Grow up sunny boy.
Alimony is also enforceable in church marriages gone sour. So if any man who married through the church should divorce his wife and leave her with lets say 3 kids, do you think the church will just tell you go your way good man, let your ex wife only take care of all the kids?

What makes marriage fail is not Tradition, church neither is it Registry wedding (what most people ignorantly call Court Wedding) but the people involved and how able they were in managing the circumstances leading up to divorce. They are men /women whom have seen 10 times what most divorcees saw and went their separate ways but are in still in their marriage and had worked their ways through such trouble waters through perseverence etc . Please note that Church /Tradition /Registry don't make marriage work, people /couple do, they can only help .
Well said.

What is the confusion here.
If had Church, Mosque, Traditional or in Court premises.

All Certificates most come from the Marriage registry.

There are Two (2) types of Marriage Registries in Nigeria

A. Federal Marriage Registries

a) LAGOS – Ikoyi Registry (covers all those resident in Lagos, South-South, South East and South West)
b) ABUJA – Wuse 2 (covers all those resident in the Northern region)

B. All States have various Registries at the State and Local Government level.

@OBAGHADAFI. Thanks for the explanation.

I heard that IkOYI is like a mkt place, I have never been there but that must be packed.
For those of you still getting it twisted,
when you hear the word COURT and Marriage in one sentence, it usually means Marriage is over
But REGISTRY and MARRIAGE Means Marriage has just legally began.

Well most Churches in Nigeria are smarter.

These Churches assist their members to the registry and they issue the Government Certificates right in the Church.

These are big Churches, like Catholic, RCCG, Methodist etc

You are right. I actually did my wedding in church and got a registry certificate right there.

yes that is very correct, I have seen that happen.A good friend of mine got married in one of these Big churches and two weddings where going on same time. The Registrar was in church that day.

That's is the best, cos it saves you from unnecessary stress.

Those claiming they don't want Legalized marriage , should try try approach any foreign embassy without the Legalized marriage certificate. grin

Yes that's how it's done now.

The Church Marriage committee/department handle all the process for you.

Even Traditional Marriages have started adopting the method, after the Traditional ceremony you just approach the registry for your certificate.

cos they chose to, They might not be bothered about getting married, to them lot marriage do not mean a thing.Check teh laws in teh US and the UK, once you have kids and have lived together for xyz numbers of years you have same right as couples who are married
Also you can chose to sign a prenup where both parties value what they have and sign an agreement to go away with such if they do go apart, so as you can see its not a big seal.

prenuptial agreement (redirected from Prenup)
Also found in: Dictionary, Financial, Wikipedia.
prenuptial agreement (antenuptial agreement)
n. a written contract between two people who are about to marry, setting out the terms of possession of assets, treatment of future earnings, control of the property of each, and potential division if the marriage is later dissolved. These agreements are fairly common if either or both parties have substantial assets, children from a prior marriage, potential inheritances, high incomes, or have been "taken" by a prior spouse. (See: antenuptial agreement)

http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Prenup

I hope you realize prenups can and have been overturned on numerous occasions .At the end of the day it isnt "legally binding" but up to the judge whether to adhere to it or throw it under the bus. So you are not totally safe . All the lower earning party needs to do is to claim the pre nup was signed under duress or forcibly and the judge overturns it immediately. Nigeria isn't like this yet but you better hope the judge is incorruptible if you are a billionaire

There is a case in the US where someone is not paying child support cos it was in the prenup.

ALIMONY IS NEVER ENFORCEABLE IN THE CHURCH. The church's power is highly restricted to its members and not just everyone. The church could also play a crucial role in working towards reconciling the estranged couple but does not hold the power to make a decree concerning the marriage or outcome. The best the church can do is to advise. I'll paint a scenario.

A married church goer who attends the same church with his wife suddenly becomes distracted and engages in extra marital affairs which does not move him should his wife know about it. Wifey finds out, cries her eyes out but isn't enough as the man is hell bent on leaving with a younger, more beautiful lady. Best case scenario on the church's part would be a reconciliatory move. Should the man insist on not coming back to his wife and kids he might pull out of the church and the power of the church ends there. At that point, they can only ask the woman to involve their families. The church would become a spectator should the man refuse to cater for his family. There's no way they can enforce alimony in this regard. It won't even fly.

Ikoyi is indeed a market place. You tend to see so many to-be couples waiting to be attended to and you get to see the registrars play God. This is way after they have 'taxed' you unnecessarily. The best thing to do is to have the church work on your behalf by bringing a registrar to the church. This doesn't happen with every Tom, Dick and Harry getting married in the church though. It's mostly exclusive to 'mouthed' folks in the church.

That is a different ball game....traditional marriage is good but it doesn't have legal backing. They don't issue certificate in trado ...,even most penticistal churches certificate isn't valid....you need to go to court to update it.

Its mostly catholic and Anglican with Orthodox churches certificate are recognised....most of these embassies won't recognise these one man church.

As an Igbo man....all you have to does pay bride price and do intro the same day. Just take few umunna

It doesn't cost much ...the main thing is bride price

But validity of marriage is in valid legal certificate

We have Ikeja Oregon Ipaja even marina registries all are valid.

Ikoyi is over hyped... Due to celebrities go there

Just find a quiet registry wed and go in and start making babies. Marriage is valid once it has government back up cert

Just like degree is valid once it has government recognized university

That's African man....do oyibo pay bride price..,,what we are talking is legality of marriage not customary acceptance if marriage. Bride price is good, but it is useless when you don't have any certificate to back it up.

Which one is more important....OK I paid bride price but there is no document to back it up,,,.just like you went to school but no certificate to prove. Are you buhari

2. If none of your parents are around to sign for consent on the marriage. Only the Governor , A high court Judge, or highest ranked registry officer can sign for u.

Which means if u go and marry someone ur parents does not consent to. Is OYO for you oh ! Just go and do fake marriage certificate jeje.

For clarity sake, court/registry marriage are the same. In most countries its even termed as court marriage. Marriage proceedings are usually done in a registry which is affiliated to the law. In case there's a problem which I'll never have by God's grace , you go to the court to sort out the mess. Its right to say registry marriage, its also right to say court marriage. They are connected and together oversee your marriage.

Thanks all for your contributions.

Traditional ( Customary Law Marriage) are legally recognized within Nigeria.

But for proper recognition, you need approach the registry with proof of the Customary Law Marriage.

Note: most Pentecostal Churches are now licenced by the registry to issues marriage certificates.

If she'd be going on a weekday then she wouldn't have any issues. The yanga and unnecessary shakara of the registrars only pop up on weekends. It's one of the reasons I asked her to go on a Thursday. A very good friend got married on Thursday last week, and she told me she had no hitch or whatsoever.

Ikoyi becomes a disaster when it's used on a weekend.

nah COURT MARRIAGE is a word used by those in the *Not to know*spectrum
However there is one country I know of that used that word court marriage INDIA.It is enshrined into their laws but it was meant to legalize those who wish to marry against their parent wishes.
