Abuja, the fastest growing capital city in Africa, one of the fastest growing, most expensive and beautiful cities in the world have so many popular structures that draw the attention of residents. These structures are not just there for sight-seeing; but are iconic, well known, and accessible by average citizens or residents of Abuja. I bring to you the 10 Most Popular Structures in Abuja.

As earlier promised, this article is part 2 in the series of 10 Most Popular Structures I will be writing on in the next couple of weeks. As stated in the first part which talks about the 10 Most Popular Structures in Lagos and the year they were constructed, the criteria used in selecting these structures still stand. However, based on advice from readers, I will like to stick to cities, instead of the whole state. And as you know, the most popular structures are mostly in the cities. Now straight to business!

10. Abuja City Gate

The Abuja City Gate is located on Umaru Musa expressway, the road leads to the Nnamdi Azikwe airport. The gate is arguably the most famous city gate in Africa. Although it was built as a temporal edifice in 1991 signaling the switch of Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja, the popularity of this structure cannot be underestimated. However, its popularity is gradually being reduced as it is currently being removed in parts to pave way for a flyover bridge along the new expressway in construction. It carries the phrase “You are Welcome” and the national flag on its huge concrete structure. This structure is so popular that it is even used by the National Television Authority (NTA) in its News broadcast.

9. National Assembly Complex

The National Assembly complex is one of the most popular structures in Abuja. It is located in the Three Arms Zones in Abuja. It is the official building where senators and honorable members of the House of Representatives meet. Its first phase was constructed in 1999 by ITB Nigeria at a cost of 3.2 billion naira while its second phase which include office wings was constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC in 2007.

8. National Mosque

The National Mosque Abuja was constructed in 1984. It is the most popular mosque within the city. It was constructed by Lodigiani Nigeria LTD during the administration of Ibrahim Babangida. It has a library, conference room, a large and small domes and four minarets. This is where the crème de la crème Muslim population in Abuja worship. It is ranked among Top 60 Most Beautiful Mosques in theWorld by Hongkiat Survey.

7. Abuja National Stadium

The Abuja National Stadium is the home of all Nigerian national teams. It is an all-seater stadium designed to accommodate 60,000 spectators at once. It cost 31 billion naira to construct this mighty structure, making it one of Africa's Most Expensive Stadiums ever built. The structure was constructed by Julius Berger and it took just 3 years to complete. It has played host to numerous local and international sport competitions, musical concerts, religious conferences and so many more.

6. NNPC Towers

Very close to the International Conference Centre, CBN building and the Radio House are the gigantic NNPC towers. These structures are the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC). They house people who manage the oil of Nigeria; you should imagine how popular it is. They are high rising structures and are located on the Central Business District area in Abuja. The towers consist of four high rising structures which form a huge box when viewed from space. Each tower is 246ft high and were constructed in 1996 during Gen Abacha regime.

5. Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport

Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport is the main airport serving Abuja. The airport is about 40km from the heart of the city. It is named after Nigeria’s first president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe. This airport is so popular in the city that it handles over 8 million passengers annually. The first phase of the airport was constructed in the 1980s’ during the regime of Ibrahim Babangida while it was fully completed in 1998 during Gen Sani Abacha regime. It was constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. The cost is unknown.

4. International Conference Centre Abuja

This is another popular and iconic structure in Abuja. It is so popular that hardly is there a lawyer or student of the Nigerian Law School that does not know this conference centre as it play host to the annual call-to-bar ceremony ofthe NLS and also play host to general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association anytime such is held in Abuja. It is a major event centre in Abuja for super-expensive wedding ceremonies, local and international conferences and so on. I have been to this place once and believe me, the structure is magnificent. The structure was built in 1991 by Julius Berger Nigeria during Gen Ibrahim Babangida regime. Cost is unknown.

3. Central Bank of Nigeria Building

This 22 floors (208 ft) high-rising structure grace the skyline of Abuja. The structure is so popular even to non-Abuja residents as its picture is embedded on Nigeria’s naira notes. Construction of the structure started in April 1999 by the administration of Abdulsalam Abubakar and was completed by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo regime on July 31 2003. It was commissioned on October 30, 2003. This wonderful structure was constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria at the cost of 8 billion naira.

2. Federal Secretariat Ministry Buildings

Construction started on the Federal Secretariat Ministry Buildings during the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. Its first phase was completed in 1992 while the second phase was completed in 1996 during General Abacha regime. It is very popular among Abuja residents as it house most federal ministries within Abuja. It was constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. The cost is unknown.

1. Eagles Square

The Eagles Square, Abuja is located in a high brow area within the city. This structure is the most popular ceremonial and official conference ground in Abuja and Nigeria at large as it plays host to official functions, most notably the handing over ceremony of president. It also play host to cultural festivals, Independence Day celebration and many more. It was constructed during the regime of General Abdulsalam Abubakar in 1999. The main motive behind its construction was the need to have a befitting open-air structure where the historic handing over of the military led government to civilian would take place. It is located between the Federal Secretariat Ministry Buildings. Its construction was handled by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. The cost is unknown.
