You nailed it on training wing backs first as wingers. That's the new school way of training wing backs.
Example, Hector Belerin was bought from Barca as a devastating winger. He was coached by Arsenal and was converted as a RWB, in Little over 4yrs we are looking at one of the best Wing backs in the morden game.

The training of wing backs have evolved from what we saw in the 90s. Where full backs are first trained as CB.. Guys like Maldini, Thuram etc...

I bring this up because I feel Sone Aluko would have made a world class Wing back if he had the luck of being trained by elite developmental managers like Wenger, Klop, Favre, etc.... Instead he spent most of his time with average British managers in the lower ranks of English and Scottish football who couldn't see beyond their nose.

exactly! We are praising Moses' workrate but Aluko's own is even more than his. I remember a Fulham match that I watched, the guy was running for 90 mins non-stop. He can defend and he can also take on a player, I don't really know if he can play with his left foot well but if he can then Iwobi might have a serious contender for that his LMF position. In the match against Algeria, immediately Moses switched wings to the left, the Algerians started moving through the right because Iwobi wasn't going to defend, if we can have two side midfielders who can defend and attack with such high workrate then our team would be devastating. I know that Iwobi fanboys will probably come for my head because I have suggested that Aluko can bench him but that's just the reality

Barcelona under Guardiola, especially in his first season held the ball long and distributed it smoothly. I think Villarreal, two seasons ago and the Spanish junior sides under Luis Milla.

When I refer to Mikel playing under a possessive coach, I mean a coach and most important a team who have a history of keeping long possession and relishes slow build-up plays.

Mikel will thrive in such situations. A coach like that will adore Mikel.

In a place like West Ham, you might like Mikel slowing down the play but the fans may criticise it.

Mikel needs the ball coming through him while he distributes it with his ticking passes. These clubs do not have that history.

the barcelona team then was known for it's one-touch football. Nobody held the ball longer than required. Players like Xavi and Busquets(who Mikel can replace directly) had up to 150 passes per match which wouldn't be possible if they held up the ball like Mikel. Mikel won't really thrive in that team especially when they start drawing those triangles all over the pitch. Mikel will thrive in a team where most of their possession is in the defensive half, but for Barca-like teams that retain possession in the opponents half(ie attacking half), Mikel will be lost.

PS: nobody cares about the fans these days. Newcastle fans called for Pardew's head, he left and they got relegated, results matter

If Aluko is good enough to bench Iwobi, i'm sure he would be moved to another position except those players in those positions are rated above him by the coach.

This was under Ancelotti. Mikel is also very brilliant when it comes to one touch passing game. That is the part of his game I cherish a lot.

Even during the World Youth Championship in 2005, Mikel used more of his one touch game to control the midfield than his dribbling skills and ball shielding ability.

I think you are wrong here sir, the French didn't win it that year and Pogba didn't play in that team but the next team after that team. The notable players in the French team then were Cedric Bakambu now with Villarreal, who murdered our defence, Gael Kakuta of then Chelsea FC, Lacazette of now Lyon and of course Nathan Ligali. We paraded the likes of Uche Nwaofor and Daniel Uchechi (who gave us a false hope when he gave a last gasp equalizer against the French, then they murdered us in extra 30mins. In that same tourney we also played against England who also paraded another Nigerian in Reece Wabara who was with Mancity Academy, though he was stretchered off about 5mins into the encounter with us. CHAN Eagles skipper Chima Akas set for Turkey transfer

CHAN Eagles skipper Chima Akas is set to join a Turkish club when the transfer window reopens in Europe in January.

“I am looking forward to sign in Turkey,” Akas himself confirmed.
“The other details of the transfer are still confidential.”

The left back last featured for Enyimba and he is expected to depart for Turkey next month.

In August, he captained the NPFL All-Stars to a playing tour of Spain.
He also expressed confidence he will soon stage a return to the Super Eagles.

“I believe I still have a place in the Super Eagles. I will continue to work hard,” said Akas, who enjoyed a fine run in the national team when Sunday Oliseh was in charge.

AF Nigeria 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon
Minister: Govt stop sponsoring Eagles World Cup qualification

Nigerian sports minister Solomon Dalung has sparked off another controversy after he said the government should withdraw its sponsorship of the Super Eagles qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup because it is too expensive.

He said money saved by government from such a withdrawal could be better invested in developing the game, while also arguing that African countries should make the AFCON top priority and not the World Cup.

Dalung made his controversial suggestions on a radio interview with the Voice of America Hausa Service.

He called on the country’s government to withdraw its sponsorship of the Super Eagles on their journey to Russia 2018, stressing that the Nations Cup and not the World Cup should be the priority of all Africa countries including Nigeria.

He said World Cup qualification was money consuming and energy sapping and would rather advise Nigeria and other African countries invest these funds into more meaningful ventures to develop the game at all levels.

The government had to bail out the Super Eagles with a 100 million Naira for them to fly out to Zambia in October.

Nigeria lead their qualifying group with six points after two rounds of matches, ahead of Cameroon (two points), Zambia (a point) and Algeria (a point).

The minister’s latest comments will come as a rude shock to chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who have maintained a steady and cordial relationship with the minister in recent times.

Dalung was leader of delegation when the Eagles went, saw and conquered in Ndola against Zambia and he also accompanied Nigerian Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to visit the Eagles in training before the match against Algeria.

Rohr Wants Super Eagles Players To Have Strong Bond Off The Pitch Like Iwobi & Iheanacho, Ekong & Balogun

In his bid to strengthen the personal relationship among players of the Super Eagles, Technical Adviser of the team Gernot Rohr has put measures in place to help the players have a strong bond.

The Franco-German coach believes when players are tightly knitted off the pitch, it will enhance their on pitch performance, citing the case of Arsenal Alex Iwobi and Manchester City Kelechi Iheanacho.

The duo are very close outside the pitch and it’s clear to see on the pitch, as they get along easily.

Another case study is central defence duo of Leon Balogun and Troost Ekong.

“Oyibo Wall” as they are now called are roommates in camp, and it is believed that their close relationship has impacted in their strong combination at the heart of Nigeria’s defence.

”We are trying to build a family atmosphere in camp. Players need to spend time together off the pitch, it helps performance on the pitch. Measures will be put in place to help our players bond properly” Rohr told Owngoalnigeria.com

Leon Balogun Success With Nigeria Could Convince German Born Defender Akpoguma To Play For Nigeria- Rohr

German born Nigerian defender Kelvin Akpoguma is still very much in the sight of the national team selectors of Nigeria, with coach Gernot Rohr confident about the chances of the 21 year old playing for Nigeria.

Akpoguma is already a full fledged international for Germany at youth level but Rohr believes he stands a greater chance of fulfilling his international potentials with Nigeria than Germany.

Presently out on loan to second division German side Fortuna Dusseldorf from Bundesliga side Hoffeinheim, the hard tackling defender is one of the pillars of the promotion chasing team.

Although he has reiterated his desires to eye a spot in the German senior national team from the U-21s, Rohr is of the opinion that the success of Leon Balogun could force him to have a rethink.

”It’s so normal for players to inspire other players. If Nigeria achieve good things with Leon Balogun in the team. Naturally it could help convince other players from same country to switch allegiance to Nigeria. We hope it happens”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Highest Paid Nigerian Footballer: Obafemi Martins Earning Twice As Much As Mikel, Musa In Top 5

The weekly earnings of Nigerian players based abroad have often been a subject of discussion among football lovers in the soccer crazy West Africa nation.

Owngoalnigeria.com did a search using various means to know the earnings of some players in high paying leagues, and from our search Shanghai Shenhua Obafemi Martins is currently the highest earning Nigerian player.

Martins is earning twice as much as Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi in China, with the Chelsea man second in the list of highest earning Nigerian players.

Leicester City big money buy Ahmed Musa is third on the list, while Mikel’s teammate Victor Moses is fourth with Fenerbache Emmanuel Emenike rounding up the top five.

1. Obafemi Martins £180,000
2. Mikel John Obi. £75,000
3. Ahmed Musa. £60,000
4. Victor Moses. £45,000
5. Emmanuel Emenike £40,000

EXCLUSIVE: Seattle Sounders And Al-Arabi Battling To Secure KuPS Forward Gbolahan Salami

Former topscorer in the Nigeria Premier league Gbolahan Salami, who had a successful first season with Finnish side KuPS could leave the team in the January transfer window.

Salami ended the season in Finland with 14 goals, a new record of goals scored in a single season for his team, but reports exclusively gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com has it that Qatari side Al-Arabi and MLS team Seattle Sounders have established contact with his representatives.

The 26 year old has one more year to go on his contract after KuPS triggered the option of a further year, but they are open to his sale if interested teams meet their valuation of the power playing forward.

”Yes there is contact from the MLS, particularly from Seattle Sounders, we wait still because Al-Arabi of Qatar have also indicated interest in his services. January isn’t far off but I don’t think he will be sold in January”, Kazeem Tunji who works with Salami’s intermediary told Owngoalnigeria.com.

”Offers will come in from other European countries but for now the serious bid on the table is from the teams I mentioned. If he stays at KuPS till next summer, the prospect of joining a big team in mainstream Europe can’t be ruled out”.

But you are also wrong in mentioning "Daniel Uchechi" (he featured at the 2009 edition not 2011)...... wink

The thing is it seems i have better memories of the oldies than the more recent. Been occupied with so many thingsl in the recent past unlike in the 80s and 90s when it was all football for me.

For instance i would have to think a little to tell hu won the 2009, 2011, or 2013 WYC but i can tell without thinking who won the 1987, 1989, or 1991 WYC. I can even tell the score lines of those 80s and 90s finals bt for the more recent ones i may even make google my friend. grin

Thing is Rohr is considering much younger players with exceptional talent.

That's true. He picked up a serious injury on duty with The Super Eagles.

He announced his "retirement" from Nigeria (more like putting his international career on hold) in 2013 to focus on his club career. But about a year later or so, he made a U-turn.

Well, I dont know if the horrors of his injury back then which contributed to his decline will make him decide against playing for Nigeria again but I wanna believe he wont mind honoring Nigeria's call.

He has just 11 international caps and scored 4 goals... Not a bad return if you ask me.

I just want to let u know that Yaya saved ur butts today and I told u so lol.
