Kenya has requested C-145A Skytruck transport aircraft from the United States under the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) programme, with the US allocating three to the East African country.

This is according to the EDA database, which notes that six C-145As were requested for Kenya, but only three were allocated on 15 August. They are currently worth $9 million (versus the $30 million spent on their acquisition).

Also in August, the EDA programme authorised the delivery of two C-145As to Costa Rica, two C-145As to Estonia and two to Nepal.

The C-145 is the US Air Force designation for the PZL Mielec M28 - USAF Special Operations Command (AFSOC) acquired 18 C-145A Skytruck/Combat Coyotes, which entered service from 2009, being acquired through Sierra Nevada Corporation, which prepares the aircraft for their specific roles prior to delivery. The Skytrucks are flown in locations across the globe performing infiltration, exfiltration, resupply and other missions as well as foreign air force training.

In July 2015 AFSOC announced it was retiring two thirds of its C-145A fleet, with 11 aircraft subsequently being disposed of.The M28 is built in several guises, including for passenger, VIP, cargo, paratroop, medical, SAR, and maritime patrol missions. The M28 has good short takeoff and landing performance and can land on unprepared airstrips less than 1 000 feet (345 metres) long thanks to its high lift wing, thrust reversing propellers and low pressure tyres. It is powered by two 1 100 hp (820 kW) Pratt &Whitney Canada PT6-65B turboprops which are protected by inlet particle separators.

Is this a status thing with rich ogas? Even a guy I see on Instagram that imports cars to Naija at times has a police escort/driver, so what's the deal here? And is it a prevalent thing?

It's an avenue for the police to generate income. In Nigeria you can hire a police team for a period of time. We don't have armed private security guards here. Although there are many private security companies operating in the country, they aren't armed with lethal weapons.

The actual big guys, those Nigerians who employ thousands of Nigerians in their firms get security from the state .

It's not actually a status thing, and there jobs they aren't allowed to do.

You can get a police escort if you need one so far you can pay. However some people are automatically qualified for it.

Malian super Tucano

elivery of Mali’s six Super Tucano aircraft from Brazil appears imminent, with the aircraft being seen undergoing test flights in Brazil.

Two aircraft (PT-ZTF and PT-ZTI), in full Malian colours, were seen in late November and early December at Bacacheri Airport in Curitiba, south-eastern Brazil.

Mali signed a contract with Embraer for the aircraft at the Paris Air Show on 15 June 2015. Embraer said the contract includes logistic support for the operation of these aircraft and also provides a training system for pilots and mechanics of the Mali Air Force.

The A-29 Super Tucanos will be deployed for advanced training, border surveillance, and internal security missions.

Embraer has recorded a number of orders for its Super Tucano from African countries, which see it as a low cost light attack aircraft that can also be used as a trainer. On the continent, the Super Tucano has been ordered by Angola, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Senegal.

Ah I see, but I saw a recent interview with Femi Otedola and he had his own private security from what I could tell. Even the daughter had her own private security in Lagos. So they wouldn't be armed? Is there a reason why they aren't allowed weapons. BTW that guy on Instagram handle is @inspiredautos and he doesn't appear to be incredibly rich and the reason I thought it might be linked to status was because he uses the police sporadically, but thanks for clearing that up.

Yesterday Beegeagle's Blog Twitter account posted the following photo of NAF Panhard vehicles (AML-60s and VBLs) in a staging point. There are ERC 90s in the background, too.

The photo was posted with the comment:

"Largest assemblage of Panhard AMLs of the NA which I have seen for 25+ years. Gladdens the heart. Where are the Panhard AML 90s?

I have not spotted ONE unit of legacy hardware system (Panhard AML 90) throughout the duration of this war. Ditto the ENGESA EE9 Cascavel"

It's an interesting point. I remember seeing news photos of NAF AML-90s in action during the ECOWAS involvement with Sierra Leone but that's been a while. I've never once seen an NAF Cascavel. Perhaps they've been in storage or are simply unserviceable.

It is not possible, hence i earlier said there are jobs they aren't allowed to do. Home security is provided by private security contractors.

Events, Close Body Protection and Convoy protection.

I didn't even know we still had these. The last time i saw the AML series in large numbers was in the parade in 2010. Unfortunately we no longer hold those sort of parades any more.

There is a solitary photo of an AML-90 used in COIN ops, but that was way back in 2012. Since then none has been spotted in combat.

The EE9s have been spotted in combat though, I've seen at-least 3 of them.

Its the kind of legacy equipment, so i understand your enthusiasm, but the rest of us, not so much.

The whereabouts of the vehicles are largely unknown.

Guys like Otedola, Elumelu, Otudeko, Alakija, Ubah, these guys get protection from the state, off-course they still can hire Private Security Guards.

Too many guns in the society breed insecurity. That's why.
