Yes, lots of meat but you can see the difference in the quality through the way they stand, walk, their body shape (low to the ground cos of fat and weight compared to bore density), their skin (giants with feathers missing already at 6 weeks) and the cleanliness of the birds.


Are the organic ones going to be more expensive or people will want to pay less because they are smaller; if so, that is a pity!

Seems, ginger +garlic is an automatic answer to CRD.. I spent #3800 on tylodox for this crd for 5days without result but I got an automatic answer after spending #70 on ginger and garlic... Organic thanks for this thread..
But it seems like, the mixture also reduces birds weight drastically, My observation though.
How do you process the ginger garlic?

If you followed the thread carefully, this approach is not pure organic but its a bold effort to achieve this. I didnt do free range which is the tenet of organic poultry production.. I used commercial feeds which is conventional.. I dont want to change many things at once so that I can capture areas to improve on organically. For me, weight wasnt the success story here... Doing away with vaccines, drugs and vitamins was the key things for me. weight was a plus

Good. Have u consider d breed/specie of the fowl ? It could be the reason for not having feathers n growing low to the ground. U should consider rearing different breed-broiler, layer , noiler b Cockrell organically

Sliced the garlic and ginger put inside a container with a litter of water and left over night..
Added 8ml to 4litters of water and served them, is there a better way...

You are right about me not following the thread carefully... I thought the original OP is jfkenny. I was comparing jkkenny's birds to yours (organicfoods).

* Still good job for trying some sort of organic and not having to give them all those supplements and drugs and so on... I was not expecting full free range but at least more room for the birds but this is a start and your birds are broilers to start with.

As a poultry farmer, one should be thanking God when your birds produces lesser feather and more meat, these are a sign of good breeds,
for commercial purposes those feather after plucking out ends up reducing your total weight which on the other hand would have been an advantage on your side,
as for the taste and toughness of the meat, I want to believe this would be better than the conventional method that we are used to, this is organic.
lesser fat,more meat, so what you have there is not fat but meat. heavy meat.
As regard the height of the bird, from my observations Zartec birds are always the shorter type with a large gizzards, and what matter most is the weight.(kg)
We once had a challenge in our farm, the birds were growing more of feather than the usual meat, and we discovered that d guys working in our mills were the ones doing the dirty job, rather than mixing the feeds in the right proportion, they were instead filling the bags with Maize offal without the correct proportion of the concentrate. In essence, they were basically feeding those birds with chaff.

i don think you know this business. in the standard market( were the real money is) weight is all that matters. this is the standard build for amo and chi. i don even like birds with feathers. they over heat easily and due to stress grow slowly.

I can understand the comments about wanting heavy chickens and that weight matters with Broilers. However, I am not in Nigeria and even if I were in Nigeria, I will prefer a healthier chicken with less fat content and ones that had been reared in a freer environment.

I might not know the market but I have reared Broilers before - in my teens, and family has had large numbers of layers; also dabbled in Turkey, Geese and Rabbits.

If I were selling birds that have been slaughtered and frozen* then their looks might not matter. But what I am seeing is that the birds are losing feathers - that must be some sort of condition that is affecting them; broilers do tend to suffer from all sorts and that is why they are given all them drugs and supplements. Taking birds that are almost bald** with blotches to the normal market for live birds will definitely encourage some people to want to pay less or wonder what sort of conditions they have been raised - but, this is Nigeria, it is different.

This is a personal preference! Not taking anything away from the good work these folks are doing - not at all; and I wish them well!

* We raised Broilers in the days when Electricity was almost constant in Ibadan and we had people coming to buy frozen chicken with or without gizzard, I became very good at slaughtering... For those that know where Moor Plantation is then you might know my link with Animal Husbandry.

** Exposed skin of the birds might be signs of disease or something and it further encourages parasites - the feathers are there for a purpose not just for show as in the Cockerel...

My broilers are eating well but no longer weighs as they used to. Their feathers are falling off as well, is it moulting? They are 8 weeks +, is their anything I can do or just keep feeding them and hoping for the best. Some have brown poos as well is their any organic means to arrest the situation am tired of drugs and gradually falling for organic..

I ve sold off 23 @1300....so feeds them lesser.. Maybe I ve not been giving them enough water.. I started using bigger drinker now and discovered that their water ws barely enough for them..

I am now beginning to think that raising Broilers organically is not exactly compatible... I think the breeds of Broilers that you have bought is so important to their development and weight gain and Broilers are not really natural birds so to speak. The added complication of trying to be organic might be counter-productive.

I think the organic way including giving the chicken more room is best suited to Noilers but then you know that noilers take longer to get the desirable market weight of Broilers and they might not even get to the top weight even with constant feeding.

The thing with Broilers is to give them less space, feed them lots including artificially like giving them 16-20 hours light and then pump them with drugs to counteract the effect of cooping them up. With the right breed, right clean environment, good feed and general care they should be ready in 10-14 weeks and you sell them off and sanitise the whole place.

jkenny, I think your birds look fine on the surface of things - it looks like they have a lot of room to move compared to 'organicfoods'. With that in mind, your feed might probably be wasted (scattered) rather than being totally consumed. I don't know about the Brown poo but you should be able to see whether they are healthy or not by their lively attitude, brightness and wanting to feed. I probably will not worry too much about the poo - especially since you are giving them drugs/supplement - they do react to them as well.

Moulting is natural and I do not see severe moulting in your pictures - the feathers will likely grow back. However, moulting can also be a problem but with the age and size of your birds, it will not matter too much as they will all be sold soon. But, I will worry if they start going bald with blotches (that will encourage parasite if they are not there already) or if they are removing their own feathers (lack of protein or nutrient). Water intake is also a factor to take into consideration - no excuse not to give them enough water.

If you want them to gain weight, restrict their movement and feed them late into the night... Spend time to observe them closely!

Are you based in Ibadan? Do you use Lacto bacillus as well? My broilers are on ginger garlic every day and no issue with weight.

Am not in ibadan, anambra. So ginger garlic ain't the problem.. I should simply feed them well... I don't use Lacto bacillus, how is it used

Thanks for ur concern, their feed ain't wasted, maybe water is the culprit, because their water normally get exhausted before 3hrs of feeding them. Being that am not always around during week days, i just discovered and corrected it this weekend, let me watch their weight gain..my breed is obj all male lines, am planning to keep them till december.. Will they ever grow bigger.

Is keeping 37 broilers in a room of 12ft by 12ft that big.

Please bros, I am all for going organic - I salute people that are trying; yourself and organicfoods.

To be honest, I like your birds and I do not see much to worry about: they look really healthy to me and the fact that you have managed to sell some to market people before maturity should tell you that you are doing something right. I think being new in the business is what is giving you anxiety - you are successful already!

It could just be the breed of chicken; some mature and gain ultimate weight a little bit later than others - sometimes the amount of feed will not be that significant because they get to that weight when they are due, not by force.

* But can you understand that Noilers will be better if you want to go organic (less drugs and more movement)? Noilers are hardy (hardier) breeds to start with so they will need less drugs/supplements.

You people need to understand that Noilers aren't as hardy as you think. During the first 8weeks of their lives, they're highly susceptible to cocci. I mean HIGHLY!!. Once they go past that stage, they'd be fine..

I bought the last bag Thursday night, and they just finished it this morning. That is almost like 3 days. I guess it is three days per bag now.
