I'm a graduate of Animal and Environmental Biology

School: UNIBEN

Waiting for NYSC posting too.

Well I'm fortunate to be selected by a Dr. at the moment as a research assistant.

Since I've graduated (July, 2016), I've only spent a week with my parents in Lagos.

What gave me a little advantage over my peers is that I've narrowed down my research interests into two or more branches of researches viz. Insect Ecology, Insect toxicology, invasion biology and pest control.

In addition, I developed my research skills to a little extent by reading lots of scientific journals.

Kindly send me a pm if you need more information.

Warm regards.

You did all these while in School? That's cool. I'm in UNIBEN as well and I'm thinking likewise.

An aspiring "lecturer" who can't write a sentence! Wow!

I pity those you intend "lecturing" in future! They'll end up being you.

OP the first step is to identify an area you want to specialise in. First degree is about breath while 2nd and 3rd degrees is about depth and specialisation.

Since you read physics you have a number of options viz Solid State Physics, Electrophysics, Biophysics, Semiconductor Electronics, Industrial Physics, ICT, Communications etc. After this go for you Masters and on completion of your masters pursue your Ph.D programme.

I wrote my Msc final exams yesterday...

Wanna ask, if someone writes an article or do research, are there journals one can publish such in Nigeria? Just like Havard Business Review

There are thousands, if not millions, of Journals that publish articles in Nigeria. Some charge fees, others dont.

Goto ajol.info or academix.ng to see some. Others are University faculty based so you have to make enquiries from the faculty in the university journal you want to publish with.

Greetings! We share the same vision. I just finished my exams, waiting to be called up too. 'have seen a couple of suggestions here on how you can achieve ur vision... They are all wonderful and supportive. But also consider this, my mentor (an associate professor in Unical) encourages me to write painstaking papers and publish them in both domestic and international journals. The truth is, in the process of doing this, you will identify ur area of interest, conduct researches and further (MSc & Ph.D) in the same confines. Consequently, before wrapping up ur Msc, you could boast of 10 papers; before rounding up ur Ph.D, you may worth 20 papers. This will enhance ur worth and ur potentials overtime. You may worry about paucity of funds but that notwithstanding, you could apply for grants or (like me) partner with ur lecturers whom after perusing ur work may have no other option but to co-author (and pay the publication fee)... Your obsession for books will help others if you identify gaps and fill them through writing and publication of articles. Its working for me already and i'm never gonna relent. If you follow this path, you are definitely a researcher in the making. Nigeria has enough lecturers. We need researchers now.

Following....looking to be an economics professor, ceteris paribus, Deo volente.

However, I'm still an undergraduate at one of Nigeria's premier universities. To be honest and not that I'm trying to put down my lecturers, but some of them are not too sound and lack depth in key economic concepts. Of course I'm not stupid enough to voice it out publicly for fear of reprisal via biased marking of my scripts against my favor but this is our sad reality at the moment.

I would appreciate advice from anyone, especially someone in a similar field of study , on the pitfalls to avoid and one can go on to be a lecturer. Imparting knowledge like the o.p has been a passion of mine and I am convinced that education in Nigeria needs to be revolutionized, a complete overhaul of the system, similar to what obtains in Nordic countries like Finland.

That's it, advice and constructive criticism is very much appreciated.

Please before you enter class room to lecture, make sure you have practiced what you studied for at least 2years. we need to close the gap between theories and practicals. we need to stop producing half baked graduates.
Anybody who has not practiced for a minimum two years should not be allowed to lecture. that's my take.
As long as the flawed recruitment process for young lecturers in many tertiary institutions in Nigeria (who you know vs what you know) continues the way it is, half baked graduates will continue to be rolled out. For the idealistic hardworking young people who desire an academic career, sadly many of you will be hugely disappointed if and when you get employed in an average Nigerian institution.

What!? Perhaps, you could be worse a lecturer if you dare pick up that career because of your outright show of insolence!

You know what? I am a teenager currently applying for admission into higher institution. I'd love to be a lecturer too. My peers ask me to go and read Music because I love it (though I am a science student) but I'm afraid of another career in Music should I be unfortunate to miss my goal of being an academic. Now,I'm opting for Optometry in UNIBEN.

Please do you think I'm getting it right?

Never relent to Write papers. give it out to intellectuals to make useful critics and comments on it... Carry out researches..... don't ever think of victimising students, be humble, friendly, rigid, be smart enough, Polish your grammar, be prayerful and the sky is your limit.

I was just examined externally last week. As I await Senate approval of my result, by God's grace I see myself as a Master of Science Degree Holder. B.Sc, M.Sc... Ph.D in view.

Thank you Lord.

You have said it all. To become good lecturers,we must aspire to make ourselves better...

You're on the wrong bro, Graduate Assistant position is normally for people who have not acquired their master's degree, hence some schools absorb first class and good second class upper graduates immediately after their graduation. If you already have a master's degree, the position you will be looking for is Assistant Lecturer.

You're also right and I'm not wrong either. You can be a GA without a postgrad degree but in the process of acquiring one. Most of those first class students that are absorbed are advised to immediately enrol for MSc, usually in the same school or elsewhere.

Yes you will be advised to go for your Master's degree if you're absorbed as a graduate Assistant. What I'm saying is that if you already have a master's degree, GA position is not for you. No school will take you as a GA if you already have your master's degree.

Oh! It's a good thing to learn and impact knowledge. Lecturing is good and individual lecturers possess different personalities. But we can't generalize things that all lecturers are good or otherwise. And being a lecturer does not make you wild, except if your personality is wild, "devilish". So my dear fellows, let's be the change we wish to see in our society!

Wow, glad to see a lot of people that share my dream....
I see all of us in a few years by God's grace with sparkling qualifications, imparting knowledge the proper way and changing the negative way lecturers are seen. That's what drives ny desire to be a lecturer.

Hopefully that would be soon as I'm concluding my MSc coursework

The best comment I have read so far. Many of our courses are esoteric in nature. Many lecturers do not know jack about what they teach, apart from what they have read in the books. This is especially the case in the Management Sciences. Imagine an Accounting lecturer who has never worked in any accounting role in the industry or a Marketing lecturer who has never worked in Sales, Product Development, Marketing Communications or Marketing Research! It is so pathetic! God willing, I see in myself a seasoned academic in the nearest future, one who can bridge the gap between theory and practice. Marketing rocks!
