The Simplest Way To Calculate The Numbers Of Blocks U Need For Your Fence

The simplest way to calculate the numbers of blocks you need for your fence project, assuming you are fencing a land measuring 120 feet by 60 ft, a standard plot

This calculation is based on 9 inches block fence .
The measurement we are using is 120 ft (length) and since we have two lengths that is multiply by 2 which is 240 ft. (120 x 2) = 240

The breadth is 60 ft and also since we have 2 breadths that equal 120 ft (60 x 2) = 120
Then (240 + 120) that is 360 feet perimeter line fencing.

The calculation

(we are to convert this 360 feet to inches ) since a foot is 12 inches , now let us multiply 12 inches by 360 ft which is 4320 inches.

Now to get the line numbers of blocks that will go around the fence perimeters of 4320 inches or 360 feet, we would need to divide 4320 by 18 inches, since the length of any block be it 6 inches or 9 inches is 18inches.

Now 4320 inches divide by 18 inches is approximately 240 line of blocks , then we must multiply that by the numbers of coaches of blocks you want for your height, assuming 7 ft which is 9 coaches that means 240 multiply by 9 which is 2160 blocks and that is all you need anything aside from this is fake and fraud, this calculation is derive by me professionally and i have been using it without any mistake, but always remember to add 10 % of blocks to it because of broken blocks, and for this work, you only need 30 bags of cements, one bag of cement to 70 blocks, is standard.

for your pillars between the fence, let assume 6 blocks far from the next pillar, that means 6 divide by 240 which is 40 pillars, 1 bag of cement to 2 pillars standard, that is 17 bags plus 40 bags that is 47 bags is need by me to do this fence, if i'm in position and you should also to add 15 bags for floor blinding of the fence making 62 bags of cement.

Then, we need to minus the gate and the pillars that are also taking space in the fence.

The gate is 12 ft, let us assume the gate columns or pillars is 14 inches each, we have 2 pillars holding the gate, that is 28 inches or 2. 4 feet plus 12 feet that is 14.4 feet or approximately 15 feet.

Remember we already calculate the pillars that 40 pillars is need for the measurement.

Each pillar or column for 9 inches concrete is 9 inches square, 9 x 40 = 360 inches that is (30 feet + 15 feet = 45 feet ) / 18 inches = 30 blocks multiply by the number of coaches, 30 x 9 = 270 block minus 2160 blocks = 1890 blocks in total.

40 lengths of 12mm iron rod, since one pillar is equivalent to 1 length.

3 lengths of 16mm iron rod for the 2 big pillars holding the gate.

90 planks of soft wood for the framing.

1 truck of granite (granite would be use for the wall foundation and columns)

5 trucks of sharp sand

Thanks for the opportunity giving me to explain this simple arithmetic.

Regards
Adeniyi

Thank you for the information.

I have three questions though.

1. For the 7ft wall, has the depth of the foundation be factored into this?

2. I read one or two comments suggesting that 1 bag of cement to 70 blocks is too little and that 50 block to a bag is more appropriate.

3. I do not understand how you arrived at 47 bags of cement by adding 40 to 17. Did you mean to type 30 bags added to 17 and if that is the case, i still don't get how you got 17..

Thanks

1. The depth had been factored into it. 2. It is OK, it your choice I know someone who told me I must 1bags to 30blocks is money speak, pocket is not same and land formation varies. 3. It is a topographical error, I have made a point glaring, the error will be corrected, thanks.

I wonder though, must pillars have iron rods? I ask because I've seen pillars made with blocks and they were sturdy. On firm soil.

@HsLBroker find your thread educating. I wonder though, must my pillars have iron rods? I ask because I've seen pillars made with blocks and they were sturdy. On firm soil.

It's not a proper pillar without the rods. You need iron for sturdiness and stability; if not the concrete alone can break into pieces.
See below, only one iron rod was used... they were trying to get-around using more rods.... results is what you see below. Bad.

Sorry but I'm back. Rather than casting pillars,I've seen many cases where the place of pillars is replicated by blocks. Isn't this a credible lower cost means of fencing a plot? The only pillars that are then cast are the 2 gate pillars. What's your view please?

people replace blocks with pillars or Columns because of money, or lower cost means like you rightly said

@ HsLBroker i am looking for somebody that can handle a fencing project for me February next year. The plot is 60 x 120. If this is something you will be interested in, then send me a cost estimate for materials and construction for both rafting, fencing and gate. The 2 pillars for gate must be included and not quoted separately. I want hand Moulded blocks and not from factory that will cost more. Location is ibeju lekki. I had a builder I used at other locations before but recently, he is becoming too greedy and being that I am out of the country most of the time makes things a little bit difficult. Please send me your quote at ice4u999@yahoo.com showing a detailed breakdown and if I like what I see then you are the man for the job. FYI my may goal is building trust for future projects. Thanks

Hi @HsLBroker, Hajj @mufutau55 many thanks for your contribution on this property section and @HsLBroker for sharing this great piece. This is my first time getting a property (land was bought on my behalf as I wasn't on ground) and thinking of fencing the land. Please see attached survey plan for a piece of land in Ibadan.

1.) Can you kindly advise how many plots are in the survey?

2.) I got a quote for fence advising 2500 blocks for 5 coaches for this land. Going by your calculation I have calculated total number of blocks for 9 coaches to be 2332 blocks (gate, pillars removed).

3.) 9 inches or 6 inches block for fence

4.) Also, is it advisable to mould the blocks or buy them ?

Many thanks for your response

Some places in Oyo State uses either 60x120ft or 50x100ft as one plot.... read more below.
1. (a) If you use 60 x 120ft (648sqm) per plot, yours will be 1.70 plots meaning almost 2 plots.
(b) If you use 50 x 100ft (450sqm) per plot, yours will be 2.45 plots meaning almost 2 plots and half.

2. The blocks is about right, extra needed for breakage.

3. 6 inches hollow blocks or solid (based on your pocket) is usually used. I prefer 6 inches hollow blocks.

4. Buying or Moulding blocks depend on you... you can save some money if you mould yourself but you need people to supervise it.

Hope the above helps.

Good write up and calculations, also note the topography of the land also matters, that is whether the land is a level ground,or a slope.
