Obinna Nwobodo set to return for Rangers after injury

Obinna Nwobodo of Rangers

Obinna Nwobodo has said he hopes to soon return to action after he was injured in a pre-season game for Enugu Rangers.

The injury against Niger Tornadoes ruled him out of the NPFL Super 4, which Rivers United won.

“I got injured in a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes in Benin City and so I missed the Super 4,” he disclosed.

“But I am getting better and I am almost coming back.”

The former Flying Eagles star midfielder has been linked with a transfer overseas and he himself said he will not rule out the possibility of moving abroad.

“I am still a Rangers player, but nothing says I will not be playing in Europe the next day,” he said.

Offensive midfielder Nwobodo was outstanding last season as Rangers won the league after a 32-year wait.

Gernot Rohr: The New Super Eagles White Witch Doctor

By Augustine Akhilomen

The last time Nigeria had a decent run in a World Cup qualifiers was under the reign of Philippe Troussier enrout France 98', where he guided the Super Eagles to top of the table against teams like Guinea, Kenya and Burkina Faso.

The French tactician who was unpopular amongst football lovers in Nigeria, was known as the 'White Witch doctor' for his overall successful legacy towards African football, something he exhibited with his no-nonsense style of football before he was sacked by the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

Eighteen years later and a new man is in the helm of affairs, with a low profile as a coach as far as African football is concern, he is gradually following in the path of Troussier, winning two of his matches convincingly for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation in August to qualify the team for the biggest football showpiece in the world, Gernot Rohr seems to have completely won the hearts of Nigerians with his 100% winning record since taking over from former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh. Beating Tanzania 1-0 in a dead-rubber 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, the team followed it up with a 2-1 win against Zambia in Ndola before thrashing Africa's number one team, Algeria 3-1 in Uyo, to remain top of group B with six points. The victory against the Desert Foxes of Algeria simply shows his tactical know-how and discipline as a coach, without claiming all has been won and dusted.

"I am enthusiastic to get to work. This is a big challenge because Nigeria has big players everywhere and has the ability to do well internationally. I have a German heart - the heart of a winner.

"I have confidence that with the right atmosphere and the right support, the Super Eagles have the capacity not only to qualify for the World Cup, but get to the latter stages of the competition." Rohr told the NFF website during his unveiling in Abuja.

During his appointment as the technical adviser of the team, there was lots of criticism from football experts, who thought the football house have taking a big gamble on the German tactician. Slight chance was given to him to make a difference in the team because of his poor background of African football, despite the fact that he has coached teams such as Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel and the national teams of Gabon and Niger.

Rohr took Gabon to the quarter-finals of the 2012 Nations Cup on home soil and also managed Niger at the 2013 edition but failed to get them out of the group stage. Before leaving Burkina Faso, he led the Stallions into the final round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

His Curriculum Vitae (CV) may not be too convincing for the Super Eagles job, knowing fully that Nigerians expects the best as far as getting the right results and playing 'sexy football' that would get everyone excited. Touted as an 'old fashion' coach, who doesn't possess that tactical and technical abilities to revive the dying state of football in Nigeria, he however, has went ahead with his own business regardless of what people say about him.

Besides, former sole administrator of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amos Adamu on August 25, said that Rohr's appointment would spell doom for Nigeria football.

“He does not have the pedigree, I don’t know him,” Adamu told Hot FM Abuja. “For now, we do not have a coach. He will just damage us and then he will leave.”

Nevertheless, in less than two months, the former Bordeaux manager has created an atmosphere of 'self belief' not only within the mindset of the players but also on the teeming Nigerians fans, which in a long time have lost identity of their darling Super Eagles.

Infusing the concept of youth and experience in the team, Rohr seems to have reignited the 1994 spirit that saw Nigeria qualify for the World Cup despite been pitched alongside teams such as Cote D'Ivoire and Algeria under former boss, Clemence Westerhof.

In addition, it's rare for the Super Eagles to play to a particular pattern after the glorious days of 1994 Nations Cup and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games winning squad. In Rohr, the senior national team has suddenly found a new blueprint, in terms of pattern, playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 that keeps the flow of football going.

Surprisingly, he has never accorded praises to himself in the two matches he has won; instead, he lauded the players' commitment, hunger and determination to make their nation proud.

“A positive attitude has helped us thus far, and I also want to commend the players for their discipline and dedication, and very good spirit in camp. They have been excellent.

“The mental strength is also there, because if you have to survive in such a difficult group, you need very good mental strength and focus. We have shown in the first two matches that we have the personnel and the good spirit to go all the way,” Rohr said.

Although it may be too early to blow his trumpet considering the fact that there are still many mountains to climb, however, Rohr's current standing in the group for Russia tickets, puts him head and shoulder for what appears to be a fairy tale story.

2018 World Cup Remains NFF Target - Pinnick

By Augustine Akhilomen

Despite the nation's economic recession, the Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick says their goal is to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria have remained unbeaten in their World Cup qualifying campaign, overcoming Zambia and Algeria respectively to top group B on six points and will face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on August 28, 2017 in Uyo.

Pinnick who has managed to convince members of the Super Eagles players that featured in both matches without been paid their winning bonuses, revealed to Soccernet.com.ng that the federation are focused on qualifying the team for the World Cup regardless of the nation's economic crisis.

"To be honest with you, it has not been easy for the Nigerian Football Federation to convince some of the invited Super Eagles players over unpaid winning bonuses. This is one of the most toughest moments of my administration and I am glad the players have shown some level of understanding without over blowing the issue," Pinnick told Soccernet.com.ng.

"However, we are on course to making sure that the senior national team qualify for the 2018 World Cup regardless of the nation's economic recession because that is the major target of the federation.

"Football is one sport that makes Nigerians happy and we will try our best to make all our national teams happy,"he said.

Rohr Wants Home Based Players To Provide Cover At Full Back, Not In Attack

Nigerian players based at home have been given a chance to stake a claim in the Super Eagles by Coach of the team Gernot Rohr.

Rohr has to that effect leave the door open for them to push for a slot in the left and right full back spot, where the team is short of options at the moments.

He has mandated his assistants, Salisu Yusuf and Imama Amakapabo to source for credible full backs in the league, who can push the foreign based options in the team for a starting spot.

The Franco-German manager urged them to lay less emphasis on attacking players as the team is well stock upfront with talented foreign based stars, who have been delivering both for the team and their club sides.

So far Yusuf and Imama have been putting together possible names, who are most likely to be tried out during the friendly game against Egypt scheduled for next year.

Nigeria internationals Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa have discovered their next opponents in the Champions League following the draw that took place on Monday afternoon.

AF Nigeria Nigeria Premier League 2016 Tunisia
Rangers place $500,000 price tag on star striker Chisom Egbuchulam

Nigeria champions Enugu Rangers have asked Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel to pay $500,000 for the transfer of star striker Chisom Egbuchulam.

“Rangers have responded to an enquiry for Chisom by asking the Tunisian club to pay them $500,000,” a top official disclosed.
Egbuchulam himself has confirmed Etoile’s interest and said he wishes to now ply his trade overseas.

Belgian club Lokeren are equally interested in the player, who has transformed from a bit player to the star of Rangers under coach Imama Amapakabo.

He said he still has a year left on his contract with ‘The Flying Antelopes’.

Last season, Egbuchulam scored 16 goals in the league, a record which earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles for a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Zambia in October.

A winger or a striker, he is powerful, skillful and packs a shot as he again demonstrated with his well-taken brace against Rivers United in the on-going NPFL Super 4 in Enugu.

was asking about his general play; tackles, dribbles, shots...

Did he look as good as he did when he was the Big 45?

I don't think we over analyse anyone else's game the way we over analyse that of Kelechi and we should be doing that

Even when Kelechi has a good game, we get a blow by blow analysis, so, we should apply same to every player. The way everyone was going on and giving thegoodjoe centre stage this entire weekend, one would think only Kelechi plays for the Super Eagles.

If I were Iwobi, I'd be just a bit peeved that nobody is even sniffing at my game though it was good(I assume). So, next time we're doing a run down, please, someone should equally analyze Iwobi, Moses, Musa the same way we do Kelechi.

We have just one Man City fan and at least three Arsenal fans here, so, why is it the City player getting all the spotlight?

Well, the coming of "Jesus" always carries a Peter, James and John combo also.... Let's see how things unfold... smiley Not to forget that "a judas iscariot" is not far off.... wink

Iheanacho will excel be it at City or anywhere else eventually. Me, I'm not scared anymore.... I have observed and seen that Nacho's path to greatness is kinda unique. The kid is working hard and doing his best everyday to improve. I see this in his plays and in his attitude. I know his best will be more than good enough in the end...... Just that I don't know if his greatness will be at City or someplace else. But what's certain? NACHO IS A GREAT-IN-WAITING.

This is no surprise why everytime ManCity fails to win, and Nacho played that game, People here will speedily and always wanna jump on Nacho (albeit subtly) and call him out for "bad performance".

He is one of the major leaders and potential world-class talents of our new rising generation in the current Super Eagles team. This is why he's possibly the most talked about player on NL sports. Everyone wanna talk about Nacho or have an opinion of him.

Same thing happened to Mikel after Holland 2005. Till date, Mikel bears such burden. When you are the leading light or brightest of the lot, it is expected. So let's relax....

Gabriel Jesus.... Welcome.... smiley You may be Savior to City but Nacho is still "The One We have been looking for" in "global terms" smiley

Bring on the hustle!!!! You don't become "true" no.1 without the keenest bad-ass competition. Dad thought me that.

Bottomline is I'm confident Iheanacho will end up being world-class and a main-stay be it at the Etihad or someplace else. THERE'S SOMETHING I SEE IN THE KID WHICH ONLY FEW CAN SEE. There's this fire in his eyes... Hahahaha...

In Eminem's voice... "I'M NOT AFRAID!!!!!"

TheGoodJoe:

Gabriel Jesus won the Brazilian League Golden Ball award. Now I am scared for Nacho. The Brazilian kid is coming with too much hype. From what I heard, he is also a monster on the training pitch.

Nacho needs to work twice as hard because the hustle is real.

Ex- International Wants Leon Balogun To
Replace Ahmed Musa As Super Eagles Vice-Captain

Former Super Eagles goalkepper Emmanuel
Babayaro has urged Super Eagles coach Gernot
Rohr to make Mainz 05 defender Leon Balogun
vice captain of the Super Eagles.

Leicester City star Ahmed Musa is currently the
vice captain of the team but Babayaro says
Balogun has shown enough in terms of leading
the players on the pitch to be named as vice
captain.

”Balogun has leadership qualities that only Mikel can match in the Super Eagles, I love Musa a lot for all he has achieved in such a short time, but when it comes to motivating players Balogun is a more natural leader” Babayaro told
Owngoalnigeria.com.

”He (Balogun) has made William Troost Ekong
looked world class, he is always giving out
instructions, unfortunately a lot of people don’t
see that on camera.

”I don’t know about his relationship with the
press, which is a criteria as well to be named
leader of a national team, but I also don’t think
Musa has a good rapport with the press as well.
Balogun should be named vice captain”.

Russian-Nigerian Full Back Idowu To Meet
With Gernot Rohr Next Week

Owngoalnigeria.com has gathered that coach of
the Nigeria national team Gernot Rohr will meet
with Russian-Nigerian full back Brian Idowu next
week to talk him into playing for Nigeria.

Rohr views the 24 year old as one of his options at the full back position which has been problematic for the Super Eagles since he took over as coach of the Nigeria team.

So far he has used four different players at right
back in just three games as coach of the Nigeria
team, no thanks to Musa Muhammed inactivity
with Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir, which has
seen Kenneth Omeruo, Wilfred Ndidi and Shehu
Abdullahi play there despite not being their
preferred role.

Idowu is born in Nigeria to Russian parents, which qualifies him for Russia and Nigeria, but Nigeria appears to have stole a march on Russia with Rohr set to meet with the Amkar Perm man.

Comfortable as a right back or left back, he has in the past confirmed his willingness to switch
allegiance to Nigeria if called up by the national
team selectors.

Very simple Dear.... smiley

That's what one gets when he's the brightest of the lot and one of the super major leaders of a rising and new golden era.

That's just the truth. Even Mikel Obi suffered same fate. Why didn't anyone "over-analyse" Obasi, Kaita, Promise, Isaac Okoronkwo, Monday James, Vanzekin, Apam Onyekachi the same way Mikel was?

Mikel was simply the brightest of the lot.

Even in the first golden era of Nigerian football, Kanu and Okocha received the spotlight more than any other in same era (Keshi, Yekini, Oliseh, Amuneke, Oruma, Babayaro, Rufai, Dosu Joseph, Ike Shorunmu, Taribo West, Mobi Oparaku, Siasia, Finidi Geroge, Amokachi, etc...).

It happens. smiley In every generation, there are "stand-out" leaders, and whether anyone admits it or not, Kelechi Promise Iheanacho is one of Nigeria's leaders of this new era post-Russia 2018.

So it's no surprise he takes centre-stage most-times in a weekend when a lot of other star Nigerian acts perform.

Was surprised no one "elaborated and over-analysed" on Iwobi's resurgence of late.... I see Iwobi as a super vital twin leader of this new era alongside Iheanacho. He and Nacho reminds me of the Okocha-Kanu prestige.

safarigirl:
was asking about his general play; tackles, dribbles, shots...

Sarenren-Bazee Shows Why Rohr Is Keen On
Luring Him From Germany With Double Assist For Hannover 96

German born Nigerian forward Noah-Joel
Sarenren-Bazee was once again the goto man for 2. Bundesliga side Hannover 96 bagging two
assists as they recover from going a goal down to winning 2-1 against 10 man VFB Stuttgart.

The 20 year old set up Martin Harnik to help his
side draw level before picking out Felix Klaus with three minutes left to play with another incisive pass for the winner.

Just like last week, he was once again voted the
man of the match, a sign of how well he has
grown this season after overcoming the various
injury problems he has had in the past.

He is one of the players coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr is trying to convince to switch the country of their birth and play for Nigeria at senior level, although he is yet to be capped by Germany.

So far his performances has shown that he will
definitely add something different to the forward
line of the Nigerian team, as he can create and
score goals as well.

or he just needs to get out of City.

We can can't have a repeat of that Mikel in Chelsea rubbish mbok, it's not by force to stay in a big club. I'm sure he'll get lots of offers from other good clubs who don't have a thing for patching their defaults with bags of money and are actually interested in development of youth players.

Kelechi, if you or your handlers follow this page, somebody better start throwing you at clubs like Dortmund, Juve, Arsenal, Wolfsburg set....just get ou5 of City

Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi vows to 'kick
on' and reclaim place in Arsene Wenger's starting line up

Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi is determined to "kick on" and reclaim his place in Arsene Wenger's starting line up.

Iwobi started seven consecutive Premier League games for the Gunners between September and November, appearing to cement his place in Wenger's plans.

But the 20-year-old has slipped down the pecking order of late due to fierce competition for places, particularly given Theo Walcott's outstanding form.

Iwobi came off the bench to score Arsenal's third goal in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Stoke City and the Nigeria international is hopeful he has done enough to receive more game time.

"I just need to kick on now and show what I can do to get into the starting team again," he told the club's official website.

"It was much needed win [against Stoke City] -
even though we started off a bit shaky, we were
able to get through in the end and it was a great performance from the team.

"We’d like to clean a sheet but we were able to
get three points, we defended well and it will
boost our confidence," he added.

Iwobi will not have to wait long to discover
whether he has secured another starting berth
with Arsenal in action against Everton on Tuesday night.

Wenger's side occupy second place ahead of the trip to Goodison Park and could climb to the top of the tale with victory over Ronald Koeman's side as leaders Chelsea are not in action until Wednesday.
