I don't know where you are tho buy if it happens that you are in Lagos. I attended a wedding like that at ikoyi registry there's a small restaurant there that you can rent even 5hours is too much u can do everything under 2 or 3hrs max.

Court marriage is a statutory marriage. Refreshments is not part of it. It can be a private affair
Re: What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Court Marriage by teetee123: 7:09pm On Dec 11, 2016
ariesbull:

all u need is witness but your parents must consent

Please stop giving wrong information. i married over 10 years ago there was no parent consent, unless the law has changed. What is required on the marriage registry form is the details about the couple's parents- name, age, address, occupation etc.
Marriage is expected to be between 2 consenting adults not babies why presence or consent of parents.

Registry is not church, nikai or customary marriage which require family involvement. All you need at the registry is just 2 witnesses , therefore only 4 people could be at the wedding.

At OP,

I like your style. After the wedding comes the marriage: the daily life. Far more important.
Court marriage is probably better. You get your legal documents. Better when processing documents like visa and such. The world is shrinking.

If in a big city, do the registry bit and go to a cheaper part of town for a small reception. Like a nice restaurant.
Done and dusted. 5 hours is too much sef.

By the way common law and customary law marriages are legal too. When dowry and or other local custom has been followed and both families have agreed, it is valid.

The family court will consider such marriages as valid. Only that one party can claim that the marriage did not take place properly since no legal documents to prove it.

Very very possible, any mature individual can stand for you as witness. But still parents blessings are important
ok. But who will collect her bride price and is it like i will just drop any amount as bride price? Will there be need for me to get other lists as demanded by her tradition?

Lastly the traditional marriage, since nobody wants her to be with you, will u guys still perform traditional marriage ceremony?

Marriage without dissolution of the first marriage is an offense - bigamy. Let the man approach the court to dissolve even in the absence of the woman. The law allows such dissolution after certain no of months.

We are thinking of going for a court marriage (registry). Please tell me the advantages and disadvantages from the male and female point of view.
Also, can I achieve these things listed below with a court wedding?

# I don't like too much crowd and noise which are common with owanbe's

# Can a little reception be allowed to hold in the court premises without prohibition?

# low Kew wedding in which after the ceremony, everyone goes back to their respective homes

# At most 15 or less number of guests. I don't want too much crowd and paparazzi

# A budget of 150k probably for snacks, cake, food and drinks.

# Time : I don't think it should take more than 5 hours and all will be over.

I brought this to the family section as I believe there are more mature minds here compared to the romance section.
Lalasticlala and farano can help move to front page so that perspectives can be broadened.

My regret is that I didn't have the idea of doing the court marriage and an indoor trado.I went the whole hog of the tripartite arrangement. Henceforth ,I'll advise couples to do only the trado and the registry. It's OK that way

@op, even the 150k is too much.

You probably are not going to buy more than 2-packs of canned malt drink... Go marina, count buns at cheap price, you can mix it with small cakes. 3packs of bottled water... If you like you pay for bigger cake to take pictures with...

With this you are done.

Go home and have enough sex and fun...

# Stop saying Court marriage as no one is going to court here grin grin
#you only need one witness each any other person is a guest
#the compulsory money you need to spend is that to pay for the registry and the photographer any other money is pocket specific wink wink
#You only need time to exchange vows and sign the register plus perform the ceremony of exchanging rings, any other time spent is up to you.
#Reception in court premises ,Again No one is going to court, you are going to you local government council registry. Some might have venues for reception which they might charge you separate or inclusive of the initial cost to marry there.
#HAPPY WEDDING wink wink wink wink

Traditional marriage is up to both of you, teh only Marriage recognized by a state is the one you both sign a register in front of a registrar in a LGA Registry.

People should say what they know and stop musleading or discouraging others.
So long as you are 18years and above, no parental consent is required. All that's required is two witnesses, one for yourself and one for your wife to be whom can be anybody including your friend. And as many other witnesses who will not sign as your budget can carry. Two passports each of you are required to publish your intention to be married, after 21 days and noone come around to give reason why both of you should not be married as husband and wife which few of the ground it can affect the union is if one party is still legally married as of the time of the of contracting the new one or having an undisclosed health challenge which the Petitioner thinks might affect the other party etc

The price is for Court Registry Marriage is between 10-30k depending on the Court Registry. As for your 20 guests, if you take them to a fast food joint for reception after the brief marital vow where a plate of food is #2500, 50k will take care of that. It must be on a working day Monday - Friday. Saturday and Sunday are out of it.

Legally both party are protected equally, but upon separation or divorce, property are to be shared according to each others contributions to itself emergence. Even when one party did not, a consideration is given to him/her for providing the peaceful atmosphere or psychology for its emergence. This is only applicable if one party appeal for them. Some might say they are not interested in most cases depending on what leads to the divorce. And the ground for divorce include - adultery, threat to life, undisclosed serious health challenge etc which are also probable ground for divorce in a church wedding.

Most Church issued Married Certificate is not acceptable in most Embassies unlike Registry Certificate that's acceptable everywhere.

The choice is yours. The most important thing is to study your wife character and attitude well and make sure she is a good person. If your wife is the type whose only interest is your property church wedding /traditional wedding might be a better option.

I am confused about the difference between local government registry and court weddings. Is it not the same thing? I want the legal experts to clarify this.
Please get your facts right before we end up miss informing people. I got married over a decade ago in a church but got a local government registry certificate not even the church certificate because we registered the marriage at the LGA and the certificate was released to the Pastor and we signed it during the wedding.
My wife and I have used this certificate to travel round the world and for our permanent residency in another country. 2 of my family members got their EU papers with LGA marriage certificates. There was no need for parental consent when we filled the forms.
I have legal consultations before my wedding and there was nothing like court wedding but LGA registry wedding. I have never met anyone who had court wedding. I know court only dissolves marriage after irreconciable differences between the couple but not to wed.

#The registry are opened on Saturday as a matter of fact majority of them Do Saturdays
#church certificate is not Legally binding anywhere the laws of marriage are enforced.
