Nice one from the senate. Though there are other institutions offering course in transport as posited by Minister Amaechi, they are not degree awarding. These institutions are Maritime Academy, Oron-Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria. Maritime Academy is essentially a merchant Navy Training programme offering HND while the NITT Kaduna offering courses in Transportation Technology and Management leading to HND. If the Maritime University Okerenkoko is properly structured and positioned it would thrive and offer quality programmes. Presently there is only one of such institution in West Africa; The Regional Maritime University, Teshie-Ghana. The Maritime University can affiliate and collaborate with similar institution in Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore. These are nations with well developed seafaring and ship building culture that rivals that of the western nations. Technically the University can partner with Nigerdock-Lagos and other EPC (Exploration, Production and Construction) companies involved in the Oil and gas Industry. The Nigeria Content Development Bill has helped a lot of indigenous firms to build local capacity in the construction and management of equipment for the oil industry. Finally Amaechi's excuse that the area where the university is safe cannot hold water. There is still the University of Maiduguri in Maiduguri, Ramat Poly, Maiduguri irrespective of the Boko Haram crisis. 5 Likes 1 Share |

The truth is somewhere in the middle... ...I've never heard anyone confirm that the land extends to oilwells and the edge of the sea. That could increase its value. 13 BILLION for land alone needs a very cogent reason. Amaechi should re-value the asset to satisfy himself. The result will be either to invite the EFCC or to request money from Mr. Kachikwu. |

Conflict of decision by the senate because for Maritime institute Oron to start issuing Degree Cert already make it a University equivalent why approving another maritime university when you can simply direct or influence more funding for Maritime Institute Oron. i think this is misplacement of priority. |

[b][size=14pt]The good people of the Niger delta will not forgive Minister Ameachi for condemning the maritime university at Okerenko, Delta state. A strategic project that is been built in his constituency – the niger delta. Amaechi seems to have carried his misunderstanding with the Jonathan too far. He had problems with former first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and with President Goodluck Jonathan, the then Nigerian president. He use that misunderstanding to rub everything link to Jonathan which was not fair. He started a war with the Jonathan and the Wike in Rivers state and turned to Delta state to denied the people of riverine their first maritime university. Ameachi did not reason properly before talking. He was so carried away by the position of a minister forgetting that one day he will be dropped as a minister. If Ameachi knows that he is not just a minister but he is also representing the Niger delta and rivers state he will have think twice. This is a project an Hausa man, Yoruba man and Ibo man will not condemn if it is sited in their own domain. Amaechi went out of his way to utter gabbage condemning all aspect of the project thinking he was pleasing Buhari. Ameachi think he will remain a minister for ever. There was minister before him and there will be minister after him. It is unfortunate that Ameachi has created unnecessary hate for himself especially in the Niger delta region. The handwork of Amaechi will show clearly to him as at the time President Buhari drop him as a minister. He will certainly have no constituency to turn to. That is the sad tale of a man who fail to reason intelligently. Amaechi should have respected the adage that “Silence is golden” I wish to thank President Buhari, the senate, and Minister Kachukwu ( minister of state for petroleum ) for using wisdom to handle this delicate issue. It is in Buhari best interest to see that the Maritime University at Okerenko is completed and the EPZ project completed as well. In same manner, peace will be achieve in the Niger delta region.
