GreenandGold:are gangsters in SA in their 50s? Cos that's the minimum they would be if they fought in the border war in there early adult life...... The most common thing I know in most countries is that thugs/bank robbers esp the ones who execute the robberies are usually young and very agile and most likely not formally trained..... If they were then they wouldn't be called robbers or thugs, the political implications of only a specific type of thugs (ex guerilla trained from specific countries) conducting high profile heists would have been too big. Local law enforcement and politicians would have probably have a name for them, there would have been a whole propaganda campagn on the 'foreign trained' thugs who are stealing hard earned cash and causing mayhem to citizens.. 2 Likes |

Fidha254: The last batch of MK or SADF or homeland troops were from 1994, 18 in 1994 is only 39 years old. Sadly lots of young men from both sides got left out of the rainbow nation... not much use for gunmen after a "peaceful" revolution, so they turn to crime. Usually high-end, high-risk, sophisticated crime like cash-in-transit heists, bank robberies or ATM bombings 3 Likes

Fidha254: Some are ex police who lost their jobs in some way then turn to crime.... The fact that an R5 rifle is the mist of weapons found tells you plenty. In most of the times, the young criminals would have an older veteran who gives them some kind of training... Cash-in-transits heists are so dangerous you'll need very specialised training to undertake one. |

GreenandGold: Let's not forget ex-military from mainly Zimbabwe and Mozambique who join up with locals, of course. Interestingly, a friend of mine is writing his master's on cash-in-transit heists and has interviewed serving Zim soldiers in prison who hire themselves out as shooters to supplement their meagre salaries. It is a very sophisticated enterprise which has spawned its own economic ecosystem, organised almost along insurgent philosophies with a high degree of compartmentalisation. Rented shooters, rented firearms, separate "cells" supplying target intel, cells for safe houses, explosives from the mines, vehicles etc. Hell, the more sophisticated syndicates even use signal jammers. 3 Likes |

frumentius: I wanted to add the Zimbabweans but dedicated to be mild in my statement. I personally know stories of Zimbabweans ex-military using multichannel Chinese frequency jammers in South African heists... At some point the Hawks had to intervene with intelligence to try to allocate the supplier(s). 2 Likes |

patches689: I was thinking exactly the same thing! If SANDF PR & Communications were any good, the after-action reports would've transpired in "Battle of Bangui" at a bookshop and cinema near you! Then again, the one lousy experience with media embeds (Lesotho) and someone decided never again. Never mind that one of the recommendations was that in principle it was a good thing, but lack of proper prep meant abysmal implementation. Since then, the US, UK, France etc all provide embed templates which we've studied and not followed-through. 1 Like |

patches689: A week before, the same Takkies unit took down similar gang down the coast in Port Shepstone. One line from the official report: "after the suspects vehicle came to a standstill, they found all 5 suspects deceased." Ah, the understatement of quiet professionals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzXfuRY16WM

patches689: The Carte Blanche thing came about because an enlightened commander - Gen Mgwebi, the "fighting general" - approved it in his position as MONUSCO Force Commander. Prior to that, as CJOPS he approved the trips and reports on CAR and FIB ops in DRC by the Sunday Times team of Hofstatter and Oatway. And because retirement age beckons, to this lowly planner he remains the best CSANDF we never had, thanks to politics. I'm curious: have we ever had a qualified SF operator rise so high up the ranks? 2 Likes
