scholes0: Question is which English does Nigeria speak officially? It's British English so forget about the American pronunciation and focus on the British pronunciations. In that light, the OP is correct and not teaching "lobbish". 2 Likes |

ibitzbarlow: The world is a Global village now, and the most popular forms of Global English carries the day. Bought a computer a few months ago, and the System's own Auto Correct system was telling me that the spelling of Labour and Colour were incorrect... Yeah right Obviously, Britain is not doing enough to protect its own legacies. |

Onyejemechimere:Op, while trying to correct folks, you made some blunders. It's incorrect to say 'more smarter'. You either say smarter or more smart. But, some of your pronunciations are also wrong. Please do a thorough job before posting. Thanks! 3 Likes 1 Share |

My pronunciation is right except Divorce although I pronounce it's as De-vorce sometimes and Dye-vorve sometimes but the British use Dye-vorve and Americans use De-vorce. So I'll say I'm correct both ways |
Re: 8 Words We Pronounce Wrongly Everyday – Everyone Is Guilty Of No 5 by ibitzbarlow(m): 5:43pm On Dec 13, 2016 |
scholes0: That is not correct completely. In informal settings, any of the variants is acceptable if there is proper communication and understanding. However, for official purposes, as a Nigerian you must stick with British English. I bet you cant spell "Labour" as "labor" in a "Use of English" examination and expect to be svored correct. The computer you talked about has provision in its language setting for you to choose the variant of English you want. Most laptops are from the US or from China by US companies and so they come with the default American English setting. It's your choice to use it that way or change the Language to British or any other English variant. 1 Like |

Spoken English in Nigeria is nothing to write home about. Lots of kids are taught wrong pronunciations and also, the society does not encourage oral English. I could recall during my PPA as a corper, my computer classes were superior both pronunciation and practical and the students wanted me to teach them conversational English as well, but I refused in order to save someone's job. A student said he could see bed fly. I was confused and said bed does not fly. I had to correct his pronunciation on bird. 1 Like |
