I am not a civil engineer but common sense do tell me that the strength of buildings re been reduced by shabby ratio of sand to cement mixture in a bid to make higher profit by block industry operators, poor reinforcement of pillars, poor ratio of stone:sand:cement mixture in the course of making a concrete, Owners of some buildings in Nigeria hv turned out to be an adviser to the bricklayers/mason men in a bid to cut cost, The regulatory agency hv been compromised as giving them their stipulated charge will cause them to approve ur structure and if u refuse to cooperate they will deem ur structure illegal n mark it for demolition/removal. So pathetic!
in the words of Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon "it is regrettably lugubrious "

the sorry case of substandard materials. The naijaway.

It is not necessarily the problem of substandard materials.

There is a lot of engineering and science involved in building. For example: How many builders vibrate their concrete during pouring to minimize or eradicate air pockets? I bet that more than 90% of local builders don't. Do they even understand the significance?

A lot of builders resort to "good enough" practice. Good thing is that Nigeria is not prone to earthquakes.

Makes me wonder if the builders mixed 1 bag of cement with a tipper of sand and started building a 2-storey sand castle.
