The hope of President Muhammadu Buhari for external borrowing was on Tuesday dashed as the Senate overwhelmingly voted against his request to do. President Buhari had last week written to the Senate, requesting for the approval to borrow about $30bn as 2016 – 2018 External Borrowing Rolling Plan. However, when the matter came up for deliberation and was moved by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, the senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye indicated to lead a debate on the matter, but was turned down by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki. They did not even debate it before throwing it out. Not a good development. Throwing the entire proposal away is not the best. We need some of the projects that were proposed in the loan proposal.
