Nice from Chisom... One of the shining lights among our home-based Super Eagles stars... The famed "CANE" only had Clement Bobby, Aguda Godwin and Egbuchulam Chisom. The "N", Nwobodo Obinna didn't feature. ........................................................................ Egbuchulam's brace lift Rangers past Rivers Utd Chisom Egbuchulam's sumptuous second half strikes handed Rangers a 2-0 win over Rivers United in the second game of the NPFL Super4 tournament in Enugu on Wednesday. The striker, fresh from winning Nigerian Sports Awards Player of the Year, put the Flying Antelopes ahead in the 64th minute before getting his brace ten minutes afterward. Markson Ojobo missed a penalty before substitute Chiamaka Madu would see a late effort crash off the woodwork. The last time both sides met, it served up one of the most one-sided fixtures of Rangers' title- winning season. But anyone expecting another 4-0 bashing quickly diminished such thoughts as Rivers United bossed the opening minutes with Bernard Ovoke and Guy Kuemian keeping the new-look centre-back pairing of captain for the evening, Chibuzor Madu and Senegalese Ousmane Pape Sane on their toes. In midfield, Rangers who were missing the craft of former Nigerian Under-20 star Obinna Nwobodo did struggle to keep possession early in the game and early attacking attempts were quickly snuffed out by vigilant and combatant trio of Gabriel Olalekan, Festus Austine and new-signing, Aliassou Sannou. Rangers would eventually wait till the 29th minute before their first meaningful attempt on Sunday Rotimi's goal. That chance had sprung out from Tope Olusesi's brilliant cutback for the unmarked Egbuchulam but the striker failed to beat the ageless Rotimi from six yards. Earlier, Ovoke had sent a freekick narrowly wide of Nana Bonsu's goal. The Ghanaian had also thwarted Esosa Igbinoba's effort in those early minutes of dominance by the Rivers side. Rangers looked better after the interval and the introduction of Charles Henlong offered the league defending champions more of the ball in midfield. What the game lacked was just a goal and Ovoke nearly provided it when he ghosted into the Rangers area but sent the ball flying over the crossbar. It would be his last contribution as Bolaji Sakin replaced him minutes afterward. Kuemian would see his goal-bound strike blocked before Egbuchulam announced himself. Quick exchanges with Godwin Aguda in the Rivers United area set up Egbuchulam who unleashed an unstoppable strike that broke the deadlock. If the first was superb, the second was an absolute belter. United sought to respond and got a lifeline when Bolaji Sakin won a penalty in the 76th minute. But Nana Bonsu was keen on preserving his clean sheet, superbly stopping Ojobo's effort from the spot. Rangers nearly got their third when substitute Chiamaka Madu sold a dummy past his marker but with Rotimi beaten, the ball hit the woodwork. Bonsu at the other end denied United as they sought a consolation. Superior finishing by a player of top quality had made all the difference between the two continental candidates. Why Tosin Adarabioyo And Other Man City Stars Call Iheanacho “Uncle” On September 13 2015 after Kelechi Iheanacho scored a last minute winning goal for Manchester City against Crystal Palace in an English Premier League game, Social media went overboard when Sterling called the 19 year old “Uncle” in a tweet congratulating him for his goal that gifted them all three points on twitter. The tweets lead to a whole lot of insinuations which some even saying the tweet brings to question the real age of the Nigerian for Sterling who is older than him to refer to him as uncle. Same debate was reignited when Anglo Nigerian Tosin Adarabioyo referred to the 20 year old as “Uncle”once again, after smashing his record as Manchester City youngest debutant in the UEFA Champions League. However in our traditional way of unraveling the mystery behind most stories owngoalnigeria.com can authoritatively reveal that the tweet had nothing to do with his age rather it’s the nickname most of the senior players call the Nigerian who refers to most of them as “uncle” in training. The word uncle is mostly used in Nigeria to refer to someone who is older during conversation and not necessarily what it means in the real sense and Iheanacho use the word very well in most of his chats with the senior players who in turn jokingly refer to him as uncle once in a while. Sterling’s tweet was more of the same joke from the training pitch whenever the Nigerian is talked about by senior players of the team and nothing close to all that have been speculated. owngoalnigeria.com/2016/12/08/why-tosin-adarabioyo-and-other-man-city-stars-call-iheanacho-uncle/ 1 Like |

The Nickname Super Eagles Players Call The Tight Bond Between Iwobi & Iheanacho The closeness of Nigerian national team duo of Arsenal Alex Iwobi and Manchester City Kelechi Iheanacho has earned them a nickname from their national team colleagues. Even coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has advised other players in the team to emulate the friendship of the duo on and off the pitch, as qualification for World Cup 2018 in Russia hots up. Iwobi and Iheanacho are usually roommates in the Nigerian national team, with Iwobi citing the jovial and funny nature of the Manchester City star as one of the reason why he is his favourite roommate. Shortly after the duo found the back of the net for their respective teams in the UEFA Champions League, the media officer of the Nigeria national team Toyin Ibitoye took to twitter to reveal the nickname the duo are called by their teammates. ”Roommates in @NGSuperEagles camp, called “Tom and Jerry’ for their ‘playful’ nature but @67Kelechi (Iheanacho) and @Alexiwobi do score goals,” Ibitoye posted on his twitter handle. owngoalnigeria.com/2016/12/08/the-nickname-super-eagles-players-call-the-tight-bond-between-iwobi-iheanacho/ 1 Like |

Troost-Ekong Can’t Wait For January Transfer Window, Joins Gent Europa League Travelling Party Belgian side Gent have have started the process of integrating Super Eagles centre back William Troost-Ekong into their main team. Ekong is back at the Belgian side after spending time on loan in Norway with FK Haugesund, and has been heavily involved in the training regime of the club in preparation for his debut. The Nigerian who could yet leave on loan in January is eager to learn his fate in the team as there are doubts if he could displace one of the settled back three of the Belgian side. However it appears like he could stay at the club judging by his inclusion in the Europa league travelling party to Turkey, even though he is not eligible to play for Gent yet. ”Last training done, boys ready for tomorrow. Cameroon Coach Hoping To Lure Liverpool Star To National Team Ahead Of WCQ Against Nigeria Cameroon coach Hugo Broos is hoping to lure Liverpool defender Joel Matip to return to the Indomitable Lions ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria in 2017. Born in Bochum to a German mother and a Cameroonian father, Matip has complained about the disorganization in the Cameroon setup and has not featured for the team since 2015, few months after the dismal outing in Brazil 2014. Belgian tactician Broos is not satisfied with the performance of the central defenders after two games in World Cup qualifying, with the Lions conceding in both matches, and has turned his attention to The Reds star. “When I took over as coach I went to see him in Gelsenkirchen and ask him to return to the team,” Broos said to Voetbal Magazine. “But he said to me ‘nothing is organised properly in Cameroon’. “I asked him to give me a chance to prove that we could do it better but he was not convinced. “But in the meantime I’ve heard that he is now prepared to make a comeback and so I am going to go and see him again.” Matip scored Cameroon’s only goal at the 2014 World Cup in a 4-1 defeat to Brazil at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, Brasília. Kelechi Iheanacho – 7.5 Kelechi put in a good performance, highlighted by his superb finish in the 8th minute. One thing which worries many City fans is the Nigerian’s link-up play, but those worries were put to bed today, as Kelechi did a good job of linking midfield and attack. http://www.mcfcwatch.com/2016/12/06/manchester-city-1-1-celtic-player-ratings/ Did anyone spot learning and improving without Game Time? You can deduce that Guardiola is working on Iheanacho's link up play and he showed improvement. |

Rohr, Yusuf Combination Working Well For Super Eagles - Shorunmu By Augustine Akhilomen Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu has lauded the technical efficiency of the duo of Gernot Rohr and Salisu Yusuf as a perfect combination that has helped propelled the senior national team to the top of group B 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Rohr was appointed technical adviser of the Super Eagles while Yusuf was named as the Chief coach of the team by the Nigeria Football Federation, of which both of them have worked collectively without any form of disagreement. They have been able to maintain a balanced team that has remain unbeaten in a group that consist 'almighty' Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia. Nigeria defeated Zambia 2-1 in Ndola before overcoming the Desert Foxes of Algeria 3-1 in Uyo to move top of group B. However, Shorunmu who was a member of the team that won Silver in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations and also featured at the 2002 World Cup, told Soccernet.com.ng that the technical crew of Gernot Rohr and Salisu Yusuf have brought a new lease of life for the Super Eagles. "I am particularly happy with the progress of Super Eagles Technical adviser, Gernot Rohr and Salisu Yusuf as far as qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is concerned," Shorunmu told Soccernet.com.ng. "The bond between them have created a peaceful and understanding atmosphere amongst the players in the Super Eagles. They have exhibited some senses of maturity in tackling certain issues that could have caused division in the team. "I sincerely love their combination and I believe they will qualify Nigeria to the World Cup in Russia having beaten teams like Algeria and Zambia in the group." he said. www.soccernet.com.ng/2016/12/rohr-yusuf-combination-working-well-for.html 1 Like |

Infantino backs 48-team World Cup with 16 groups FIFA president Gianni Infantino wants to expand the World Cup finals to 48 teams featuring 16 groups of three starting with the 2026 tournament, a source within world football’s governing body told AFP on Wednesday. Infantino, who had until now proposed a 48-team event but with a traditional 32 countries advancing to the finals, will submit his latest proposal at a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich on January 9-10. A letter outlining the new format was due to be sent to the members of the FIFA Council on Wednesday, the source said, adding that the format was “preferred by president Infantino.” Under the new format, the source said, “every qualified team would play at least two group matches. The top two in each group would then go through to the last 32.” The FIFA Council will vote on several proposals at their January meeting: whether to maintain the current World Cup format of 32 teams, extend it to 40 teams or go to 48 teams. In the latter case they will vote on whether to have an initial play-off before 32 teams go into a group stage, or whether to go with Infantino’s now preferred option. The successor to the disgraced Sepp Blatter had previously floated the idea of having 32 teams going into a play-off round, with the 16 winners joining another 16 sides in the group stage. The play-off matches would be staged in the country hosting the finals, but would mean the losers go home after just one game. “This way, every team is guaranteed at least two matches and then we have knockout matches from the last 32,” the source added of the 16-group proposal. “Furthermore, this formula offers two advantages. Each confederation has a guaranteed number of qualified teams and it is easier to understand for spectators, television companies and sponsors.” The source added that this format “seems to be liked” by the different federations. The proposal to change the format of the competition is driven by a desire to increase income from marketing and television rights, even if the costs would also increase with an expanded tournament. Infantino, formerly Michel Platini’s right-hand man at UEFA, said recently he was in favour of a World Cup jointly organised by several countries to share out the burden of providing facilities for the tournament. “We don’t want white elephants,” he said in reference to stadiums that have been built for past World Cups and then left without a purpose after the tournament. “We want facilities that will last.” Infantino was general secretary of UEFA when European football’s governing body expanded the European Championship from 16 teams to 24 for this year’s finals in France. They also approved staging Euro 2020 in 13 different countries around the continent. And the Swiss-Italian has also been looking to expand the FIFA Club World Cup from the current seven-team format to a 32-club competition and hosting it in June instead of December. This year’s competition in Japan begins on Thursday, with Real Madrid the favourites. www.soccernet.com.ng/2016/12/infantino-backs-48-team-world-cup-with.html 1 Like |

Orkpekyandega: I still prefer the 32 team format. However, I dnt believe a 48 team format will reduce the standards as such as there have been so many big footballing nations that still miss WCs even with the 32 Team format. Take Africa for instance if 3 more teams are added be rest assured that they will not be less in strength compared to the 5 teams that will make this next world cup. I dnt jst like that proposed format of 16 groups of 3 teams. With only 1 qualifying. Meaning 66% of the teams would play only 2 matches and crash out. It would also make group qualification more difficult. Like if u are placed in same group with Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the likes just know say na end of road be that. At least if there are 4 teams in the group, if u concede defeat to the top seeded team u try ur chances against the other 2 teams. Which is why I would rather prefer a 12 group format of 4 teams each with top team in each group and 4 best losers making the 2nd round. At least u'll be assured of 3games and if u dnt win the group u would still have a chance of making the 4 best losers spot. 4 Likes |

New Nike deal on the horizon.... But....... ....................................................................... Dalung, Pinnick ignore Falcons, fly to London to sign new Nike deal As the senior national women’s team the Super Falcons continue their sit-in protest in Abuja over unpaid bonuses and allowances after their 10th AWCON triumph in Cameroon, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and the chairman of the League Management Company of Nigeria (LMC), Mallam Shehu Dikko are off to London to sign a new kit sponsorship deal for the Super Eagles with sports wear manufacturing giants, Nike. Dalung and Amaju Pinnick Although the NFF had before the tournament pledged to pay the Falcons bonuses and allowances for qualifying, the team played and won without bonuses and allowances paid. They have since embarked on a protest following their return from Cameroon. One of the players told BBC Sport that their sit-in at the Agura hotel in the capital will not end until they receive all bonuses, which totals US$23,650 (about N11.5m) per player. “We are not leaving this hotel and we have not been told exactly when we are going to get paid,” the player, who insisted on anonymity, told BBC Sport. “The plan is to stay here until we all receive the money because the moment we leave there will be no opportunity to get it again.” Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/dalung-pinnick-ignore-falcons-fly-london-sign-new-nike-deal/ 1 Like |

Cameroon woo Matip for Eagles Joel Matip Cameroon coach Hugo Broos is pulling out all the stops to ensure Nigeria falls to the Indomitable Lions when the two teams clash next August as the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers resume. Nigeria sit pretty at the summit of group B of the qualifiers with six points from two games while Cameroon are second with two points from the same number of matches. The Super Eagles will host the Indomitable Lions in the next group game and Cameroon coach Broos wants to close the gap between the two sides. He has sent emissaries to England to help persuade Joel Matip to reconsider his retirement from the national side. The former Schalke 04 defender, who now plays for Liverpool in the Premier League, quit the Cameroon set up in 2015 amidst controversies but Broos hopes the defender can change his mind in time for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and subsequently the World Cup qualifiers. Matip is a very experienced defender who was part of the Cameroon squad for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, and if he changes his mind, he is expected to help out a young Cameroon defensive lineup. The 25-year-old recently returned from injury after missing the 4-3 reversal at Bournemouth over the weekend but is expected to be fit for the EPL clash against West Ham on Sunday. More like The King and The "Crown" Prince ....................................................................... AGUERO GIVES IHEANACHO THE NOD Credit: Getty Images | James Baylis Sergio Aguero told Kelechi Iheanacho to relish the added weight of responsibility and grab the chance to carry Manchester City in his absence. City’s top scorer will miss four Premier League matches – starting at Leicester City on Saturday – after a horror tackle on David Luiz during defeat by Chelsea. The Nigerian netted City’s equalizer in the 1-1 draw with Celtic on Tuesday and revealed Aguero took him to one side to offer some words of wisdom. ‘Before we played Celtic [he said] that it’s up to me now to fill that gap, to carry the team along,’ Iheanacho said. ‘He’s telling me I should do very well and they are words of encouragement from him. So I’m going to do it.’ ‘It’s a big opportunity for me now. Sergio’s not around so I have to take responsibility. I need to work really hard to prove myself to the team. ‘I need to do extra to help the team to carry them along and to get the points that we need now.’ Iheanacho is likely to be handed a first league start since the middle of October this weekend and admitted the application demanded of City’s stars has increased drastically under Guardiola. ‘Pep is a great manager, everyone knows that. In training he needs you at 100 per cent, to get focused and do the right things,’ the 20-year-old added. ‘You need to follow the instructions and play as instructed with the intensity. ‘You need to do more. You need to press high, help your team-mates back and covering. And of course score goals. ‘We have lots of quality players so you need to keep up. Everyone is doing great and bringing their best. You need to be on the same level, be at your best and help win the things that we need.’ Source: http://footballlive.ng/footballnews/9ja-news/aguero-gives-iheanacho-the-nod/ 1 Like |

Ukrainian-Based Striker Eyes Reunion With City Talent Iheanacho In Super Eagles Zorya Luhansk striker Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure is targeting a call-up to the Super Eagles in the new year. The player’s intermediary, Leonard Maduabum, who is based in Ukraine, advised Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to monitor the progress of the former Nigeria U15 international. He believes Bonaventure can strike a good understanding in the Super Eagles attack playing alongside other young players like Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi. “Any player that can survive the Ukrainian League can make it in the national team, ” Leonard said. “Already he has played alongside Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi and the likes of them, so I see him getting on well in the Super Eagles if given the chance.” Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure is in line to face Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday having recovered from injury, but it is assumed he will start from the bench if he is included in Zorya Luhansk’s 18-man squad. SCOUTING REPORT: ARSENAL FAN ONYEKURU TIPPED FOR LONDON GUNNERS Onyekuru A special scouting report compiled by renowned scouting agency Instat has tipped Nigeria forward Henry Onyekuru to go all the way to play for his dream club Arsenal. The 19-year-old Onyekuru and Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi have been picked by Instat among the biggest talents in Belgium for the current season. The Nigerian forward, a left-sided midfielder whose stronger foot is his right foot, has scored seven goals for Eupen in their first season in the Belgian top flight. The full Instat Scouting Report on Onyekuru - Onyekuru was invited to Aspire Academy while he played for a small club (it was Josep Colomer, the current Eupen sports director, who found the player). His gradual progress allowed him to move to Belgium where he became one of the top young players in Jupiler Pro League during the following season. Henry supports the Gunners and Thierry Henry is his favorite player so it is quite easy to notice his similar playing manner. He is a left inside that pierces the opponent’s defense with his smartness and off the ball play. Henry displays extraordinary dynamics as he exchanges short passes with his teammates. After he sends the ball, he immediately starts improving his position to receive a return pass. He is not afraid of taking the initiative (3 successful dribbles per match). Onyekuru turns around, leaves his position, uses fake moves, knocks the ball forward and runs by his opponents. His final passes are not quite good though. The player is effective when playing on the same line with the defenders and taking part in the second chance attacks from the depth. He finds the best moment for acceleration and gets into a shooting position (2 per match) as he takes quick decisions and poses threat at any distance. If Henry cuts down the number of mistakes made in ball control, he will be able to cause greater troubles for the opponent’s goal. After he loses the ball, he keeps on playing and tries to get it back. He can develop in defensive actions due to better positioning. Onyekuru says his tactical knowledge needs improvement and praises his head coach as he gives excellent instructions. This player has terrific physique (high pace and strong instincts) together with unusual technique and solid shot. So Henry will get a chance to join his favourite club if he continues to improve his advantages as he did before.
