It could paint a fake picture to you like Onazi and Khedira play the same way. Think about that.
I didn't match their stats to come to my conclusion.
Having watched Sami khedira, I always see an Onazi in Arabian body. They both aren't so excellent with the ball at feet, they both love attacking space, incredible energy etc...
I don't think you followed my conversation with Michael2..
Here's my original post that brought up the khedira and Onazi comparism

Your points are well noted.
But you have to factor in that Rohrs favoured formation is 4-2-3-1 formation. Which is the German national team's formation. Its not strange for Rohr who has worked within the DFB setup for a while to employ this formation.

Coming to the midfield analysis in this formation, it requires a double pivot of a play maker and a runner.
Germany played with Schweinsteiger as the deeplying playmaker while Sammy Khediera is the runner....
Shweinsteiger is required to recycle the ball and hit long passes to the wingers and forward runners to setup a lightning quick counter. While Khediera presses high up the field and distrups the opposition from getting to mark out Shweinsteiger, just like Gattuso used to do for Pirlo and later Vidal at Juve.
The Germans really on Khediera's incredible big engine to drive them from midfield. Midnight you, Kross can do same job Shweinsteiger used to do.

Coming to Nigeria, Onazi could just be our Khediera while Mikel our Shweinsteiger. With either Iwobi or Etebo playing the Ozil role.
In this role, onazi doesn't really require to be a pass master since he has a Mikel playing beside him. His job will be to take away markers from Mikel, while Obi sets attacks from deep... Just like Onazi, Khediera is not a pass master but he uses his energy to steam role teams.

Alot of teams who play 4-2-3-1 formation most times have a player who is limited in passing range in a double Pivot.
Just like Arsenal plays with Carzola the deep lying playmaker and Couqline the energetic but limited passer.

Let's not throw Onazi away yet. He could add alot to the team in a dual pivot role.

Watch this little clip of Onazi... You can see the way he went past 3 players to score in 2.0mins...
You can also watch his clips against Italy at Fulham. He basically suffocated the Azurris in midfield. He's our energizer in midfield.

But he is not intelligent in his passes. The Germans play a holistic passing game. And, Khedira makes intelligent choices. Khedira soaks pressure. There is a big contrast in styles. I do not know we can correlate them.
Unless you mean like a water carrier. However, just as someone pointed out Leon Balogun referred to our play as Tiki Taka. I do not see Onazi fitting the bill. However, I have seen Khedira on numerous occasions exhibit those abilities.

I have never felt that passing brilliant choice during Onazi's play. Just like Esiti, I was impressed with his choices. I felt on a better pitch, his effect would be stronger. When I watch Raheem Lawal, I am blown away with his choices and ability.

This is something I enjoy and I look forward to when watching games. Just like when City played Gladbach, Dahoud blew me away with the way he spreads passes.

You can liken them to energetic runs but when watching them, they are two different players.

Just like Fernandinho, he is clearly a driving force of the City team. He covers lots of distance, tackles, intercepts. However, his split second decisions in ripping passes sets him apart from lots of midfielders.

Will we say Fernandinho is like Onazi because of his running? They are two different players.

Your love for stats and analysis gives a good picture. No doubt about that. It gives a different dimension to the debate. I just do not want you hinging to it like a grail because sometimes it does not paint the true picture.

Either way, I will watch Onazi closely. Maybe I missed an aspect of his passing because of the intensity he plays with.

We are still getting to understand Rohr. His next choice of players will give us a clearer understanding of his set up.

Good night and enjoy the E-Beer. Courtesy of Yara Yara.

That is what I tried to explain. If we go holistic with the Tiki Taka pattern, even the defenders should have good passing abilities. That is why you can see a player like Mascherano and Kolarov converted to defenders.

If Onazi can pull off the passing, he can fit into the team. However, if Rohr wants the team to play with more coherency, and Onazi can not pull it off, then he has to look for a better player.

Just like City. Over the next year, Guardiola will ship out players and bring in players that suit his philosophy. That does not mean we are not playing to his philosophy. We can get better at it with players that fit in better.

I think I have to clear this up. Am a numbers man, I don't hide that but I don't hang on to stat for the fun of it or as some form of Holy grail.
I post stats and numbers because that's the global standard these days.
Teams like Germany at the last world cup invested alot scouting softwares they used to checkout their opponents.

Arsenal scouting software called StatDna was bought for millions of pounds. This scouting software was responsible for unearthing Elneny, Mustafi, Perez and Xhaka.
I was overjoyed when the Nff under Maigari purchased a scouting software which had the data bank of every Nigerian player in Europe, I don't know what have become of that recently.

I know stats and numbers don't tell everything about a player because most times Agents and manager ask players to play for numbers.
This makes some players not to bt daring because they r too mindful of their numbers.

No beef. As long as you do not hang on every bit of it, it is a good aspect of analysis. If your strong at it, it gives a different insight. At the end, it is best to stay you. If you are a numbers man, stick to a numbers man.

If not your views, I would not think of watching Onazi closely to see other dimensions of his game.

Playing ticki tacka appears quite appealing. I love football with lots of passing and movement.
But you must understand in national team football especially African football, you need athletes not just artists all over the pitch.
South Africa play this lovely passing game but in Africa they get found out because they lack the athletes.

We can't just go with a team of 11 tippy tappy players in Yaounde or Dakar... The pitches won't eve allow you move the ball around quickly.
There should be a little bit of variation to our ticki tacka. Where there is room for an energizer with four longs, who snapps at opposition and run relentlessly over 90mins.
This is Africa, we must employ a pattern that suits us.

That is why I used the term, Holistic. If Rohr is a coach who likes a holistic approach, then the team will shift towards that kind of play. If Rohr mixes his game, then there will be difference.

This depends on the Rohr's philosophy. My suggestion is with the idea of Rohr preferring an team of efficient passing players.

LOL... You do realise that Rohr is a numbers man?
Against Zambia, his reason for playing Ndidi was because he feared the Zambian threat from set pieces.

I did a quick check and I discovered that Ndidi won the most ariel balls out of our Defenders and Midfielders, according to his stats.
Rohr wouldn't have known this piece of information from just watching him in training if he hadn't studied his numbers.

This decision alone shows me that Rohr is a realist not an idealist.

A realist conforms to the opposition and adjusts to the reality on ground like a Mourinho and Anceloti while an Idealist does not change his pattern no matter the opposition eg Wenger, Guardiola Roland Koeman..
Rohr being a realist will not attempt to convert the super Eagles to Barcelona without considering the opposition and the environment he's working at.

Nigeria vs. Algeria: Mikel, Rohr assure victory

Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr and Captain
Mikel Obi on Tuesday assured Nigerians that the
team will beat Algeria in the World Cup qualifying match on Saturday to maintain their streak in the World Cup qualifier.

They gave the assurance when the Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo visited the Eagles in training at the National Stadium Abuja.

Mikel thanked the vice president for making out
time to visit the club, adding that it would spur
the team to great victory.

Mikel said the team knew the task ahead on
Saturday as it would be a difficult encounter but
added that “we are focused, we have played and won the first game but it is still not done yet.

He said, “This game is going to be a very difficult game as Algeria is a very good side; so, we know exactly what is ahead of us.

“That is why we are here, everyone is in camp
early and being together is very good.

“We want to keep this because this is a very
young team, we want to grow together and want to make sure we go to the World Cup.”

The Super Eagles captain said that with the help of the President and Vice President, the team would do the nation proud.

He said, “We want to say thank you so much for all you have been doing for us and we pray that you continue to do more for us because we
actually do need it.”

Coach Rohr assured that he intended “to bring
the German fighting spirit, playing well, and good organisation to the team.

Rohr said he had confidence in the young team, adding that his mission was to find young players for the future.

He said, “This will not stop only after the World
Cup, we will continue; in this young team, we
have possibilities to stay in the high level for a lot of years.”

According to the coach, the federation and the
sports ministry were very cooperative with the
team and had accorded him support in his task.

He said, “We are good to go and we have some
young and experienced players and we have
some tricks to defeat Algeria.

“It is a great match and we are ready, we know
the public is with us and we have a lot of
confidence to win the game.”

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development,
Solomon Dalung, assured the presidency that the Eagles would not disappoint Nigerians.

He, however, pleaded for more funds to enable
the Nigeria Football Federation, to succeed in the qualifying series.

He said, “As it is the tradition, the team always
train close to the environment of play and this
evening our players have started a campaign with a lot of focus; they are committed and patriotic about this World Cup campaign.

“They are determined to pick a ticket for Nigeria for the World Cup just the way we demonstrated in our first outing in Ndola against Zambia.

“That was our first time of beating them at home and that is a good signal for us in this campaign; the team are organised in spite of the challenges and we are committed to deliver the ticket to Nigeria.

“We will appeal to you that sport is an expensive project; that is why we are always in front of your office.

“This project is about money; we need more
because we have more matches to play. We need to maintain good welfare to enable them put in their best.”

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, assured the Vice
President that the Eagles were capable of
defeating the Algerians in Uyo.

He expressed the hope that the Algerian team
would fall like their Zambian counterparts but
noted that adequate funding was key to the
team’s success.

The Vice President also used the visit to talk with the female national team and pledged the
support of the Buhari administration toward
realisation of their aspirations.

We’ll nullify Algeria counterattacks – Mikel

Mikel at 2010 Afcon

The Super Eagles do not fear Algeria’s
counterattacks often spearheaded by Leicester
City’s attacking duo Islam Slimani and Riyad
Mahrez, says Nigeria captain Mikel Obi.

Algeria coach Georges Leekens is looking to pick
up maximum points against Nigeria in their
Russia 2018 World Cup Group B qualifier in Uyo
on Saturday by hitting the Eagles on the
counterattack with quick and direct forward
passes.

Leekens, 67, who faces selection dilemma ahead
of the visit to Nigeria following injury crisis, has
reportedly settled for a 4-2-3-1 for the Uyo
encounter.

The Desert Foxes will play two midfielders in front
of their back four, with one of them (midfielders)
breaking up any Nigerian attacks through Kelechi
Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi, while the other sends
quick passes to Mahrez and Slimani.

But Mikel insisted on Tuesday the Eagles were
ready for the encounter, saying the opponents’
counterattacking tactics would be nullified by the
three-time African champions.

“We are ready for them, despite having young
players,” the 29-year-old, who has been out of
favour at Chelsea since the beginning of the
season, told reporters after training with his
teammates in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Even though we have some of experienced
players, the team is very young and energetic.
So, the counterattacking play of the Algerians will
not be a problem for us. We can recover, we can
attack. We’ve got the legs to do that.

“They will play to their own strengths, while we
also play to our own strengths and I think it is
going to be a very tactical game.

“We have to be careful. We want to win but a
draw wouldn’t be a bad result.”

The South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations
winner, who represented Nigeria at the 2014
World Cup in Brazil, warned his colleagues against
complacency in the clash.

He said the Eagles would not find it easy against
the Desert Foxes, who were held to a 1-1 draw at
home by Cameroon in their first World Cup
qualifier on October 9, the day Nigeria beat
Zambia 2-1 in Ndola.

Mikel said, “We must continue to do exactly what
we are doing. We’ve been doing things right, we
have been playing well and look solid as a team.

“Defensively, we look good, going forward we look
good, we create chances and we score goals.

“So, we have to continue to do exactly what we
are doing, maintain focus, discipline in camp and
ensure we work very hard.”

Meanwhile, Germany-based defender Leon
Balogun was injured in training on Tuesday.
Sources said Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr is
concerned about the development.

The 23 players invited for the encounter trained
on Tuesday.

@golfish80, I tink u just hit d nail on d head with ur analysis as far as African football is concerned we can't do away with players like onazi in our set up, we cannot HV just flair and guile alone we need steel too. imagine we HV a match in far away Kenya or any other places in Africa where d terrain is not favourable with d bad pitch and weather conditions. hw are we going to play d beautiful passes some of us are talking abt. we witnessed d match in Ndola where our boys managed to play on d bad pitch after 45 minutes d likes of iwobi, ihenacho got tired. it was players with steel like onazi DAT kept us alive in DAT match, with his endless running and strength, even wen esiti came in he brought d same power and steel into d midfield DAT helped us curtail d attacking forays of d Zambians.

Good night

If you go back, I did a Shor review on this thread about our games in Zambia and I pointed out that, Although Ndidi had a tough time in the right, his aerial presence helped the team. I do not need to look at stats to know that. I pointed out he drifted into the 18 to help in defence.

As I said, Puff Puff and Chin Chin.

I noticed it during the game. You noticed it after by browsing.

You read data, I watch.

You guys are wrapped with just the African scene. We are building for the World Cup. By the time we get there, we should be a top playing side. So it is not only about playing Kenya.

Reports from camp say Alampasu is outshining other keepers in the evening training:

Training report from @kayodesuberu:

Kelechi and Iwobi touches this evening training oozes confidence and hope for Nigeria football future. Pure class

Beautiful Lob goal from Kelechi now. When u talk Abt Mahrez & Slimane, you talk Abt Kelechi & Iwobi. Algeria ll surely fall.

Alampasu looks so sharp and fit. No stage fright for this young lady.

Alampasu has clearly drowned akpeyi at this evening training. Fit, agile, aware and very talented.

Mikel look fit and sharp. You can never buy his years of experience. Needed greatly in this Team. Clear leader.

Moses recent form is rubbing off on his confidence. Sharp, smart and hugely talented. Algeria will surely fall

John Ogu looks very fit, couple with huge physical presence.

The politician and business in the form of @Thenff are here. Training ended. Team looking sharp, fit and full of confidence.
TheGoodJoe why the unnecessary smile

There you go again, missing my point.
Nigeria needed to keep things tight at the back and, Rohr noticed Ndidi marks better and doesn’t give out fouls around the edge of the box than most defenders in the team.
Aside that his aerial abilities in defending set piece in training won Rohr over, as the manager drilled his defenders on how to defend set piece from which they expect Zambia to threaten prior to the game

The quoted was reported after the game..
Ndidi dominated aerial balls in training.
I checked on his stats and noticed that he had won 4.4 ariel balls this season while the closest Nigerian defender won average of 3+...

Interestingly, Zambians never threatened from set pieces. And Omeruo though he struggled but he still dominated Mbesuma and won almost all the aerial battles he went for.
Ndidi was stuck on the right, he didn't have to do any job aerially, he was too occupied with Kalaba.
I can't even remember the Zambians playing any corner kick

Yet you say am the one who don't read games? You that watched the game saw Ndidi at right back winning aerial balls? .. You can lie sha.. Haha

Funny enough Barcelona and Arsenal who are the masters of ticki taka have started applying variations to ticki taka with a blend of steel and style.
Barca got Rakitic and Gomez recently while Arsenal bought Xhaka to add steel to their middle.
Bayern who under Pep Guardiola sold all their players with grit and steel like Vidal and Toni Kroos and replaced them with Thiago Alcantara and Xabi Alonso have struggled in Europe.
Between those times Bayern flopped in Europe, Athletico and Real Madrid with proper battle hardened midfielders like Casemiro, Modric, Kroos, Gabi, Koke, Thiago have played the finals twice.

Teams have evolved into adding steel to their squads while some want the Super Eagles to play tippy tappy nonsense like South Africa with no grit and steel in. The middle.

@goldfish80 Ndidi was actually winning aerial duels for Nigeria. He helped our centre backs in that encounter

How could he had dominated aerial balls playing as a right full back..?
I didn't see the Zambians launch aerial balls to Kalaba.
Rather they lobbed the balls to Colins Mbesuma who Omeruo marked all game.

.
The two teams that played the finals of the previous world cup didn't play ticki taka. Germany and Argentina had proper midfielders with strength and steel.
The last Euros the finalists Portugal and France had players with incredible energy and steel in the middle.
Why do you think we will win the World Cup playing ticki taka?

D super eagles really HV to bring in their A game if dey really want to win on Saturday, d Algerian team will not only depend on counter attacks to get their goals, our defence needs to be top notch on matchday, I decided to watch some of d highlights of d Algerian team enroute their qualification to Afcon 2017 and was amazed at d way dis guys blow away their opponents. dey re very deadly with d freekicks, and corners. in a match against Lesotho dey scored two free kicks with two different players. I know Nigeria is not Lesotho but we really need to avoid committing fouls DAT would lead to free kicks at d edge of our box or close to d goals. coach Rohr reality has a lot of work to do and let's not get carried away by d fact DAT they drew at home to Cameroun cos we re going to face a very solid team. wish d super eagles d best of luck.
