Shekstatari:
We entered the Hallowed Hallway that marked the entry to the sanction of every naive 200level student-the Dissection Hall, only to have our olfaction assaulted by the fetid stench of formalin. When one gets accustomed to the putrid smell, if one does at all, the Next Humungous task is keeping his/her eyes open and ignoring the intense burning sensation and the watering redness as the formalin vapours begin taking over.
.
We the approached the cadavers, expecting them to be covered in a sheet, expecting the teachers to prepare us for what was to come.
Instead, it was all mechanical, with the assistant lecturers treating it as a mundane task. Our cadaver was dark, rigid and stark naked. His skin was peeling off in several places, there were distinct signs of manual labour on his blistered palms. He was reed thin.
.
But the most startling observation was that half his face was missing. I looked around at the other tables each body had half a face.
I don't think anybody talked for several minutes. I thought somebody was bound to throw up or feel nauseous. But many just gazed about awkwardly.
.
Something unavoidable, was going beyond the somatic shroud of our cadaver and imaginning how life must have treated him before he was unfortunate enough to land before us, for we were to treat him as nothing more than a body, a tool to organize the mental chaos doled out in theory lectures.
.
Then the Lecturer spoke up: and we made an incision below the platysma to begin dissecting the upper extremity.
That was all..........
Our cadaver's once-intact body now lies in the form of various organs and appendages stored in buckets of water and formalin

you've said it all bro! dats exactly wat we saw during our initial dissection!

Med school gradually kicking in, so is the fear but the motivation from men before me here is helping with God helping me I will scale through.

Saw my first cadaver in person during intro to anatomy lab.... I can't unsee what i saw, but in that moment I felt inspired and whispered quietly to the cadaver, " thank you for your service" especially remembering where we have come from. From the grave robberies to the illegal dissections, to the freedom to learn from them.

I guess its still rookie motivation but that's how I feel.

If you like, study medicine in Abu zaria, delsu or even the best medical school in Nigeria which is University of Ibadan (the statement is objective), medicine is medicine.

What I have observed as a medical student about medicine is that the best medical students most time aren't the best doctors.

The best doctors are mostly those who are compassionate and who tend to observe certain things in their environment(like someone that has a sixth sense, you know what I mean)

If you don't have those qualities, I am sorry to say that you might end up leaving the medical profession or not practicing at all because if you do, you might end up been frustrated.

If you think that because you are brilliant, that's why you must study medicine, then I will tell you that, you are in a wrong field.

Well said... Medicine is Medicine as far the school is accredited by NUC and MDCN. At times those in schools less quota tend to suffer much due to the fact that they are not many and the need to maintain the accreditation.

For now,you can only transfer to pharmacy but the implication is that you'll lose one year. And then, make sure you avoid carryovers prior to period of transfer and allot atleast 50k for it..schools of medicine and dentistry including law don't accept transfers in Uniben.

Please medical doctors and medical students in the house help!!! I got admitted to a university to Study medicine. The name of the university is Bingham university (private uni) the quota they have for graduating doctors is just 50 yet they admit about 300 medical students 100level. We pay 1.1million naira as school fees not knowing what awaits us they give us a condition that before we get promoted to 200 level we have to keep a GPA of minimum of 4.5 and with out any carry over in any course and we are doing 15 courses. They are even complaining of them promoting about 150 medical students last year with a cut off of 4.0 GPA. Please is this how it is in other medical schools Is this the terms and conditions given or is this pure wickedness.... Hmmmm....I just don't understand

They are simply violating the rules and conditions of the MDCN..The approved quota of 50 is the maximum number of students the school ought to admit not the number expected to graduate..Nigerian medical schools are fond of this illicit act simply because of the money and nepotism..My candid advice:since you're already in the mess, make sure you've have the minimum requirement needed to move to the next level. Goodluck!
