The post independence generation of politicians lobbied hard and got us two UN HQs. One of their major achievements, and i remember being told by my father's friends that Tom Mboya was a big part of that. They knew the power of having those HQs and Paris has been trying very hard ever since to scuttle things.
Whenever a country sends its envoy to Nairobi, he/she doubles up as ambassador to Unep/Habitat meaning they rank very high in their home country. Its nice to have very many senior Ogas from around the world stationed in Nairobi.
