IBADAN THE ANCIENT CITY AND THE THIRD LARGEST CITY IN AFRICA DOESN'T HAVE A SLUM BUT NAIROBI HAVE 7 IN THE TOP 20 LIST. THE LARGEST SLUM IN AFRICA IS IN NAIROBI WITH ALMOST HALF OF NAIROBI'S POPULATION.

obaaderemi: HAVE IT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q67gldZ1P_8 http://www.hfmagazineonline.com/top-5-slums-in-africa/ http://www.ibtimes.com/5-biggest-slums-world-381338 http://www.africaranking.com/20-worst-slums-in-africa/ http://borgenproject.org/5-largest-slums-world/ Kibera: A neighborhood in Nairobi, Kenya, the Kibera slum is the second largest in Africa, with anywhere from 200,000 to one million residents. Kibera is often used as the model for the environmental impact of informal settlement. Without state sponsored infrastructure like plumbing, residents resort to using flying toilets, which are just plastic bags that can be tossed onto the street. However, Kibera is also one prototype for urban renewal and slum upgrading projects. For about $300,000, U.N. HABITAT is trying to transform all of Kenya's slums, staring with the construction of roads and other services and an actual mapping of the area. Rounding out a list of the 10 biggest slums would include communities in Bogota, Colombia; Baghdad, Iraq, Venezuela, and Ghana. The conditions in slums are surely a seriously problem with global implications, but slums themselves do not have to be a problem for anyone. The global population is booming -- the seven billionth citizen of Earth was born only a month ago -- and people need to live somewhere. In the modern, global economy, urbanization is a trend that is impossible to buck and informal settlements are a necessary part of the process. There are ways to make these communities more hospitable and less hazardous on an environmental level. Some cities in Colombia are extending public transportation lines out to the slums, which as encouraged economic and urban development. Additionally, others see the population density of slums as a blessing rather than a curse, and perhaps as the future of cities. New, conceptual low-income housing projects are springing up in the United States that could be a model for the developing world. Single-family stacked houses like the ones currently in Brazil and Mexico could be the prototype for the next generation of cities.

Jay254: You should be ashamed of yourself. Nairobi has 3 million people and only 1 of your slum have over 1 millioin people. Secondly, Nairobi have 7 slums in top 20 in Africa, should we add the population of the other 6 slums in the top 20 list and those that didn't make the list together? Do the addition and you will discover 2/3 of the population in Nairobi stay in slums. Lagos on the other hand with a population of almost 20 million people have 4 slums and the one with the highest population is just 150,000 - 250,000 people. Ibadan with popolation of over 3 million people is not on the list at all. PLEASE TELL US WHO IS BETTER. I've posted over 50 different pictures of IBADAN the third largest city in AFRICA. In Nigeria we are building 37 different states not 1 or 2 like kenya. If you need me to post from other states too i might do it but it seems am wasting my time with you guys cause you are not even to be compared with Nigeria. |

14:If Mr Dangote didn't jump up, please who else would? This is a ginormous businessman who has investments in several African countries and who knows the return on investment from country to country. But you can be pardoned for making it about Nigerians generally, of course, these are a people who are of high intelect and see most other Africans as the smaller brothers that they truly are. Later on they sent the GDP stats to IMF as $415bn compared to bloomberg claim of $275bn based on their currency exchange rate with the dollar. Some nigerian commentator was furius on TV explaining the Nigerian GDP calculation, saying that the oil sector is calculated in dollars and not Naira. This is largely a misinformation. Bloomberg used the exchange rate as at July for GDP figures of December 2015. That methodology was simply faulty and that was what KPMG even argued against. Current exchange rates were supposed to be matched with current local GDP figures for each country to give a clearer picture of things. The adjustment was eventually made and that was what led to the affirmation by IMF of Nigeria's true status. It's not a farce, Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy. You cannot have a GDP of $500bn and only raise a tax revanue of $21bn, the maths does not add-up. Even if you can come up with an excuse of the economy being largely informal, $21bn is too little considering 90% of it comes from oil. So my question is, how did you quantify that informal economy or it was just by estimate. On top of that you claim to float your currency, while you peg it at N305 to the dollar, while the parallel market is at N470 to the dollar. SA has only one currency exchange rate, unlike nigeria which has more than 4 currency exchange rates, N290, N305, N400, N470 to the doller, which one is the correct one.The ability to raise revenue from tax is mainly dependent on the institution responsible for it and the political willingness. This has been lacking in Nigeria for many years due to free flow of oil revenues. And you ask why that makes up 90% of the tax revenue? It would even make more sense for you to talk down on the absence of such system rather than claim Nigeria cannot simply raise the revenue because, according to you, the economy is simply not big enough. By the way, under the current FIRS boss, Nigeria non oil revenue has increased. Of course with a decrease in revenue from oil so it's hard to tell the overall impact of such improvement. But it's definitely a work in progress. Nigeria is going through what venezuela is going through. You can please save your doomsday prophecies for another country because Nigeria is never going to get to that anytime soon. Not up to 30% of the population work with the government, Nigerians are largely entrepreneurs and so there is a trough to how bad things can ever get even with this current seemingly directionless government. Speaking of debts, Nigeria is still very lowly indebted compared to South Africa for instance. The depth to GDP ratio is one of the lowest in the whole world giving her a better posture to borrow. And borrowing is never a crime if it is rightly used to improve infrastructure. I don't want to start reeling out the debt profiles of countries like USA, China and the Euros. And on Nigerians leaving the country for other places, take this from me, even when Nigeria gets 3 times better than it presently is, you will still find Nigerians trying to do business and/or work, live, in other countries of opportunities. Americans look for opportunities everywhere there is, they don't sit at home saying their country is the best. So it's you who should continue to sit on this space as Nigeria remains resilient through difficult economic climates and thereafter, continues to evolve. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Lol I'm not gonna mention that other nigga since doing so would be too childish. Like, I could easily get 1001 pictures of Kenyans living in abject poverty too but that's not my thing. Just stating here and re-emphasizing it, Nigeria is in one truly undeserved situation considering where we are coming from and wasted resources of many years, but with all these, it should NEVER be compared to Kenya. On the African continent, Nigeria not only has the political clout, it has the economic and financial posture as well as the soft power. So Kenya and Kenyans need to rest 1 Like |

When I look at Nigeria, I see potential. I whisper "It looks decent, but it's not quite there yet." Message to Kenyans Us Kenyans shouldn't condescendingly look down on Nigeria. As hopeless as the country seems, I see a microscopic glimmer of light (albeit I am increasingly losing that glimmer of light gradually.) Additionally, surpassing Nigeria shouldn't be an excuse for us to procrastinate. Remember they look to us as a father figure. |

forgiveness:Nice, like the detailed reply but lemme differ here and there LADOL is an industrial free zone where MNCs dealing in West African oil and gas set up operations to enjoy tax free benefits, the same way athi river is an industrial zone in Nairobi for MNCs dealing in manufacturing. So why you comparing an MNC with an industrial zone Then GZI reached its max capacity of 1.2bn cans in 2012, sounds like a whole lot. At 14.5g for each can, that's an output of about 17,400 tonnes. If you compare that with safal's Mabati (steel and aluminium) rolling mills plant in athi that had an output of 250,000 tonnes in 2012,thats very little. Keep in mind that safal has 35 plants across Africa and Asia! GZI is planning it's first plant in south Africa while SAFAL has 2 plants there already and is planning another. No contest Your banking is bigger than Kenya's, that I agree, knew you'd dwell there for long...but I got respect for your big banks, though ours are expanding much faster. Waiting for more |

Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by shizzy7(f): 8:26pm On Nov 30, 2016 |
MPSA:Makoko is a slum situated on the Lagos Lagoon, its residents are majorly involved in fishing, its their major source of living. So many times, the government has demolished, given notice of eviction even offered alternative location but they refused, most of its residents are from neighboring west African countries and they've adopted the place to be their own. I hope our government finds an alternate solution to restructuring Makoko. Hey, I told you we were going to whoop your ass... but banana girls tried sha.
