As workers and pensioners continue to suffer
severe hardship in Rivers State under the current
administration, Teachers in public schools in the
state have again lambasted the state governor for
consistently deceiving members of the public that
all workers in the state have been paid their salaries
up to date.
The State chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT Lucky Nkpogone maintained that some teachers in Rivers State are been owed seven months salaries even after completing their biometric exercise.
Lucky Nkpogone said teachers in Rivers State are
now finding it difficult to feed due to the refusal of
the state government to pay them their salaries.
The NUT chairman in Rivers State further said
teachers are the majority of civil servants yet to be
paid their salaries since April, 2016.
He begged the Governor to consider their plights
and pay them their due entitlements.
This plea is coming barely two days after the Rivers
State governor Nyesom Wike through his chief of
staff Emeka Woke told a church gathering in Imo
State that the Rivers State government is not owing
any civil servant in the State.
Some other workers in the state who spoke with
Versatile Reporters lamented the wickedness
melted on them even in this time of recession. They
explained that it was unfair for the Governor not to
have paid them despite the huge financial resources
he has so far gathered from internally generated
revenue, statutory allocations and loans.
Versatile Reporters recalls a confrontation between
the State Commissioner of Education and Security
Guards at the model primary schools built by the
Amaechi administration over unpaid salaries. Some
of the aggrieved security guards had claimed to
have been severely beaten and forced to reopen the
school gates by security details attached to
commissioner as they decided to lock the schools in
protest at the commencement of the 2016/2017
academic session.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC says
it is aware that some teachers in the state are been
owed salaries by government.
NLC State chairperson Beatrice Itubo said the union
is mediating to ensure that the State government
clears the backlog of salaries owed civil servants in
the state.
It may interest you to know that some workers have
earlier expressed lack of confidence in the ability of
Labour Unions in the state to compel the state
governor to pay them their owed salaries, accusing
the union leaders of been compromised by the state
government.

It's more than 7 months as most last received their February salaries. It's actually 9 months while pensioners are owed less.

He is not resident in Rivers State and you know in Nigeria people can write anything for politics. Here is a very credible link from Tide Newspaper owned by Rivers State.

The Rivers State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the
Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), has called on the
State Government to expedite action in the payment of
salaries owed its members.
Rising from a meeting yesterday, the SWEC, in a
communiqué, stated that it will call on its members to
resume work from the 14th of September.
However, the NUT said that if the State Government does
not pay what it called “the backlog of salaries” owed its
members, it will recall them from the classrooms.
“After due considerations, the trust the union has on the
Government of Rivers State, and for the interest of our
younger generation, the union hereby urges teachers to
resume schools by 14th September, 2016”, the
communiqué said.
It appealed that the government should as much as
possible clear the backlog of salaries from February to
August, 2016 owed teachers of Rivers State.

“That if the backlog of salaries owed to teachers is not
cleared from today, Thursday, 8th of September, to the
8th of October 2016, the union will have no other option
than to call the teachers out of the classrooms”, the
communiqué stated.
The communiqué expressed worry that promotions of the
teachers have not been implemented, adding that
“promotion interviews conducted are not released and
promotion interviews yet to be conducted”.
According to the communiqué, promotions interviews
carried out by the Universal Basic Education (SUBE)
Board in 2010, 1011 and 2012 have not been
implemented.
The NUT further noted that the Rivers State Senior
Secondary Schools Board (SSSB) promotion interviews
conducted for 2009 and 2010 have also not been
implemented.
It also listed the promotions not released by the SSSB to
include that of 2011, 2012, and 2013, while promotions
not conducted are 2013, 2014 and 2015 (SUBE), and 2014
(SSSB).
Earlier, the SWEC had commended the Rivers State
Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and the relevant agencies
for their interventions on the pitiable plight of teachers in
the state.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commissioner for Education,
Professor Kaniye Ebeku, in a meeting with the executives
of NUT, assured that dialogue was ongoing concerning
the payment of their salaries.
He further stated that the Rivers State Government was
committed to the welfare of teachers in the state.
“The Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration is a
responsible government, and undoubtedly committed to
the welfare of its workers”, the Education boss stated.

it pains me to say; it serves them right although some innocent people that did not vote wike is affected. Every one in rivers state know the character of wike but d majority decided to vote for him because of the hatred for Ameachi supporting APC, which to me is cool but why did they not vote the labour party candidate princewill? They should stop complaining joor, River state is PDP and wike will rule them for 8 years.

They are just starting, I think they all said WIKE is their only preferred man to be Governor. So why are they now complaining? If Bayelsa that has only 8 local government councils has been suffering their staffs with half salaries since dickson's assumption of office for the second term. So let PDP the best party keep suffering their staffs in River state....Until when Nigeria youths unite to say "NO" to all these old politicians both in APC and PDP, then our economy woes will keep increasing.
