TheGreat342:
Hello,

I will be applying to University of Calgary and I am interested in M.Sc. Biostatistics which is in the college of medicine, department of Community Health Science. My first degree program is in Mathematics.

I have read the thread and I saw some GCSM note of inconsistency of the course of study.

Let us assume I have being admitted and I want to apply for TRV. How will I convince the VO informing him/her that Biostatistics is a collaborative program between Mathematics and Statistics and the College of medicine.

Pls epp mi
Mathematics and Biostatistics are inconsistent in my opinion and knowledge. The VO was right.

Biostatistics is a specialization in Public Health/ Community health, Epidemiology.. It deals with rates, health statistics, health related data...
Mathematics is totally different. It's a department of its own.

In simple terms, Biostatistics is a health course while mathematics is an abstract science.
You can even see the are not in the same Faculty.
I did some level of Biostatistics during my Baccalaureate program, I know what I'm talking about and I'm in the health/medical profession.

Does University of Calgary offer Biostatistics as a collaborative program of Mathematics and statistics ?? Or you're making your own assertions and assumptions undecided

Congratulations.
Please has anybody been able to track his or her application online?
The tracking system is not working. It keep saying NO RECORD FOUND and I noticed this late October.
If we cannot track our applications, how do we know if our TRVs are approved or not?
Thanks all.

You are wrong bro. This person should be able to prepare a detailed SoP why he wanna do MSc Biostatistics. They prefer to admit a candidate with strong mathematical background. Who tell you say mathematics na abstract science?

University of Saskatchewan said it is a collaborative program between maths and stat. I believe other schools will say that too.

From my prediction, I think the above moniker is a medical student who doesn't know the relationship between applied mathematics or statistics and Biostatistics. Biostatistics includes design of biological experiments, collection, summarisation and analysis of data. Is the above not related to Statistics?

Google, please come to our aid ooo... Lol

Mathematics uses the principles of abstraction and logic, therefore it is an abstract science . https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics

Biostatistics as you already said includes design of biological experiments, collection, summarisation and analysis of data.
A knowledge in Health/Epidemiology is Absolutely required for Biostatistics.
Biostatistics as I said earlier simply deals with HEALTH DATA
Oga I never said Biostatistics is not related to Statistics, in your hastened effort to "correct" me, I guess you didn't read my summation properly.
I only compared Biostatistics and Mathematics which the subject in question did.

The person who asked the question is a Graduate of Mathematics who wants to apply for Biostatistics In University of Calgary not Saskatchewan.

Most schools wouldn't say that Biostatistics is a collaborative program between Mathematics and statistics.
Biostatistics is an Option/specialization in the field of Public Health/Community health/Epidemiology, it is not even a Course of its own in most cases, it is usually under the specialization in Epidemiology/Public Health.

The University of Alberta, University of Manitoba nd many others don't offer Biostatistics on its own, to do Biostatistics you will have to register for a Public Health program, then choose Biostatistics as a specialization.

I did Biostatistics for 3 years during my Baccalaureate program, I also did Mathematics at some point in my life, The are NOT the same thing AT ALL...
I also did Biostatistics during my Masters, Oga I know what I'm talking about.

I think you're the person who needs not just Google but also Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biostatistics

I only offer information to the best of my ability in this thread. I don't argue here. I argue only in Politics section cheesy
So don't expect any other reply from me on this issue.
Peace.

Re: Travelling To Canada Part 11 by Ajibade105(m): 10:14am On Nov 08, 2016
If you have done mathematics before is different from if you did mathematics as a discipline. Saying mathematics is the use of the principle(s) of abstract and logic doesn't make it a abstract science. I don't need to argue too much about mathematics as a discipline because I did my first degree in mathematics so I know what it entails.

I didn't say Biostatistics is not in the department of public health or community health science, etc. I was just trying to tell you that mathematics and Biostatistics are kind of related because you will use all the mathematical and statistical skills you have learnt which makes a person with a degree in mathematics to be able cope in that department. Forget the fact that this department is in health science or public health.

Infact, a very strong background in Real Analysis is needed for this course. For Msc Biostatistics in usask, check this link https://grad.usask.ca/programs/biostatistics.php#Program

To the moniker Great342, please write a detailed SoP telling the VO the relationship between mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and Biostatistics. I believe you have done some courses related to Biostatistics like statistical inference, linear regression, design of experiments etc. Tell the VO about these courses and how you develop interest in this field and you will get your TRV to study this course at graduate level.

**cheers**

Please put a detailed attention to drafting a self explanatory and convincing SoP if you are so determined at taking that course. There would always be a reason why you intend to take a particular program especially when its not exactly in line with your background education.
Pls guys lets try and abstain from challenging people's contributions or opinions..... most of the times they are simply just a guide... plss. People feel offended when you say they are wrong!
My advise; let's try and stay within our area or scope of study whenever we can..... of course there are reasons why i may want to change a career path but it's possible some VOs will just take it as that you are not consistent. And hook you on purpose of study!!.. then you'll be required to speak a lot more English on your sop grin truly... UK may not really challenge career change until when you are requesting visa extention for further studies but can you say the same here!?
My advise again.... just play by the rules!!
Regards.

Go to their website and download the Documents checklist for MRD. Just know that you must include 2 Reference Letters (Academic or Work related), CV, Copy of degree certificate, Statement of Academic interests and Transcript (Official directly from your School). Check their website for detailed info as there could be new requirements. Best wishes.
