Chapter One Kaylee looked across the table in the garden to meet the gaze of David. He looked dazzling in the navy blue three piece suit she had gotten him as a two year anniversary gift. It had been a little too big at first but he kept it despite pleas from her to return it and get a smaller size. It now suited him like a second skin, defining his well muscled biceps he had spent the last year developing. “Wow,” she gushed inwardly. He was truly every woman’s dream. David stood up and walked toward Kaylee and sat on her side of the table. “You look pretty,” he said as he tilted his head to the side as though to get a clearer view of her face. Kaylee looked away making a failed attempt to hide a blush. “Of course I do, I mean, you made me this pretty dress which is from good fabric and your great designs,” She said. David chuckled. She wasn’t lying. After all, he had a degree in fashion designing and came from a long line of one. He wasn’t made yet but the few clients he had all agreed that his hands could turn fabrics from straw to gold. “I don’t mean the dress, silly. I meant you. Even if you were putting on rags, you’d still look pretty. You know what?” “What?” Kaylee asked with a smile. “Let’s dance” David replied as ran his hands through her hair, took her hands and led her to the middle of the garden. As expected she was horrible. Ballroom dancing had never been her thing. She was more into hip-hop, or according to her “song with a boom, boom, boom beat to it,” whatever that meant. She stepped on his toes a few times but luckily made it through the entire song. They both did a mock bow and laughed. He took her hands again and led her further into the garden, where they found a bench close to the fountain which had a sculpture of cupid pointing his arrow to the sky. Perfect spot, David thought. “I have something to tell you,” they both said in unison Kaylee let him go first. She knew what he had to say would not be as important, or rather, as heart breaking as her. She looked up at him as he began to speak. “Kay,” he began. “Remember when we went to Christianna’s party with my dad’s red convertible and it began to rain but we couldn’t close the roof so we were soaked?” Kaylee let out a light laugh. How could she ever forget that moment. She had warned him against using his dad’s car but he didn’t listen as that model was the rave of the moment and would be good for show-off. It was unfortunate when the rains came and the roof was unable to retract. By the time they got home, they were both shivering to the bones. A warm bath and hot tea was able to bring her temperature back to normal but David didn’t have it better. He ran a fever throughout the night and she kept awake to check on him. She had never imagined that moment happening to her. It was something she only saw on TV which ended with the characters falling in love and that was exactly what she found at the end of the day, love. “I’ve been thinking and I’ve decided that if that moment should ever happen again, I want it to be with you. I want you to be the one that takes care of me when I’m down, comfort me when I’m weak and be by my side during the good times and I’ll do the same for you. So what I’m asking is—” he paused to and bring out the small black box from his pocket as he kneeled. “Be my wife.” Kaylee looked down and put her hands to her mouth to cover her shock. For a year she had waited for the proposal, a month ago she might have said yes but things had not turned out well in her favour. “David, no,” She said, turning away quickly and walking to the fountain. David followed. “Why?” he asked as he hugged her from behind, his shock at her refusal evident in his voice. “I can’t, I just can’t” she replied as she wiped away a tear and freed herself from his grasp. “You have to understand that I just can’t do this” “What can’t I understand? What is it, Kay? We can solve it together.” “But we can’t, there is no us anymore” She said as she wiped more tears from her face. “Stop, let’s just go. I can’t hear this anymore” he said stomping his feet lightly on the ground and turned to walk out of the park The drive home took 45 minutes, give or take, but was made longer by the harrowing silence that filled the car interrupted by a sneeze and half hearted reply of “bless you”. “I guess this is it,” David said as he pulled across Kay’s gate and pressed the unlock button at his side of the car. “Yeah” “You don’t have to do this. At least, stay with me even if we won’t get married,” he said as he held her hand. “You deserve lasting happiness, that’s something I can’t give to you,” Kay said as she freed her hands from his. “You’re my happiness,” “You’re not mine,” Kaylee said as she quickly opened the door and walked towards her gate. She knocked hard on it producing a loud banging sound. Her gateman quickly opened the gate and she went in, shutting it with the same loud bang her knock produced. David drove away. 16 Likes 16 Shares |
