DALUNG’S BOMBSHELL: ‘Nigeria too hungry
to attend World Cup”




The World Cup is not just a football competition. It also represents a bigger avenue for nations to
showcase their football artistry to a global
audience, with players getting to secure new and bumper contracts and endorsements, which in turn, impact positively on the country”s Gross Domestic Product and Foreign Direct Investment.


Football is business and the World Cup fetches
money for all participants. It is top in
entertainment and business. Qualifiers even earn more than $5m from Fifa.


Besides the Olympics, the World Cup is by far the single biggest sports competition in the world, drawing record crowd appearances and creating a never-seen like before football atmospheres for its one-month duration.


The road to the next World Cup in 2018 is on,
with the Super Eagles leading the proverbial
group of death with six maximum points from two matches against Zambia and Algeria.

Cameroon, the only African country with the most appearance at the World Cup make up the group, from which only the first-placed team qualifies for the event.








Having missed out on a place at the next Africa Cup of Nations, starting in January in Gabon, Nigeria desperately needs to play at the World Cup to make up for the lost chance to play at AFCON 2017 but bizarrely, the one who ought to be championing the cause of going to the World Cup is ridiculously the one kicking against it.


Minister of Sport and Youth Development,
Solomon Dalung yesterday stunned all when he
told the Voice of America that he was against
Nigeria’s participation at the World Cup.

His reasons: “That competition stinks of
corruption; that Nigeria is too poor to waste
money on it and that Nigeria would never win the trophy”.

The implication of his statement is also that it is not necessary to waste money qualifying when you cannot win the World Cup.


As shocking as these may be, Dalung, a lawyer by training, said Nigeria should be content with
playing at the Nations Cup, Olympics,
Commonwealth Games. He said that Nigeria could win the Nations Cup but not the World Cup.

World Cup finalists are guaranteed huge sum of
money running into millions.


According to Dalung, “The cup that we can win is the African Cup of Nations. There is nothing again that will take us to another man’s balcony in the name of the World Cup. We already have the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. For these, we can attend such meets. But I am opposed to the World Cup. We don’t agree to it. Conspiracy in the World Cup is too much,” he said, a statement that could upset the world governing body, FIFA.

He was not done.

“There is the issue of bribery and favouritism. There is also the issue of corruption before you are even given the hosting rights. We are here suffering from hunger and we don’t have money for such things. That is why, even if we try many times, once it gets into the politics of the game, we can never win.

“That was why this year, we had to tackle him
(FIFA President, Ginani Infantino) and we said,
‘you , Infantino, if you win this election, you have to give us a position. If not, we shall not agree.’

And you see , by the grace of God, he even
picked an African as his Secretary-General. That
means he has started taking honey and rubbing
on our lips. That means that one day, we shall get to really lick the honey.”


This is ridiculous and unbelievable. But they are
the exact words of Sports Minister Dalung, a man, who has allegedly fanned the embers of discord, disunity and crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation.


It is recalled that Dalung was the unseen hand in the crisis of leadership, that rocked the NFF after Chris Giwa threatened to seize power from the Amaju Pinnick-led Executive Board.


Despite CAS and FIFA’s unambiguous backing of Pinnick’s board, Dalung called for a meeting
between Pinnick and Giwa in his Abuja office,
which snowballed into an all-out fight between
both gladiators. As if that was not enough, the
Minister has continuously asked the Amaju led
board to co-opt Chris Giwa and his members into their board, ignoring the fact that membership of the board is through election. It has been from one dispute to another and Nigerian football has been in court.



Truly, football disputes are out of the jurisdiction of the ordinary law court as the Courts of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland sits over all disputes in sports.


The minister’s latest comments confirm him as a total stranger to sports who has bluntly refused to learn the ropes.

Who knows Jonathan Ligali well enough? Seems like a Nigerian but he's french-born with parents from Benin-Republic (and we know Benin has a good representation of the Yoruba community...).

Examples: Muri Ogunbiyi, Razak Omotoyossi... Etc.

If Jonathan Ligali of Montpellier can be approached and gotten to play for us then our Search for Ikeme's cover could be over with the likes of Alampasu, Osigwe and Nwokolor to serve as rising extra quality back-ups.

Matuidi committed a clear red card offence. There was no two ways about it. He went over the ball and shockingly stayed on the field. That was after a brutal tackle on Ambrose and an earlier tackle on Onazi.

Yet you come up with excuse is for losers. Simple. The ref was bias. Feigning injuries would compound the bad situation our players were in.

And please, Barcelona did not feign injuries in every game. They did it against physical sides to stop unfair tackles.

LEICESTER CITY

The Premier League holders have been struggling to replicate their form of last season which they displayed en route to their historic triumph. With the departure of Frenchman N’Golo Kante to Chelsea, a huge void has been left at the centre of the midfield which is yet to be accounted for.

John Obi Mikel can very much be the man the
Champions can look to solve their woes. With
Leicester on the verge of advancing to the round of 16 in the UCL, the prospect of Champions League football can also be an added incentive for the Nigerian. Ironically, he will have the chance to establish his authority on the position of a player who took his place at Chelsea.


CRYSTAL PALACE


Yet another Premier League team who have
struggled real hard this season with their
defensive organisation are South East Londoners
Crystal Palace. Currently sitting a point above the drop zone they have conceded 19 goals in 11 matches this season. The addition of the Nigerian will be a handsome addition to the squad and will help solidify the centre of midfield along side the likes of James McArthur, Joe Ledley and Yohan Cabaye.

I first noticed him when he featured for France at the 2011 WYC in Colombia. He was their first choice goalie. Recall France won that tourney with Paul Pogba also in that team.

Oliseh, as coach then, once had his eye on him. He is just 24yrs old and I think he may be one for the future and may also prove to be a good cover for Ikeme. He is currently 2nd choice goalie at Montpellier.

The notable players in the French team then were Cedric Bakambu now with Villarreal, who murdered our defence, Gael Kakuta of then Chelsea FC, Lacazette of now Lyon and of course Nathan Ligali. We paraded the likes of Uche Nwaofor and Daniel Uchechi (who gave us a false hope when he gave a last gasp equalizer against the French, then they murdered us in extra 30mins. In that same tourney we also played against England who also paraded another Nigerian in Reece Wabara who was with Mancity Academy, though he was stretchered off about 5mins into the encounter with us. That was the same year Sammy Ameobi left our camp for the English camp but was not paraded against us.

U r the arc guard of the hall of experience and a grey haired historian of the Nigerian football, I didn't expect u to goof as u just did. Take time before sir Forgiveness pounces.

Mexico beat them 3-1 in the third-place game. Watched the game myself.

Ahmed Musa was the reason why we lost to France. Dude was missing easy sitters left, right and center. Even Sani Emmanuel came in and hit the bar to show that the french team then no make sense.

Then there is something critical there too. Griezman played as a midfielder in that team. He later played as a winger for Real Sociedad and now he plays off the striker for Athletico, check that development. That's why the lad can play any position he finds himself in. If our Nigerian academies can adopt similar strategies(like training a fullback as a winger first as well as varying the positions of their young players through the season) then we will develop far better talents. NFF: We Tried To Stop Gernot Rohr From
Inviting Victor Moses For Algeria Clash




A top official of the Technical Committee of the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed
that, they did almost all they could to stop Gernot Rohr from inviting Victor Moses for Nigeria’s World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Algeria.


Moses scored a brace for Nigeria as they ran out
3-1 winners over Algeria to further strengthened
their lead as group leaders in Group B of the CAF
World Cup 2018 Qualifiers.

However some members of the Technical
Committee were not in support of his invitation
for the game, due to reports that he deliberately
skipped the last game against Zambia in Ndola.

The Chelsea wing back called up injured after a
league game for Chelsea, a week before Nigeria’s first World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Zambia, and some Nigerians felt he feigned injury to skip the tie.


”I must confess, some members of the Technical Committee myself inclusive never wanted Victor Moses in the team for the game against Algeria, but Rohr insisted on him”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.


”Maybe we read the papers too much but we
were convinced to an extent that he skipped the tie against Zambia deliberately but after his
performance against Algeria, am glad Rohr
ignored our pressure to drop him”.

you are mistaking a possessive team for a team that holds up play. Mikel won't even suit a fast possessive team because he likes to hold the ball a little longer and calm things down, that's what these teams need now. West Ham for example have only their defenders and strikers on the pitch, once their midfielders get the ball the shoot it forward almost immediately. Now insert Mikel, when he gets the ball, he will slow it down, allowing his teammates to take up their proper positions before he releases a pass and they can build from their. Insert Mikel in Barcelona and he won't make it there at all, because only two persons are allowed to slow the ball down at Barca, Messi and Neymar and tasking Mikel to play a quick game won't work. West Ham would be great if you ask me
