Henry240:

Denel produces no CIWS. My floating stream-of-consciousness fact-free disposition led me to boldly utter this ignorance with certainty.

There, fixed it for you. On to giles14's question; not sure how practicable this is to ships the size of Karaduwa, but Denel literature says this:

The 35DPG fires the full range of the effective standard NATO 35 x 228 mm rounds at 1 100 rounds per minute, with a muzzle velocity of 1 175 meters per second.

That gives it the firepower to effectively engage aerial targets out to 4 000 meters, and surface targets out to 6 000 meters.

With electric gun drives, the gun can slew through 180 degrees in four seconds, delivering projectiles at an accuracy and dispersion of less than 1mrad and 2mrad, respectively.

Carrying 500 ready rounds the 35DPG cater for more than 12 engagements of 2 second each before reloading, which can be carried out by two persons within 10 minutes from the ready use lockers installed behind the gun.

The 35DPG's anti-missile capability can be enhanced by using AHEAD programmable fuzed ammunition from Rheinmetall Defence (previously Oerlikon-Contraves). Evaluation results with AHEAD exceeded expectations, and proved that the required kill probability can be achieved against surface-to-surface missiles.

A further enhancement of the 35DPG's anti-missile capability is possible by adding the unique Closed Loop Fire Correction system developed by Denel.

This upgrade allows the 35 mm projectiles to be tracked all the way to the target, enabling the fire-control system to implement real-time corrections for bias errors caused by the combat system, and also to compensate for the effects of meteorological conditions.

The 35DPG has also been designed from the outset to be simple to integrate with an existing ship and its systems:
It is a non-deck-penetrating mount that only needs sufficient free deck space to be installed, making no demands on below deck volume other than for a console in the operations room. For this reason, it could be installed above the rotorcraft hangar.

• Its own on-board computers handle ballistic calculations and the fire-control function, which means that it depends on the ship only for real time three-dimensional target information provided by the combat management and tracking systems. That greatly simplifies integration with wide range of combat management and tracking systems.

Weighing only 5 500Kg (unloaded) and with a barrel sweep of 3.8m facilitate installation on ships as small as 200 tons.

• The 35DPG uses fully modular subsystems and subsystem elements to simplify maintenance and give maximum adaptability. It also uses commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components where those are suitable, which further simplifies maintenance.

• The 35DPG's combination of non-deck-penetrating design, relative ease of integration with combat management and tracking systems, modular design and the use of COTS components, result in a very cost - effective system: The initial cost is kept down by the ease with which it can be installed and integrated; the through-life costs are kept down by a maintenance friendly design and the use of COTS components

The GA35 multipurpose cannon is exceptionally rugged and simple to maintain. Optimised for simplicity and reliability, the system has only 200 components and can be dismantled without the use of any special tools. Mounted on naval platforms, the GA35 can operate single or double mounted, integrated cannon system or with missiles in a hybrid role.

The GA35 is gas operated, firing belted ammunition from an open breech position. The positively locked breech, mechanical firing pin and four installation positions enhance safety and versatility.

The cannon allows for single gas driven feeders with ammunition feed from three directions without additional parts or double gas driven feeders with first shot selection between different ammunition types.

State-of-the-art electrical drive technology is used for the gun drives. The gun drive sub-system comprises of elevation motor-gearbox assembly, azimuth motor-gearbox assembly, elevation sensor gearbox, azimuth sensor gearbox assembly, power transformer and gun drive electronics unit.

Some Chairborne warriors here are impressed by this sort of meaningless rubbish so...:

Always for the cameras with these sorts of exercises. What of my other question re role of Inkunzi PA(w)?

While we have you here. cheesy
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by 61mech: 5:07pm On Dec 17, 2016
1. I would allocate the Inkunzi PAW to the section 2ib running the MAG crew as his primary weapon.
Would be very useful for indicating targets for the gunners.
SOP: load the damn thing outside my vehicle please.

2. If you are unhappy about replacing your 40mm AGL with the 20mm Inkunzi Strike, just think of it as a replacement for you vehicle mounted 7.62. It can do both.

frumentius:

@61Mech, @kikuyu1, @Mikeczar and everyone else interested in such questions:

Following on from the above on the place of the Y2 grenade launcher in a section.
Denel PMP's 20x40mm cartridge with its varied projectiles (API, HE, SAPHEI/T and PRAC/T) has already spawned 3 different weapons systems: the Inkunzi Strike, Truvelo 20x40mm CMS(a new compact anti-materiel rifle specifically for the 20x42mm, based on the existing large-calibre CMS) and the Inkunzi PAW A2.(pics attached).

Now, the former 2 weapons' role is self-evident. But what of the iNkunzi personal area weapon (in earlier versions known as the Neopup PAW)? Is it a section or platoon or company weapon? With the flat trajectory of the 20x42mm suppossedly superseding the 40mm currently employed in the Y2, will it be the grenadier's standard weapon? And so on and so forth...

Or is it, as my colleague at Doctrine Dev. says, "a weapon looking for a role?" A formulation with which I disagree, by the way. Sometimes doctrine has to follow/adapt to accommodate weapons systems which are out there. The needs and experiences of soldiers out in the field have been known to presage the adoption of weapons and systems not currently covered by existing doctrine and TTPs.

An aside: I like the response of the Denel PMP guy when we asked about the name evolution from Neopup to Inkunzi PAW. "For a devastating weapon, Neo(new)pup v.s. inkunzi(bull) PAw. Which one denotes serious bad-assery?" grin grin grin

PIC 1: Inkunzi Strike, belt-fed fully automatic with 350 rounds/minute effective out to 600m and suppressive fire against area targets to 1 000m, vehicle mount either RWS or manually-operated, tripod for dismount under development;

PIC 2&3: Truvelo 20x42mm CMS; and

PIC 4: Inkunzi PAW.

Weapons Platoon.

I think it would be more profitable to seek out the belt fed 20mm on a tripod.

a couple "fiddy's" and a couple "20 mike-mikes" running next to some "Yankee-3's" could sure as hell lay down some hurt

Goddamn, the riflemen would be pissed because there would be nothing left for them to shoot at.

Imo,I'd never give up the 40 mm at the section level. I'd have the 20 mm Inkunzi vehicle mounted to replace any .50s or 7.62s

Mech or motorised section? Put another way: section de-bussing out of Ratel, Casspir or Mamba?
(Aside: delay in Project Sepula has led to questions about proper definitions of mechanised and motorised. Personally, Mech combat assault echelon should be Badger and Ratel - varieted between ICV and upgraded APC.
Motorised comprises purely APC in latest CASSPIR in medium role and whatever takes the place of the current Mamba in the LAV role.
Logs deserves its own separate discussion, of course.)

I'm very happy with the Inkunzi Strike. Navy, Air Force, Army (yes, including the Parabats), SF; it represents one of the most "joint" or "inter" services-capable weapons system currently. Will not replace but complement both the Y2 and Y3 grenade launchers.
Despite all these new-fangled incarnations of 20mm, there remains a place for 7.62 and 12.7.

We've settled the question of the Y2 grenade launcher by placing it in the augmented weapons section. Again, what do we do with the "Bull Pa"?

The moment of truth: personally, it should be an [augmented]section weapon. Add an extra man in the MAG? Exigencies have meant we ended up doing this anyway, in Darfur for example. Convoy protection there and concomitant ambushes meant sections were beefed up to 15pax, with same Rifle Group and beefed up MAG. (of course the argument about what transpired in Sudan is a different subject.)

What about a dismounted section? The flat trajectory of the 20x42mm Inkunzi PAW is supposedly better than the 40mm Y2. So where do you sacrifice?

Nota Bene: I have absolutely no problems with the future employment of the Inkunzi Strike - belt fed automatic vehicle mounted (61 Mech optimised grin grin grin!); nor of the Truvelo 20x42mm CMS (hell, the Recces already have it in their arsenal).

What does one do with the Inkunzi PAW? Excellent weapon, yes. 2 Middle East countries have bought it, yes. But they're not the crowd to develop doctrine! EU/NATO countries are looking at it as an alternative to the very expensive XM-25, yes.

Still doesn't solve the tactical/doctrinal conundrum for the SANDF.

Belgian Special Forces in their Unimogs in Tchad. They directly copied this from Recces in Angola and yet when we needed vehicles for border patrol, we neglected the SAMIL-derived OTT Hunter (disqualified because...errmm...uhhh...etc) and REVA Scout (a paper concept then etc). Land Cruiser chosen (admittedly the best performer in the tests which included Unimog though not SAMIL) though production line discontinued in SA and local assembly at 75% is costing us more than refurbishing SAMIL 20s.

When Ghana SF bought 12 OTT Hunters, some said not a patrol vehicle but SF(conveniently?). When they bought more, and Equatorial Guinea bought 15, I thought Higher might see some sense. Alas, it was too late for us. The civilians at MoD (which is where the Land Cruiser decision emanated) know better.

Meanwhile, in January 2017 Belgian Special Forces are coming to test the REVA Scout as a cheaper and better alternative to their current Unimogs (Regardless of frantic inducentments by Mercedes Benz).

Someone spell ironic WTF!!!
