Trust me, in Africa we are so indoctrinated into superstitions that we can even hallucinate about them. How many people have these so-called witches and cats killed? Is there any verifiable proof of this?

While western countries are busy turning their cities into heaven on earth, Africans are still trying to kill cats in order to make heaven.

My dear these things are not superstions. Because you have not experience it does not make it a lie.
Even the white man knows these things exist. Even the bible told us that the devil entered into the serpent to deceive eve while in another chapter of the bible Jesus cast demons into pigs.

Haven't you seen or heard of the confession of witches and the ocultic people telling how they use different animals to carry out their evil activities ? Do you say their confession are not true?
Like I said before it is only an Africa man that wants to deceive himself, will say these things are superstions.

Op you are very correct, the erroneous perfection of cats is just terrible. I have kept cats before, sincerely speaking; cats are among the cutest, and friendliest animals I've ever seen. Besides, if cats are witches or wizards as touted by some, then so are goats, antelopes, and grascutters..

I am American and I despise Cats...Lots of people all over the country despise cats.

If I could, I would exterminate them all.

Cats are poor pets, they will Meow and ask a robber for a back rub if he broke into your house.

They are docile and above all utterly Useless, I despise them and no I am not religious or superstitious, I am Atheist.

Why will I take care of an animal that doesn't benefit me? A dog will make me go on runs, make me happy, keep me warm with its fur...A cat?
look at the trash coming from a certain atheist,. You are a disgrace to atheist. Its not a must to love cats but why will you threathen to kill them,. People love pet animals for different reasons and there nature, a cat and dog have a varied nature, why would you expect a cat to defend or guard you from an intruder

It is so unfortunate that in my country, Nigeria, cats are one of the most assaulted, stigmatized and unfortunate animals. Nigeria's level of religiosity, especially among Southern Christians, and the belief in witchcraft, as well as other superstitious beliefs, have made these cute, adorable and shy animals one of the most hated in the country. At the mention or sighting of a cat, the Christian fundamentalists will shout "blood of Jesus", "you cannot suck my blood", "my enemies have come", etc. The unfortunate cat may end up being killed over nothing. These thoughts can be traced to the influence of dumb and stupid low budget movies such as as Helen Ukpabio's End of the Wicked, the same movie that advocated for the branding of children as witches and which led to an international outrage just a few years ago. In her low quality movie, children transform to cats, owl, snakes, etc, to wreck havoc. Oh, how I pity for my nation and its mostly gullible Christian stock. It is one thing not to be a cat person, as many are in Western countries, but to hate cats because of a belief that they can harm you spiritually... O C'mon!

Here are some highly stupid theories Nigerians have concerning cats:

1. Cats are witches or possessed: if cats can be witches or can be possessed, can't the same argument be made for dogs, goats, sheep, rats, and HUMANS? Why take that of a cat to be peculiar? Secondly, I don't believe in the bullsh*t that cats can be possessed. That's mere African Christian stupidity and ignorance. Cats are adorable creatures and won't harm you. If truly cats can be possessed, then it is those who can possess a cat that should be feared, not the cats themselves. God created this animal and it is not our place to kill them or hate them for being what they are.

2. Cats move only at night: it should be noted that cats are mainly nocturnal. By that, I mean they are more active at nights. So also with owls, and other persecuted animals in Nigeria. Animals usually evolve to be more active at day or night or both due to various factors. We can't persecute them for that.

3. Cats have scary eyes: this argument is usually so dumb that I wonder about the sanity of those who say it. Cat's eyes are beautiful and they usually become round or "snaky" to accommodate extra light and see well. Their eyes also shine at night because that's how they were created and it makes them see much better.

4. Cats are not good pets: this is not true. Cats are adorable pets who worship their owners and love them. They are clean and independent. They are agile and strong. They answer to names and protect you from rodents. In short, cats can compete with dogs anytime, any day.

While there are more points that Nigerians make, these are the ones I feel the need to correct the most. Most of these Nigerian pastors that feed off the ignorance of people have caused so much hatred for these adorable creatures. If you are guilty of cat persecution and you are a Christian, you need to reevaluate your Christianity. I live you all with this:

All things bright and beautiful,
All CREATURES, great and small
All things bright and wonderful,
THE LORD GOD made them ALL!

- Mathias Orhero

I prefer dogs to cats.

Dogs are better pets than cats.I think most folks would agree.

Nigerian cats move in the night but oyibo cat move anytime day or night. So nocturnal stuff is not true.

Whether you believe or not, in Africa folks live in a strange and mysterious environment. Not every Animal that you see is really an animal, hence many folks have the disposition to react in a negative way towards cats.

We have like 20 wild cats in our farm behind our house
Tried keeping one kitten as a pet n my grandmom brought olive oil n sprayed the house n then killed it
I was so damn angry
It was the day i told her to grow up n stop believing in nonsense that she has been shackled to all this crap
I was really pissed
Really wish we have animal service n protective agencies
Would go a long way to help these cats or put them down responsibly if it is needed
Wish nigerians and africans weren't so backwards

Finally!! Someone has addressed this issue..i have to say that Nigerians are one of the most backward, superstitious , idi0tic species of humans on earth.

The other day in my office a beautiful eagle was killed... all because they believe it was a witch. i wept and felt so sad when even so called learned colleagues where like sir, its because you dont know o, this thing na witch.

And we have so called pastors in this country like Adeboye, Oyedepo and Chris Oyakhilomeh who should have addressed this issue long ago if they weren't so focused on stealing their church funds and adding more followers to take advantage off...

I weep for Nigerians, small wonder why this country is so backward and the people praise mediocrity

So men of God should leave preaching to start addressing trivial issues like cat matters.

How you dey reason sef?
Na you commission these men of God to become Animal rights activist?

I love cats. But there is something mystical about them. Even in ancient Egypt they were revered and treated as royalty. And in western movies that are potrayed as pets to witches. I love them still!
they protect its owner from evil spirits and evil people... Strucking the cat calms emotional and mental bodies .. True fact... Will be getting one myself soon

The only reason Nigerian cats move around at night is because of people that threaten to kill them. Its a sad thing. I love cats especially the completely black ones. There are many of them around the place that I live... grin

Those that persecute cats in Nigeria are 80% pentecostal Christians.
Den why didn't the writer write it as the topic other dan diverting 2 d main issue... Honestly i know Nigerians don't like cats much, but blaming all on a religion is quite unfair.
This op is just meant to ridicule christians because they are so spiritual!!

So true and heartbreaking.I still remember my experience sometime in September 2013 while serving in a community school in Enugu.
I was on my way to the corpers lodge late that evening when i noticed some students hurling stones under the school water tank.On further enquiries i learnt they were out to destroy a witch in form of a cat that has been tormenting them for ages.I quickly chased them out and stretched my hands underneath the tank.It was the most beautiful kitten I've ever seen with snow white furs puffed up in fear.I cuddled her closely and made for my lodge to the amazement of my students.
Apart from her injured left hind limbs, the little beauty was perfectly ok.She shouldn't be more than a day old and i kept wondering what might have happened to her mother.I prepared milk for her which she sipped hungrily and then started this ceaseless meows that soon got to my neighbors. They banged on my door demanding i dispose off the demonic creature while some murmured that i was a cult member. It didnt bother me till my roomate arrived from PH.
The sight of a cat close to his bed space almost gave him a heart attack. We had a heated argument about it and he threatened to make a report to the authorities. To cut the story short,i later gave in to their pressure and took the kitten safely to the school field where i gently laid her under an old wooden school desk, then returned back home.I still remember hearing her faraway meows even while in my lodge for hours till midnight and all was quiet. Cats are one of the best pets you can have. They kill mice and snakes. They clean and walk themselves. They only want a little food and to snuggle under your feet. I enjoy having a cat around. However I don't like seeing people living with 20 cats. It's not hygienic. As the author posted, it's ok to not like cats. But to kill and torture them because you think they are demons is backwards and ignorant. Which way Nigerian...which way...

In onitsha, A very good friend of mine had his pet cat thrown into d river niger by his own very religious mother. His mother drove home to d son's wails and complaints on her action. The most astonishing thing is that they were stunned to find d same cat meowing at d door of their four storey apartment some hours later all drenched in water! This is a very true story.
