Erisco Foods Shuts Down Nigeria’s Factory, Relocates To China by Nobody: 10:18am On Nov 02, 2016
Erisco Foods Limited has announced the shutdown of its tomato manufacturing business in Nigeria citing an unfavourable operating climate which has escalated operational costs in recent months.

President/CEO of Erisco Foods Limited, Chief Eric Umeofia, who addressed a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday said the company had concluded plans to relocate the manufacturing aspect of the business to China from where finished products would be imported and sold to consumers in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

According to him, the decision to shut down the Nigerian manufacturing plant was taken after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum given by the management of the company to the Federal Government to compel the CBN to make available enough foreign exchange (forex) to assist in the imports of raw materials as well as the requisite equipment needed to keep the manufacturing plants running and also profitable.

The company had also demanded that the Federal Government compel regulatory agencies like NAFDAC, SON, and the Federal Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Investment to end the imports and dumping of sub-standard tomato paste in the country. “As from today, November 1, 2016 we have commenced the winding down of our tomato manufacturing business in Nigeria and it’s a decision that we have taken as the 30 days ultimatum has expired without our terms being met,” Umeofia said. “We are moving the factory to China from where we will manufacture and bring back to Nigeria while also selling to other over seas clients.

It pays us that way as a business because in recent months, our continuous operation in Nigeria has resulted in a loss of over N3.6billion investments.

“Because of the huge machines we have to move out, winding down will last us about nine months as we plan to first exhaust the existing raw materials we have before moving our equipment out to China. “It’s unfortunate that out of a workforce of about 2,000 Nigerians that we have, we will be dis-engaging about 1,500 of these workers as we need just about 40 staff to keep the Nigerian company running since what we will now be doing is just restricted to marketing and sales of imported products from our China plant. My business has been deliberately frustrated by the way the CBN has managed forex bidding and allocation.

They won’t give us forex to import machinery, machine spare parts and raw materials for processing Nigerian fresh tomatoes into paste in our Lagos factory and they won’t give us approval to use our own money (about $460,000) generated from our foreign operations to import our raw materials. They won’t also check dumping because of the powerful nature of the import cabals.

This decision is therefore final and there is no going back on it; nothing will make us to come back even in the future because we have found out that we can import tomato paste into Nigeria and still make huge profits,” he added. Umeofia said.

‎He said the company had similarly abandoned the Katsina state backward integration programme with the Certificate of Occupancy on the 2,400 hectares of land issued to the company returned to the state government.

Stupid Nigerian mentality. Government should ban importation of anything Erisco into the country. He's looking for foreign exchange to operate a local industry and we all know Nigeria is experiencing foreign exchange scarcity as a result of low oil output and prices. Business environment in Nigeria is harsh and requires total patriotism to resist temptation of going to already developed countries like China.

How unfortunate! Yet they are chanting diversification of the economy, agriculture, manufacturing and whatnot. Yet no attempt is made to create conducive business operating environments. The tribal and ethnic undertones cannot be disregarded as well; if he were hausa or muslim, d story would have been different.

Did u see this part? Or u have selective reading disorder? Are the enumerated concerns in the op not obviously designed to frustrate his business? So should he fold his hands and pull out of business because Nigeria is having selective forex challenges? Have u read anywhere that Dangote cannot access forex? Why not require d FG to encourage indigenous manufacturers? Dirty Afonja!

What? Lord have mercy on buhari and his useless team of noise makers. How can we survive this recession and develop as a nation when we keep destroying the few industries we have If Nigeria is not a zoo, will all these rubbish be happening Thousands more Nigerians have been sent to the over saturated labour market, loss of tax/IGR, increased loss of forex through importation, loss to farmers, loss to diversification. Is this regime on a mission to destroy Nigeria What is really going on?

The president has said it all, those who want to leave should leave.

You know our brothers with playing victims cards, I see many of them claiming Dangote was given access to dollars for his refinery but they overlooked the fact that Dangote Tomato factory stopped production too not quite long. Dollars cannot be provided for every Dick & Harry, you know how many billionaires would be created at the detriment of the economy?

Besides, politics and business is all about interests, when GEJ was there, you people were busy running around for his reelection bid forgetting your economic interests like things like this but Dangote seized the opportunity of his co-Aboki being in power to further his interests. Our brothers are poor politicians.

Are you alright What happened to your mental faculties? So he wont import raw materials again to produce goods or you think everything is sourced locally? Even where he said that his company made over 400,000 dollars from their foriegn operations yet he was not allowed to make use of it!

It's not government policy but there is no Dollar and I believe you should know. He can only access part of and not all of required foreign exchange simply because there isn't enough to go round. That's one of the sacrifices we must make in order to develop locally.

Hmmm, refusing him access to his own dollar is now a sacrifice that is necessary to the detriment of his business. Shouldn't that be a kind of misplaced priority?

Bad news everywhere.
It is pitiable what we are going through as a nation.

While it is possible that we will come out of this recession, the damage has been done already and economic revival usually takes years for what was destroyed in months.

See how long it took someone like Obama who was passionate about America to get them out of recession.

Don't be deceived when they say Nigeria would be better next year or in December or whatsoever. If this would be true, then it means, Nigeria will start taking steps to being better next year or in December.

Brace up people. Stay focused, stay passionate, work hard and feed your family. God help us.
