Guys... I'm sorry... I tend to use that phrase too much these days... but I truly am. Check my heart and you will find it's true... I'm just so busy thinking money thoughts...the graduate I just became. Ehen, something happened this morning. I googled my thread to update because... well, I didn't bookmark and knew it must have gotten down the pecking order... that's by the way... Lo and behold, I saw a site that had my story as one of their News headline. isn't that akin to plagiarism or theft of intellectual property? And I have plans to publish oo... what to do? Nimat158, I see you.. #MadeofMore! 1 Like |

George thought for a while before giving her the answer. He didn’t know how she was going to believe him if he told her he was that same person. “Well, you wouldn’t understand if I tried to explain it but I am that guy and yet, not that guy! “ The puzzled look on her face was a clear indication that she hadn’t bought his gibberish. “What I mean is that. I was cloaked with a spell to prevent people from knowing my true identity. I too just realized it much like you. This identity has never been mine. I was before now a ten year old with the frame of a malnourished child but now I’m the exact image of a guy in his teens, probably seventeen years old.” He blinked as he finished. That hadn’t come from him. Alexius was showing himself helpful in yet another way. The look of horror had disappeared from the girls face but there were faint traces of confusion that lingered as he turned to face her before ducking under the extended branch of a gigantic tree that stood on the way. Ahead of them, someone was obviously enjoying himself as Harris had now gotten himself a short stick which he used in poking Dathan repeatedly. Dathan winched in pain but kept going. George had the strangest intuition that Dathan was going to find a way to get Harris and if he was lucky use him as hostage to get what he wanted. That guy was so naïve and callow too. George found his concentration drawn within and he found himself in the same path. They were about to cross a narrow bridge when Dathan kicked Harris from behind and with a surprising alacrity flipped himself rolling his back backward and came to hold Harris imprisoning him locking hiss arm round his neck. “The scepter now or I snap his throat! “ He said with a shout. George looked at Nora who herself wasn’t sure about the next course of action. George hesitated and Dathan tightened the grip on Harris' throat. He was already choking. “You waste any more time and I will end his pitiful life here and now. And you still would need me to return the scepter. It’s a win-win for me. “ He grinned at what seemed to him like genius idea. He prided in being a very fast thinker and a smart one too. “Okay, but promise you won’t hurt him after I give it to you. “ “What would I gain hurting this low life? I’d gain thousand times more pleasure hurting that one! “ he said pointing to Nora. Now, give it! “ George threw it at him. He released Harris as he made to catch it. “Cognito! “ The scepter having almost landed on his hand did a U-turn and came back to meet George. Angrily, Dathan made to seize Harris again but Nora having caught George’s eye signal had rushed for Harris the moment she had seen the scepter working its way towards Dathan and she was fast footed. His eyes burned crimson as he cast a wicket gaze at George. George felt a hot sensation and rubbed his eyes. “Any problems? “ It was Nora’s voice. He opened his eyes to see Harris still poking at Dathan and grinning wickedly. “No, why? “ “I noticed you slowed down a bit. Sure you ain’t tired? We could take a rest you know. “ “No, thanks, “ George said as he watched the scene ahead of him. They were about to get onto the bridge. The exact spot where Dathan was going to attack Harris. “Hey, Harris! Slow down, will you? “ He stopped in his tracks and looked back. George hurried up to him. “I’ll take over from here. You go be with Nora. “ Without any word, Harris walked back towards Nora. “You won’t get the opportunity to attack him or use him as bait. “ This he said talking to Dathan as he pushed him ahead. He caught the look of heightened amazement and confusion on his face. Back with Nora, Harris asked. “Your don’t think he dislikes me, do you? “ he asked Nora. “No, I don’t .Why do you ask? “ He just cut short my excitement. That was like the best moment of my life yet and he just made it short lived. “ “On the contrary, I think it’s me he dislikes. I think I must have pissed him off or something. “ They both became quiet each locked up in their own thoughts wondering where they had gotten on the wrong side of their new hero, their new leader. They came close to a cave that had a low entrance ,a crevice and they had to bend to enter in. Dathan beckoned on George to go in first but he was pushed forward by George using the scepter. A red spark had become visible and before he could drag Dathan backward, he was whisked away into the cave, he screaming with horror. |

“My God! What just happened? “ It was Harris who spoke up first. He was visibly shaken. Nora got to where he was and they both tried looking into the cracks to see if they could get any trace of him. “Step aside” They quickly heeded his voice as he pushed his hand forward and spelled. “Spactio!” His splitting spell didn’t work. He tried other spells. “Sangor!” Still nothing. He tried couple of other spells he could recall but they all proved futile. “We have to save him. We have to…. Something terrible might happen to him. “ “I think this is meant to be his punishment for desecrating the tomb of Thorank. Words have it that there are spirits at large guarding this place… that’s was the more reason we were surprised when we got to hear that he single handedly worked out how to get in and steal the scepter. Only a true heir of Thorank can do that. “ George remembered how Alexius had brought news that he was heir to the throne of Thorank. If the heir of Thorank can get into his tomb, now was the time to find out if he truly was the heir. “By what means would the son, the heir of Thorank be identified? “ “Well, many signs exist but I think one of the most profound is that the language of the EARLY would come easy to him.” “Hmmm…. .” He didn’t possess that ability and so he ruled off every possibility of he being the heir. Alexius had lied to him. He wished Alexius would start talking immediately but for some reason he was quiet and wouldn’t talk so much for being a guardian. He placed his hand on the wall of the cave and tried to see if he could push open the cracks. Though the cracks had enough space for his hand to go in and pull apart, he found widening the crack really difficult. He soon found himself panting heavily and breathing out his frustration as he tried to catch his breath having exerted so much energy. It was at this point that he saw the markings on the cave. “Come see! “ he beckoned on them. Nora was the first to get there. She looked down at the writings and felt them. It was a mixture of some drawings and letter. “It’s Zercian! The language of the EARLYS. I don’t think anyone has ever been able to decipher what they mean. It’s the same with other tombs. I believe it may be the pass to gain entrance. “ “This one was hidden behind the thick layer of dust that must have accumulated over the years. Makes me wonder how Dathan got in because I only just saw them when I breathed on them removing the dust. If he hadn’t read the writings.” “Dathan is naughty but full of tricks. The guy has a working brain but it only comes up with mischief. “ George looked intently at the writings tracing the beginning till the end. Nothing just made any sense, the snake tail and scorpion head, the cock with human feet, the goat with antlers of a deer. “ “Ascrambledum! “ Nothing. “Codify!” Nothing “Accio! “ Nothing. “I’m sorry but there’s nothing we can do. He’s gone! “ It was Harris who spoke. His voice was low pitched and full of emotions. It was surprising to get that from him seeing Dathan had often made him the object of much ridicule. “Dathan was a menace quite alright but there were times when he was nice. He was once the closest thing we had to a best friend. ..that was before he discovered his lineage and blood relationship with the thoranks.” “Yeah. There were times when I wished him very well. He once saved me from the hands of the Bacters, those crazy emotion seekers. Dathan isn’t all bad! “ Nora also had a soft spot for him. This was quite a revelation and then he seemed to have been aware about the whereabouts of his friends, Cordelia and her dad, Mr. Logan. He sunk down and fed his ears with stories that they both recounted about Dathan and he wondered if it was the very same Dathan he had come to know. There was so much emotion flowing and he too was beginning to feel for Dathan. He closed his eyes and allowed the wind to take his mind away. It did work and brought images of a smiling Cordelia’s face as she listened to her dad tell stories about the Golden old days. He saw Mr. Logan looking so cheerful as he recounted with precision the events of the reign of the Tigerins . The images lingered for a while before they became distorted and replaced with images of men riding on the backs of cocks. The armies of Scorpion prince being flanked by the snake army and the timely appearance of the oracle of peace and war, the antler headed goat. All these memories flashes before him but they were memories he couldn’t pride himself as owning. They were being channeled towards him. He sprang up suddenly and walked towards the cave, he rang his hand along the writing and as he did, he felt the strongest of urges to whistle…. His lips concocted to the whistling shape and he found himself whistling a soft melancholic tune. He knew the meaning but couldn’t quite explain it. Nora and Harris had gotten up and were looking at him with astonishment. His eyes had whitened and the pupils were all but gone. It was like he was a visible ghost. They also noticed that the cave had started opening and the red light had started becoming more visible. They both held hands, Nora and Harris more out of uncertainty than of fear. Then George stopped and his eyes returned to normal. “Let’s get in.” He beckoned on them cutting off Nora who already had series of questions to ask. |

Chapter 16 The air smelt of ash and decay. George found occasional wriggling of his nose the best remedy. He led them through a corridor as they searched for Dathan. Lying on the floor were pebbles differing in size and colour. This made walking quietly an arduous task and they risked being caught. He wondered if the so-called guards hadn’t already noticed their presence. He imagined them watching from a corner like a cat feeding on the futile attempt of the mice’s effort to evade his irresistible capture. A cold wind was brewing and George found himself crossing his arms over his chest to protect what little warmth he had left. Again Nora was at the flank refusing any other position and George was left wondering if she felt safe now or was probably just trying very hard to conceal her fears, which she was doing well at if that was the truth. He was beginning to feel some himself. Whatever took Dathan certainly wasn’t trying to play a game of hide and seek. The lines of pebbles were getting scanty and they knew that the path was coming to an end. It was at this point that George felt a hand tug him. He rattled to a halt only to discover it was Harris. “I’m scared!” The look on his face was pure fright and George wondered if he had done well bringing him along. He could have been outside waiting for them so he could ring an alarm should they not return or in the worse case scenario, tell of their demise, how that they towed the path of bravery in embarking on an herculean task in trying to rescue one who wasn’t even a friend, at least not at the moment. But truth be told, Harry didn’t stand a better chance outside much less inside for who was certain that the forces that took Dathan weren’t still outside. At the moment they were nothing but pons in the hand of a master strategist. The path ended in a junction that led to two routes and they had to make a choice which they were going to take. “Oh, kill me already,” Harris was as fretful as ever. “We could as well go back and come some other time well prepared. Huh? “ He got his answer from the silence that ensued. He hanged down with his hands on his knees. “Let’s go this way! “ Nora said pointing to their right. It was a tunnel, some degrees darker than the one they were in. “I say we take this!” George said pointing to the other way. There was light probably coming from the cracks on the cave. “No, don’t be deceived by the safer look experience has told me that will only lead to more danger. “ said Nora with an air of maturity. “I disagree, there probably won’t be any luck there, I think that place hasn’t even been treaded at all. “ “The more reason why you should consider it. “ “The better reason we shouldn’t “ “Can’t you be reasonable!” This time her voice had taken a raise throwing caution away and George couldn’t resist retorting “it’s you being unreasonable here. The obvious route to take is this but you’re too blind to see it. “ “What are you driving at? Nora said squaring up to him with an angry look on her face. George had the urge to reply her but he kept quiet breaking loose from her burning gaze. “Let’s ask…. .” They both turned to see that Harris was gone. |
