The battery can only be charged when vehicle is in motion as the synergy drive switches power between both power sources and when the car is running on fuel, it charges the battery and stops for the battery to take over, when battery is fully charged... When the vehicle isn't being driven, there's no way the battery would get charged. Secondly, your hybrid car shouldn't be driven on the battery solely. Some people do not like fueling cos they hear it's a hybrid vehicle and consumes less fuel. Doing that, would amount to killing the battery faster. The battery cost a lot to replace but it's worth it. The major disadvantage is that you can't just call any mutiu or muftua to work on the vehicle if it develops a fault. You need a specialist to look at it.

Note: if you won't be driving your hybrid vehicle for long, get someone to run it around for 30 mins thrice a week. This would be enough to help keep the battery in shape till you come around.

Its crazy to use hybrid Camry in Nigeria.... I used 200k to fix the hybrid system of my wife's car sometime last two years, when I was in Naija, I have to even pay flight ticket for a mechanic from Lagos to Enugu.

Whenever we return for xmas , my wife must call me from the road where the car messed her up, I was forced to abandon the car after calculating the expenses which I have placed on the car over the few years and I decided to get her Toyota RAV4 2017.

The useless Toyota Camry hybrid is for sale in case any person want it.

We often come to Naija 2x a year, in Easter and December, so she uses the car periodically and as such I personally handles the maintenance whenever we comes back, to me the car is bunch of problem.

I have a very good friend who uses same car, the guy is suffering for what he bought with his money.

The day I went to get my wife another car here, before shipping it down to naija , Toyota showed me RAV4 2017 and was kinda saying something about model SE hybrid... I got mad with the man without even allowing him to finish whatever he is saying provided I heard hybrid on the statement, I got her XLE instead.

That's the problem. You hardly use the car. Who handles it while away? You can't park it down and expect all round performance anytime you come around. It wasn't designed to work that way. You don't park a hybrid down for long periods.

I don't know much about hybrid cars tho but as for Kia, I would disagree with you because I bought my Kia Rio brand new in 2004 and till date it has not given me issues, never broken down. More importantly I don't joke with maintenance and original spare parts

Using Hybrid cars in Nigeria is not feasible at all..

There are just very few technicians in the country who could help fix hybrid car issues, and they charge expensively.

My younger brother uses a 2007 camry hybrid version. The good fuel economy does not compensate for the expensive and outrageous maintenance cost.

The major issue with the Camry variant(the Prius & highlander type appears to be more reliable) is the "check hybrid warning" and "check VSC".

I remember a time we needed to replace the ABS, it was almost impossible to get it at Ladipo, it was scarce and eventually when we got it after weeks of intense search, it was sold for 180k while the non hybrid version of the same car was just 50k.

Let me also add that replacing the hybrid battery pack always costing an arm and a leg, it's not pocket friendly at all. If I remember correctly, I think briscoe offered to replace it for 600k as at 2years ago.

This car gulped well over a 1million naira in its first year of use. I'll advice anyone interested in owning a hybrid car in nigeria to think twice.
Except you're buying it chacha brand new, most of this tokunbos hybrid battery pack have reached functional limit.

Intending car buyers should be extremely careful cos hybrid car owners are already selling their problematic cars to unsuspecting victims at a catch penny price.

U made some valid points but this one. Higher resale value? Are u kidding me? Once u buy a hybrid car u are better off using it then trying to resell it after a few yrs of usage because only few people will appreciate it. Let's say u have a 2010 Camry hybrid and use it for 4 yrs, it will be much harder for u to resell it than someone with the non hybrid version and same yrs of usage. In fact u might end up selling ur used Camry hybrid for half the price of the non hybrid one.

Not really, I know people that have used hybrid for more than 3 years, though only Toyota products. From the highlander, Camry and prius. The only downside to hybrid is when you buy a lemon hybrid or when the battery pack fails, it is expensive from 450k before recession I don't know how much now. The Accord has hybrid and the civic though not common like Toyota.

Hybrid is worth it, if one can be observant and has the time first then money second to keep it in shape. The batteries are deadly if touched with bare hands, it can kill. So a technically inclined personnel is needed for it

My brother, you need to see the rate people are converting theirs into a regular car at Ladipo,especially the 07camry.
Even the so called auto companies shy away from fixing it. Its gets so bad a times that you'll need more than your pension money to fix it. In short, if you want peace of mind, just buy the non hybrid version of the car u fancy.


I should also add that aside from the hybrid battery pack(600k plus). The Camry hybrid uses a 12v DC battery like every normal car, but the shocker is that its cost well over 150k. Imagine 150k for a 12V DC car battery. Gbese buruku
