Here are the basic things to do to get your website rank higher on search engines:

1 . content
In order to get your website rank higher on search engines, having quality and original contents is very important. Search engines rank website with original contents higher than those with copied contents from another website.

2.Meta Data
How does search engines see your website pages? Meta data is a way of describing your web pages along with your page title to the search engines, this is what displays when search is being made on Google or Bing or when your website page is shared on social media. So, it is very important to make your web page an eye catching.

3.Page ĺoad time
Search engines would not like to send its users to a page that takes much time to load. You need to reduce the page load time of your website by cutting down the amount of image file on your website and external libraries. Google insight is a very good tool to use and monitor your page load time.

4 . sitemap
This is another important factor when it comes to website ranking, it’s important to have a sitemap of your website, there are a lot of sitemap generators online you can submit your website url to and a sitemap of your website will bè generated for you.

5. backlinks
Finally, search engines rate your website using backlinks, backlinks are the redirections/reference you get from other websites e.g social media. This tells search engines how important your web page or website is.

Reason Nairaland is bigger than ur site with enough back links and domain authority so Google believe nairaland is more relevant than urs now.. hehehe... I won't teach you about SEO again lemme go on to another thread

Backlinks you are right about this but if you are not careful it will still kill the main purpose whn u need Backlinks it will be preferable to go with high authority domain

Absolutely right.
This is not a guarantee however that your website would automatically be on the front page of Google when a search is made.

Another very important point that you fairly missed out was traffic. Without traffic every of the list above amounts to nothing.
Your site must be getting reasonable amount of daily visits so that Google bot and crawlers can automatically mark it as relevant anytime a related inquiry is made.

I would love to write some other important stuff about SEO maybe at a later date. Its actually a hard stuff for a blogger who doesn't know coding and all. There a lot of tweaks that can make this happen sha.

I think the most important is the Quality of your Main content, supplementary content.

Your Expertise, Authority and Trustworthiness is also a factor of your ranking.

Your About Us page should contain sufficient information of who's responsible for the site and the purpose of the site.

Sufficient contact information on your site is also highly advised. All these directly affects your needs met rating which directly affects your Google search engine rank.

If your page concerns finances and medicals (google calls them Your Money or Your life, YMYL sites), then the standards for evaluation becomes even higher.

Google pays lots of people accross the globe a lot of money to assess and evaluate sites based on these variables

1. be very very very patient
2. take a free course on inbound marketing @ hubspot - it teaches u all there is to know about seo, content, email and of course social media marketing.
