ensuing confusion and
crowding led to the death of 23 people.
At the Abuja National Stadium, over 60,000
applicants turned up for the recruitment test,
and after an early morning stampede at the
entrance gate to the stadium. A source at the
National Hospital, Abuja, said 10 people lost
their lives.
At the Liberation Stadium in the Rivers state
capital, a stampede occurred when the over
20,000 applicants tried to force their way into
the 15,000-capacity stadium, four people died
and scores were injured. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

3. Extra judicial killings
Amnesty international (AI), in 2014 released
video footage, in which it claimed that soldiers
were slitting the throats of men accused of
being members of Boko Haram.
The soldiers were aided by members of the
government sponsored militia commonly
known as Civilian JTF. The bodies of the killed
men were dumped into a mass grave.
According to Salil Shetty, Amnesty
International’s Secretary General: “This
shocking new evidence is further proof of the
appalling crimes being committed with abandon
by all sides in the conflict. Nigerians deserve
better.
“What does it say when members of the
military carry out such unspeakable acts and
capture the images on film. These are not the
images we expect from a government which
sees itself as having a leadership role in Africa.
“The ghastly images are backed up by the
numerous testimonies we have gathered which
suggest that extrajudicial executions are, in
fact, regularly carried out by the Nigerian
military and CJTF.” 4. Occupy Nigeria protests and soldiers: In January 2012, the Occupy Nigeria protest moved many Nigerians into the streets. This was ignited by a press release from the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPRA), announcing the government’s decision to officially stop subsidizing petrol. That single release provoked the revolt and nearly caused a revolution. The streets were filled with protesters and the government responded with force as the military was deployed. Many were shot and at least one person was killed in Ogba, Ikeja. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Oga Jonathan can't even remember what transpired during his administration. I think the only thing that resonates frequently in his brain is this sweet line, '' STEALING IS NOT CORRUPTION''. 9 Likes 1 Share

MORE 5. Boko Haram killings The Boko Haram insurgency which began in 2009 under the late Yaradua’s, when the jihadist rebel group Boko Haram started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria. In 2012, under the Jonathan government, tensions within Boko Haram resulted in gradual split of the group between Salafist conservative faction led by Abu Usmatul al-Ansari, and the more dominant, violent faction led by Abubakar Shekau. In 2013, over 1,000 people died as a result of the conflict. The violence escalated dramatically in 2014, with 10,849 deaths. 6. Corruption Another major type of abuse, under Goodluck Jonathan was corruption. Despite the lapses in security in north-eastern Nigeria, corruption was another major abuse Nigerians went through under Jonathan. The question remains whether he wasn’t able to stop it or he deliberately allowed it to flourish under his administration. Aides and ministers accused of corruption were either shielded or allowed to stay in their position. The granting of presidential pardon to former governor of Bayelsa state, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who was convicted of money laundering, sparked outrage among Nigerians. He also did nothing, until too late, when former Aviation Minister, Stella Uduah, bought two armoured BMW cars for N255 million. Former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki is also now under investigation for the arms scandal 1 Like 1 Share |
