You nailed it on training wing backs first as wingers. That's the new school way of training wing backs.
Example, Hector Belerin was bought from Barca as a devastating winger. He was coached by Arsenal and was converted as a RWB, in Little over 4yrs we are looking at one of the best Wing backs in the morden game.

The training of wing backs have evolved from what we saw in the 90s. Where full backs are first trained as CB.. Guys like Maldini, Thuram etc...

I bring this up because I feel Sone Aluko would have made a world class Wing back if he had the luck of being trained by elite developmental managers like Wenger, Klop, Favre, etc.... Instead he spent most of his time with average British managers in the lower ranks of English and Scottish football who couldn't see beyond their nose.

When I refer to Mikel playing under a possessive coach, I mean a coach and most important a team who have a history of keeping long possession and relishes slow build-up plays.

Mikel will thrive in such situations. A coach like that will adore Mikel.

In a place like West Ham, you might like Mikel slowing down the play but the fans may criticise it.

Mikel needs the ball coming through him while he distributes it with his ticking passes. These clubs do not have that history.

exactly! We are praising Moses' workrate but Aluko's own is even more than his. I remember a Fulham match that I watched, the guy was running for 90 mins non-stop. He can defend and he can also take on a player, I don't really know if he can play with his left foot well but if he can then Iwobi might have a serious contender for that his LMF position. In the match against Algeria, immediately Moses switched wings to the left, the Algerians started moving through the right because Iwobi wasn't going to defend, if we can have two side midfielders who can defend and attack with such high workrate then our team would be devastating. Players like Xavi and Busquets(who Mikel can replace directly) had up to 150 passes per match which wouldn't be possible if they held up the ball like Mikel. Mikel won't really thrive in that team especially when they start drawing those triangles all over the pitch. Mikel will thrive in a team where most of their possession is in the defensive half, but for Barca-like teams that retain possession in the opponents half(ie attacking half), Mikel will be lost.

Kelechi Nwakali was "awesome" in his side's 3-2 comeback win friday night. Wow!

This was under Ancelotti. Mikel is also very brilliant when it comes to one touch passing game. That is the part of his game I cherish a lot.

Even during the World Youth Championship in 2005, Mikel used more of his one touch game to control the midfield than his dribbling skills and ball shielding ability.
