Godmother:

My dd started that way too and also refused to nurse. I kept putting her to my breast; she would scream and reject it and it used to break my heart. I continued and five days ago she just opened her mouth and latched on.

Keep putting her to the breast and with time she will latch on.

I pray o
She tries to latch but gets very angry when she sucks n nothing comes out.

Mothers in the house I have nipple sores and its painful. My mom says it could last for two weeks and that thought is scary. What's the best cure for the sores? I've used coconut oil and I press with hot water and she says my dd's mouth will heal it. But everytime I nurse I see stars and I'm now scared to put my baby to the breast.
My solution might not be conventional but it did work for me. My baby had a bad latch, terrible in-fact. Coupled with my flat and inverted nipplés, you can imagine the outcome. My nips were a mess! Torn, bloody, scabby and breastfeeding was a nightmare. I tried using Medela and even Lansinoh nipplé creme but the moment I pumped or but the bréast in his mouth, the sores would open up again and I will start crying. What I did was to stop putting him to my breast because he latches with such force, and after pumping, I will clean my nipples with metylated spirit and then apply a nipplé stick creme I got to lubricate it. Then I wash off before the next pumping. My nipplés healed in less than 2 weeks and now it doesn't hurt when he latches...He seems to prefer the bottle to the breast for now but I am trying to re-establish direct bréastfeeding.

@zionx Thanks for this reminder. Most times we forget about this heroes who are giving their lives everyday for us to live normally. Without them our homes would have been over-run by terrorists. May God continue to bless you sister for the sacrifices. Accept my condolences.

Mama your method is great but I can't stop breastfeeding my dd cos it took her over a week to latch on. She kept rejecting the breast for days. Now that she sucks the milk production increases daily. I'm scared to stop her so it doesn't reduce again

Our prayers will indeed go a long way. These soldiers are making a lot of sacrifices. Thank God my husband came home on pass three months after I gave birth, that is how he would have died without seeing his son. Because Boko Haram killed him a month after then. It is well. May God let his peace reign in Nigeria and put an end to terrorism in Nigeria.

Amen. Keep staying strong.

What you can do is pump twice as much. Better yet, get an electric pump. If it is out of your budget, perhaps find a mum whom you can partner with and buy one together and share it. People loan electric pumps out in other countries and it really helps. Did you see the latch video I posted a page back?

Fearless07 did you get the pm?

Ozycy grin
The story too plenty and some I'm even reluctant to share online...and we have only been together 1month.
She was sourced by my DH through our former house cleaner baba (they claim they are family friends but they have same surname....so I'm guessing she's his daughter)

1...What's the age range of the nanny......she's 27 (lied to my DH she was 25 but saw her real age when I asked to see her ID)
2..what is the pay range.....Her 2 previous employers were expatriates and she was paid 40k. So that's what we pay her
3..Are they live in or non live in....started off as non live in but she always showed up hours late with excuses so we had to make her live in
3a. If none live in, what is their work time?
3b. If live in, how many days off do they get in a Month?....We are still debating this one. Cos there are modalities involved.I work in a different state than I live, so when I'm at work even if she gets a day off she might not have anywhere to go to as she probably doesn't have family there. And when I'm not at work, twice a month. So she would get to go home 2 weekends in 3months.
4. Is their duty strictly taking care of your LO or do they do housechores too.....When I'm at work, she would only take care of my baby cos my work accommodation has a housekeeper. But at home she would do both.

I should have asked, what are your deal breakers and things you have to manage?

I'm having to manage really low IQ and insubordination.
We have just concluded that her sleep habits (She sleeps like a log...sleeps comfortably standing upright in the kitchen) and lies are a deal breaker...if she doesn't change.
My dh says my expectations are too high for a nanny and I should mange what I have. He says nobody with an average IQ would settle for being a nanny.

Abeg am I being too unrealistic? Is it not possible to get someone with a fairly average IQ that wouldn't turn me to a parrot?

Thanks coldfeet, I'd have to buy her a cream cos she bleaches.

Haba, you've really tried. Low iq is bad enough, but insubordination? Please you need a new Nanny. You're not being unrealistic at all.

I've used coconut oil and I press with hot water and she says my dd's mouth will heal it. But everytime I nurse I see stars and I'm now scared to put my baby to the breast.

I saw this on the net...How to prevent and treat sore nipples
Try these ideas for preventing nipple soreness and solving the problem if it does happen.

1. Let your baby self-latch
Humans, like the newborns of other mammals, have innate breastfeeding abilities and are capable of finding the breast and latching on well with only minimal help from the mother. (Some medications and interventions in labour and birth may make this more difficult for some babies in the first hours and days after birth.) If the mother gets into a comfortable, semi-reclining position and puts the baby tummy-down on her body (gravity will help keep him there, but mom can use her hands to provide some support if needed), with the baby’s head near her breasts, the baby will orient himself by bobbing his head, and move towards the breast to latch on. This can take time, but usually
results in an effective, pain-free latch.

2. Use good positioning if you need to help the baby. Some babies (for example, those who were exposed to medications during labour and birth) may have difficulty in self-attaching. If you are breastfeeding sitting up, be sure your baby is tucked in close to you, tummy to tummy, and that your supporting hand or arm is placed behind her shoulders, not her head, so that she can tip her head back and bring the chin into the breast first. Your nipple should be pointed towards her nose, so that as she opens wide and tips her head back, it will be in the perfect place to slide deeply into her mouth, aimed at the roof of her mouth.

3. Adjust without unlatching
If your baby latches on, and it hurts, you know something is wrong. Sometimes mothers are advised to stick a finger in the baby’s mouth, unlatch him, and start over. The problem with this approach is that it is very frustrating for the baby: every time he starts nursing, he's taken off the breast. Some get so frustrated they refuse to nurse, or begin clamping down on the nipple. It also puts you at the risk of more nipple damage if the baby latches on incorrectly repeatedly. Instead, try first to adjust the baby's position while he’s nursing, so that the rest of the feeding can be more comfortable.

4. Watch for early hunger cues
Mothers with sore nipples often want to space feedings out as long as possible, and that’s definitely understandable! If something causes you pain, you want to do it infrequently. However, a very hungry baby isn’t going to have much patience, and may try to grab at your nipple, causing more pain. Feeding the baby as soon as he seems hungry will make it easier to work on getting a good latch every time.

5. Remember that not all sore nipples are caused by latch problems (although the majority are) Some other possible causes: thrush (a yeast infection on the skin of the nipple, which can also be inside the baby’s mouth); a bacterial infection on the nipple or in the milk ducts; a nipple bleb, which looks like a tiny white blister on the end of the nipple; Raynaud's syndrome, which is a condition where the nipple turns white after a feeding and hurts as the blood flows back in. If you suspect any of these (or some other issue) might be the problem, check with your doctor or a
lactation consultant for treatment recommendations.

6. Check for tongue-tie in baby
A baby with a tongue-tie isn’t able to lift his tongue or move it forward normally and this means she can’t use it to help extract milk from the breast. Instead the baby will push the nipple up with her tongue, pressing it against her hard palate as she sucks and often causing a lot of pain and damage. Look to see if your baby sticks her tongue out past her bottom lip and if she lifts her tongue to the roof of her mouth when crying. If she seems unable to make these movements, consult with your doctor. A medical professional can clip the membrane that restricts the tongue’s movement, which can make a big difference.

7. Use nipple shields cautiously, if at all
Nipple shields are often recommended to protect sore nipples during feedings, but they can sometimes cause more problems than they solve. Nipple shields look like bottle nipples made out of very thin silicone and are placed over the mother’s nipples before the baby latches on. However, often the baby doesn’t latch well onto the shield, the nipple continues to be damaged and the different shape and feel may lead to the baby having difficulty in breastfeeding without it. If other things haven’t worked, though, it may be worth giving it a try with the help of a lactation consultant.

8. Use your milk to heal cracked, bleeding or blistered nipples
Express a little milk onto the nipple and let it air-dry there. Be cautious about using lanolin or other creams; if you do have some thrush present, these creams can encourage it to grow. A prescription ointment (such as Dr. Jack Newman’s All-Purpose Nipple Ointment) with ingredients to fight bacterial and yeast infections can help you heal as well. You can also take over-the-counter painkillers. Another option is to apply an ice pack just before you feed the baby to temporarily numb the nipple as you latch the baby on. One piece of good news:breastfeeding nipples generally heal very quickly once the cause of the damage (such as a latch problem) is resolved.

9. Air those nipples out
If your nipples are sore and damaged, you may find that anything touching them makes them hurt even more. You can use breast shells (donut shaped plastic items with a dome top; you put your nipple in the middle of the donut hole and the dome protects it from contact) to protect them from being touched by your bra. As much as possible, expose the nipples to the air so they will stay dry and heal.

10. Seek out help!
Many people think it’s normal for breastfeeding to be painful, at least in the beginning. It’s not. If these tips haven’t helped you resolve the problem, seek out a breastfeeding expert who can look at your particular situation and give you some suggestions. Often a mother with sore nipples will have more than one problem (for example, you may have started off with a poor latch, developed a bacterial infection, and have Raynaud’s syndrome as well, triggered by the trauma to the nipple) so you may have to work through each one before the feedings become pain-free.

Sugah, it's not a low-IQ thingie, it's a Nigerian worker mentality issue. They know what they are doing, most times. The last 2 my sister had swore they didn't know how to pound yam. Women in their mid-30s and 40s who grew up in the village! The last one had 2 children and was 28, yet she constantly left the kids to play unsupervised and would lie down in another room on her phone. One of the boys ended up losing his front teeth playing dangerously, she didn't bother to inform their mum until that she came home and saw it. And her reply was a very defensive "I have no idea what happened!". Because she didn't want to admit that she had left them for hours to relax in her room, which was a different section of the house. She would never do that to her own kids. Most of these women don't send your kids, in their minds, their own children are not enjoying like yours so why should they be wasting too much energy on yours? We as Nigerians don't have good work ethic, it is rare to see a Nigerian who works like the business belongs to him and feels that he is earning a pay commensurate to what they put in. Nigerians work grudgingly.

Compare these 2 cases: I saw a Filipino nanny with her charge. The boy's mum was checking in, she carried him out of his stroller. He wasn't crying, she just didn't want to leave him there. She absentmindedly smoothed his cheek and kissed his forehead, she was affectionate. His mother didn't see any of this and all of us watching were exclaiming in stunned disbelief. My mum and another man thought maybe the child was the Filipino lady's own. Full Naija kid!

Case 2: Nigerian nanny took her caucasian charge to check her bank alert at GTB. The toddler wandered off, sat on the dusty floor, rubbed her toy all over the floor and put it in her mouth. The nanny didn't even bother to pick her up. Women on the queue started hissing and one asked her "if it was your child, will you let her sit down on the ground?". The nanny got angry and jerked the child up. She didn't bother to remove the dirty toy from that one's mouth.

The help I have doesn't steal, cleans, laughs with my kid and worries in her own way about her. That's all I need, I do all the market runs and cooking. I even let them take midday naps together whilst I cook for both of them.

That is the reason why those countries will keep on progressing. Some Nigerians' mind are full of hatred, jealousy and envy. We must ensure we bring up our own children to be different. We must train them to love others.

New product alert!!!
Baby fruit feeder now available and selling faaasstt.....
Have you always tried getting your LO occuppied while you do some chores or drive? The solution is here. Chop some slices of fruit into the fruit feeder and hand over to baby to feed. The rattle handle that makes sound also distracts baby to play. This is 100%preferable to pacifier that feeds babies with nothing.
It's just 1k
