From experience, the so called inefficiency happens when any or a combination of the below holds. 1. Load-Battery Ratio The battery bank comprises of your batteries and each battery has a specified backup time. Some appliances like AC, water pumping machine drains the batteries faster than TV, fridge, lighting point. You'll certainly have a loss of backup time if the load-battery ratio isn't properly matched. 2. Inverter size Each inverter has its own maximum specified load. While proposing an inverter, the load should be at about 50% of the size of the inverter. 3. Bad or Weak or Refurbished Battery There are a lot of refurbished batteries in the market. If you are sold a refurbished one, you won't draw up to 40% from the battery. One or more bad batteries in a battery bank can affect the outcome of the system. 4. Load Separation If an inverter isn't meant to power the whole house, the load of the house should be properly separated such that the inverter carries only what is meant for it. 5. Installation The installer should be well grounded in some basic knowledge of the products he's installing. Also he should properly calculate the load in regards to the battery bank and advise the client on the estimated time of discharge. 6. Clients abuse. Some clients strain their batteries and inverter. You can't use an electric pressing iron in a 1.5KVA inverter, it'll damage it. Clients behave very funny and more often than not, they don't own up to the installer. ndcide: 2 Likes |

This simply means, they use Direct Current(DC) voltage. They're are rated as 12VDC, 24VDC etc. So when you've your solar panels to charge the battery or batteries, they will then power your appliances. See a solar fridge below... please take note of the deep cycle battery beside it. otokx: 1 Like

solar power is expensive from the panels to the battries ahn ahn. unless someone can import lithium ion power packs and integrate them with solar panels. |

We've been powering a pumping machine for a farm and the farm house for almost 6 months now and the solar components are still very optimal. It's 3.5KVA inverter, 2 batteries, two solar charge controllers and 8 solar panels. bettercreature:

Thank you for this. But, if you're using pressing iron, won't there be a similar surge demand? I've actually seen a couple of.people using solar with just two Ac's though, so don't think that should be an issue. What do you think? starpower: |

I commend the writer for the good work. You will agree with me that one major setback of solar systems is the fact that it drains speedily under air-conditioning load. With air conditioning accounting for between 40-60% of total energy costs by most buildings and considering the tropical climate in Africa, with its attendant hot conditions during summer periods, this becomes a big setback. However, the performance of solar systems can be greatly enhanced by installing Solacoat zero-energy indoor cooling systems. Solacoat effectively reflects and emits sun rays from roof-tops, thereby lowering internal temperatures by a minimum of 8 deg. Celsius and keeping indoors cooler and comfortable, without energy or air conditioning. Kindly contact me via info@procorrsolutions.com or call +234-8039352489, should you be interested in creating comfort in your building or facility without energy and start making substantial savings. 1 Share

debbie: You're very right, Debbie. The Nigerian govt. really needs someone to talk sense into them. Apart from the high cost of maintenance, getting high quality panels are the main issue, as our business men have flooded the market with inferior panels, for extremely high cost. Solar panels, just like every household devices are of different grades, standards, qualities and prices. In India at the moment, you can get the best quality solar panels for cheap prices (not like super cheap) and use for like 2-years without any form of maintenance. Batteries inclusive. Solar energy generations is a core business point at the moment; technologies like "Advancion" are taking over the renewables energy world by storm, with very minimal maintenance(s), done as per schedule/routine. You can practically use your panels/batteries for 5-years without doing jack! Our field guys only makes sure that dusts are removed from the panels surface once a week. These panels are made in India, and currently the best in the market. The govt. of Nigeria is so naïve, that they have never even held a solar panel in their hands. In most parts of the world, all locals/citizen are encouraged to go solar, and you even have the advantages to connect to the national grid and make lots of money selling power to the govt. You use your power that's generated by you, and sell the remaining to the govt. through the grid. At the end of the month, you get paid. Most Houses in the Middle East have solar panel. Power plants are shutting down. Solar plants are hot-cakes and its even quite easy to install/construct. A 200 MW "Advancion" solar power plant cost 400 Million Naira (design, build, and maintain) and our silly leaders are crying everywhere. But then, what kind of regulations do they have In place that makes business difficult for the woman you talked about? Just curious. 3 Likes |

The secret of a successful solar power installation is that it has to be tailor made. There is no one size fits all like most "installers" or sellers do. This boils down to unprofessional approach in design and installation. Once it is professionally designed, you will definitely get the right result. Also, the need for the user to stay within appropriate usage, i mean not overloading with "foreign" loads is a major determinant in the overall success. I must admit that the INITIAL cost of investment in solar power is huge when you consider the shortt term, however on the long term it is highly economical. Sunpower solar panel efficiency is astonishing 80%. It's the best in the market. The sun provides more than enough energy in just one hour to supply our planet’s energy needs for an entire year. |

Our problem has always been "penny wise, pound foolish." We will rather spend small small everyday than spend heavy at once. Well, this is understandable. For those saying Solar installation is expensive....you are right. It is expensive....initially. We are talking of 500,000 and above at once. But in the long run it is cheaper. Think of the petrol you use per day. Multiply it by 365 days....multiply it by 730 days(2 years). Just keep multiplying and see the millions you are already spending. Mind you a single solar panel has a lifespan of 25 years. It's up to you: Spend small small all your life or spend once for once. Call 07056578594 for more details. We install panels all over Port Harcourt. |
