The 30 metre hole was repaired in 48 hours, although health and safety checks delayed the reopening A section of road in the centre of the Japanese city of Fukuoka has reopened just days after a sinkhole opened up outside a busy railway station and threatened to topple nearby buildings. In a typical demonstration of Japanese workmanship and efficiency, workers toiled around the clocks and had practically filled in the section of road in just two days, according to local media. The road reopened to traffic and pedestrians early on Tuesday after local officials declared the repaired stretch safe. The weeklong rush to reopen the busy stretch of road included repairs to a sewage pipe and replacing traffic lights and utility poles that were swallowed when the sinkhole opened up shortly after 5am local time on 8 November. The incident caused power cuts and disrupted phone signals, and gas and water supplies, but there were no reports of injuries. Local media reports said the 30m by 27m sinkhole, which was 15 metres deep, was caused by construction work on an extension to an underground line. The Fukuoka workers, who filled the hole with 6,200 cubic metres of sand and cement, drew praise on social media. One person tweeted: “I’m surprised the road reopened in a week!” Another said: “Impressive. That was fast.” The astonishing speed of the repair work brought back memories of the efforts to reopen roads that were badly damaged by the March 2011 triple disaster. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/nov/15/japan-fixes-vast-fukuoka-city-sinkhole-repaired-two-days

If it was Nigeria, it would take at least 2 years to fix the road. 1 Like |

One of Nigeria's problem is beaurocracy. The bidding process alone might take one year, then "preliminary and feasibility studies", and all other technical jargons that do no good. 1 Like |

It took one week to repair PROPERLY the road which had damaged power cables, telecommunications lines, electricity cables, water pipes underneath. Meanwhile it took the Akwa Ibom State Government one MONTH to rehabilitate Plaza roundabout in Uyo. However, a Nairalander named Rossikk said it's because of the high GDP that Japan has which made it possible in this thread. https://www.nairaland.com/3445306/how-nation-should-not-what#50744982 What he doesn't know, unfortunately, is that Akwa Ibom State has bar Lagos the highest GDP in Nigeria, but it took her one MONTH to rehabilitate a roundabout . Tomorrow, he'll come and blame the whites. How else can one define incompetence? 1 Like |
