sukkottt: Lagos was made capital because of its favourable location on the sea. It's West Africa's most natural harbour. Google is your friend bro! Stop all this your chest beating, it's no use! So why did you lose the capital city status to Abuja? I guess your people suddenly became dumb asses, abi? Nigeria is really divided with our youths chasing shadows! I am sure Nigeria would have benefited greatly if you and I came together to establish a venture as profitable and competitive as multichoise or alibaba for instance notwithstanding that I am Igbo and you Yoruba. It's high time we Nigerian youths started directing our energies to worthwhile things instead of making a mockery of our nationhood here on Nairaland and other social media! At this rate, we will never catch up with the likes of south Africa not to talk of China and Europe! I have said my own sha. One love! 3 Likes |

Rapmoney: I can almost bet you are a trader going by the way you reason. For your info, not all of us fancy being traders in life -- some of us are just more ambitious and aim higher in life I guess . So the fact that you would attribute not being an importer as laziness speaks volumes about your ignorance and twisted orientation. For the last time, being an importer isn't rocket science, neither does it require any special skill, and secondly Igbos aren't the only ones into importation. Get that into your medula oblongata. Geez! You folks seem to have serious comprehension issues. 3 Likes |

Funny enough, I agree with Fayose on this. Igbos have the most important resource needed in a nation - human resources. I have always maintained that Ignos are the most resourceful and industrious set of people in Nigeria. You will find them everywhere. They have been able to develop some of their cities despite lean resources from the FG e.g. Onitsha, Awka and Enugu. Others will eventually cope but it will take some considerable time. South south will survive because of oil but they don't have the human resource capable of accelerating their development. Yorubas will have to rely so much on Lagos to cope. The North will be the worst hit as they have relied solely on oil for so long. 2 Likes |

sukkottt: Coming from Europe, Lagos was the close port of entry into Nigeria from the Atlantic. So, it was more advantageous to be chosen by our colonial masters as their capital. And as such, was one of the first territories to be seized by the British in 1887, the British then made it their headquarters and started the development. They didn't seize it or landed there because of the wisdom or abitilies of the people living there at that time, the contrary is the truth, the Bristish saw a good closer port of entry and seized it inspite of the objections and resistance of the locals. Most of all these is documented history. 1 Like |

linearity:very myopic. before colonialism lagos was developed with slavery money by oba kosoko and madam tinubu and oba akitoye. lagos was somewhat developed before colonialism by the white man. they came to lagos and found a very favorable environment to operate because it had been developed is why they decided to choose to stay. 1 Like |

RockHard: Sometimes you allow your head to do the thinking instead of your emotions... 1)If Nigeria breaks up today, the new Igbo nation will be an extra or additional ECOWAS country with FREE EXIT and ENTRY into all fellow countries including Yoruba and other parts ...study ECOWAS treaties to understand better... 2) NOBODY loses anything because NO country is an island...ALL are dependent on each other depending on economies of scale, comparative advantage, and cost benefit analysis...NO country is also self sufficient. 3)IGBO like other migrants eg Chinese can be found in all countries and all corners. I have a video of a Greece man discussing the Nigerian nation especially the dexterity, industrious, sagacious, and enterprising cum migrant nature of Igbo...wish I can upload it here Does Chinese lose anything from migrating all over the world including Nigeria? An Igbo adage says, onye njenje ka onye isi awo ihe ama... 4)So how do they lose in market size? They have free exit and entry into ALL ECOWAS countries including your backyard. 2 Likes |

sukkottt: You are putting the cart before the horse, The Portuguese first made contact with Lagos in 1472, through the Atlantic Ocean exploration. Oba Kosoko did not start his reign until 1845. I believe you would have noticed the similarity between the name 'Lagos, Nigeria' and 'Lagos, Portugal', another port city in Portugal. Lagos means lake in Portuguese and the Portuguese first named 'Lago de Curamo'. Also, he did not fly slaves to America or Europe, it was the colonial masters that bought these slaves in exchange for the money he got. In 1472 when westerners first step into Lagos, it was no more developed than other port areas of Nigeria, which were further away from Europe. I can't believe that, in the face of the overwhelming evidences, you are arguing against the fact that, Lagos was favored because of it's port city and proximity factors and the development of the region can be directly linked to the visit of the westerners. 1 Like |
