Sasuwa: I'm a graduate of Animal and Environmental Biology School: UNIBEN Waiting for NYSC posting too. Well I'm fortunate to be selected by a Dr. at the moment as a research assistant. Since I've graduated (July, 2016), I've only spent a week with my parents in Lagos. What gave me a little advantage over my peers is that I've narrowed down my research interests into two or more branches of researches viz. Insect Ecology, Insect toxicology, invasion biology and pest control. In addition, I developed my research skills to a little extent by reading lots of scientific journals. Kindly send me a pm if you need more information. Warm regards. 5 Likes |

I have HND in Physics/Electronics, strong passion for lecturing job and for financial reasons, i've not been able to further my study in order to get the qualification for the job. Currently, I'm beliving God for an open position for a laboratory technologist in any of the university or polytechnic from which I would be able to get enough funding for my academic journey. I pray God would help me. And, I want to ask, instead of going for PGD (2years) is it not better to just take direct entry (DE) to the University and obtain Bsc and If i am to take DE with my HND, what level will i be admitted in the university (i guess its 300 level)? |

Ragnorak:You're on the wrong bro, Graduate Assistant position is normally for people who have not acquired their master's degree, hence some schools absorb first class and good second class upper graduates immediately after their graduation. If you already have a master's degree, the position you will be looking for is Assistant Lecturer. 4 Likes |

Many Nigerian lecturers in Nigerian tertiary institutions are not qualified to teach students. A qualified lecturer must be certified to teach. Majority of these lecturers are not certified. 1 Like |
Re: Thread For Aspiring Lecturers by tobiasbeecher: 9:39am On Dec 02, 2016 |
moffymichael:yes, it is better to for your DE because since your first qualification is HND, you will not be absorbed into the university system as a lecturer even if you acquire your master's degree. Gone are the days when some polytechnic graduates find themselves in the university as lecturers. It is nearly impossible now! You can only lecture in the polytechnics with your HND. So I advise you go for your DE. Most schools will admit u into 200L with your HND. |

My 2 cents will be people who have the chance (via Class of Degree or money-wise) should try going abroad for Masters and other post graduate studies. There is an amount of exposure and ideology-shift one gets, especially if you go to the right school. Because sometimes, to improve the system requires thinking outside the box and being stuck in the usual naija cycle of academics MAY not be the best option. Nonetheless, many of the lecturers that taught me in my undergraduate claimed to have gotten one degree or another abroad but their thinking is still the same , at least judging from the way they acted towards their students or treated the act of teaching itself. It is not about coming back to Nigeria with one funny accent. I am currently doing my Masters abroad and though don't intend lecturing, it surprises me how someone will spend two years where I am and still think in the same way for Christ's sake: that teaching your students is doing them a favour whereas they paid school fees for crying out loud! That you must just write a research paper to quicken promotion whereas it advances nothing in your field of study! That your title (PhD / Prof) is more important than acquiring knowledge itself and effectively communicating it to students! That putting unnecessary fear in your students equals true respect (dear, ask what they say behind your back )! If some future lecturers are in this thread, please, if you are not ready to stand out for a positive difference (because Nigerian education is at the verge of collapse if you don't know), just pray and work hard for an office job than destroy the innocent lives that may be committed to your hands. Thank you. 7 Likes |

Orikinla:Bro, forget the issue of certification to teach now. They should even be qualified sef just as human beings with true passion to communicate knowledge effectively and advance research on their field of study (and not because of trying to quicken promotion) is just enough. Let's focus on what matters please. 1 Like |
