The celebrant himself, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan shared this message, via his Facebook page:

“On the occasion of my birthday today, I thank my God who has enabled me live up to age 59. To Him alone be the glory. “Let me also appreciate those world leaders and statesmen who have wished me well on this day as well as my beloved Nigerian people who have shown me a great outpouring of love.

“What am I without my people? I thank you all and as you remember my birthday with me, my prayers are that God will also reward you. GEJ.” The party is currently on at his residence in Abuja. Those present at the party include: Femi Fani-Kayode, Timi Dakolo, Deji Adeyanju, Jonathan’s cousin Robert Azibaola, among others.

The President as a "title" can be used to refer to former occupant of the office just like a former Senator is called Senator and former Ambassadors are called Ambassadors.

However, the former occupants will not be referred to when talking about the position.

Because they are referring to him and not the office. If it was the office, nobody would call him Mr President.

Don't forget that though a former General, Buhari was usually addressed as "Gen Buhari"... Also factor the cases of former Senators and Ambassadors; and former ministers and Reps that still go with the Honourable title.

Gosh! The title is the "President", the status is "former". When referring to him, it is the prerogative of the writer to either publish or ignore the status as long as the reference is not the Office of the President.
