This thread has become too repetitive.

Misguided ambitions. Nigeria is exploring space technology yet it does not even have enough electrical power to provide 24hr electricity to any of it's residents sad
Nigeria is building a war ship at billions of naira but cannot tackle and finish the Boko Haram who of totally destroyed would lead to billions being injected into Nigeria by investors in the marginalized northern areas.
If these billions were pumped into agriculture, such a green country with lots of rivers would stop importing basic necessities for its citizens e.g. Milk and other common produce.

Industrialization. Nigerians claim that their industries are the main reasons why they are lacking 24/7 power in their homes.. Lol. I mean what is the need for these industries if I am going to go home to a dark house on most nights.
.

@bolded

Who told you electricity is the only problem Nigeria is facing?
So, because electricity is bad, Nigeria should ignore other problems like environmental issues, Agricultural issues, Electoral issues, Internet issues, Communication,, Health etc, ba.

My friend, those things I listed are what we use our Satellites for and Nigeria is making money from them.

If Kenya doesn't have the technology and money doesn't mean Nigeria doesn't have and should not use them. grin

Read the article below and take note of the bolded. It will clear you of your ignorance. grin

How Nigeria has been using its satellites
By Jacob Aron

Yes, Nigeria has a space programme. Since 2003 the West African country has been operating its own satellites, three of which are currently collecting data from Earth orbit. But this week Nigeria’s space agency came under fire after UK newspaper the Daily Mail reported on British politicians questioning why Nigeria is spending money on satellites while accepting foreign aid for the large proportion of its citizens who live in poverty.

In fact, the country’s satellites support food production in the region and disaster relief around the world – including helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the US.

Nigeria’s National Space Research & Development Agency (NASRDA) launched its first orbiter, NigeriaSat-1, in 2003. The roughly $13 million cost was paid for by the Nigerian government, but it was built by Surrey Space Technology (SST) in the UK and launched from a Russian spaceport.

The spacecraft was equipped with high-resolution optical and infrared cameras. “They are there to look at agriculture production, improving food security,” says Audrey Nice of SST. The satellite was also designed for environmental monitoring, such as tracking desertification and even locust swarms.

Eye on disaster
NigeriaSat-1 lasted until 2012, four years longer than expected. It was succeeded by NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X, which both launched in 2011 carrying similar instruments. These satellites were also made at SST, with Nigerian engineers helping to build the latter. In addition to a continued environmental mission, the satellites’ high-resolution images of the country will help Nigeria review electoral boundaries ahead of its general elections in 2015.

The NigeriaSats are also part of the international Disaster Monitoring Constellation, coordinated by SST. This network of satellites includes Chinese, Spanish and UK spacecraft that can provide rapid images from space when environmental disasters strike.

In 2005 NigeriaSat-1 was the first satellite to send back pictures of the east coast of the US following Hurricane Katrina, says Nice. And the orbiter contributed images to aid workers following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Nigeria provides disaster-related imagery for free , but the country generates income from the satellites by selling other image data.

NASRDA also commissioned a Chinese-built communications satellite, NigComSat-1, that launched from China in 2007. The satellite lost power a year later and was replaced in 2011 by NigComSat-1R, which is currently providing broadcast and internet services in Nigeria.

@bolded 2

Who told you Boko Harem is the only security issue Nigeria is facing?

Have you not heard about oil bunkery, Militants in the Niger Delta and pirates?

So, Nigeria should leave those ones and only face the Boko boys?

O, Nigeria should abandon their God given talents and cough out money to buy ships from US and EU who are not ready to sell weapons to Nigeria?

And who told you Nigeria can't make money from building and selling ships like South Korea is doing to boast their economy? grin

My friend, you are shallow minded. grin

Someone mentioned that nigerians are so hilarious they go to a foreign land, meet a nigerian selling roast corn by the roadside, and they immediately proclaim to the folks back home that they now control the food industry there. Effing hilarious.

Ignorance at it's peak.
Most whites and foreigners come to Kenya for charity works and to see the country with Africa's largest and most numerous slums.

Nigeria Corruption Report

Corruption is a significant obstacle to business in Nigeria: companies are very likely to encounter bribery and other corrupt practices. Corruption risks are pervasive throughout all institutions but are most prevalent in the police.

Judicial System

Nigeria's judiciary is characterised by a high degree of corruption and political interference, despite its independence being guaranteed under the constitution (FitW 2015). Most Nigerians feel the judicial system is corrupt (GCB 2013), and judicial officials frequently request bribes for favourable rulings or faster transactions (HRR 2013). Nigeria's legal framework to settle disputes or to challenge regulations is weak and inefficient (GCR 2014-2015). Enforcing a contract can be costly and takes, on average, 509 days,

Police

Almost all Nigerians believe the police is corrupt, making it the most corrupt institution in Nigeria (GCB 2013). A strong impediment to business in Nigeria is local police, which are considered very unreliable in enforcing the law (GCR 2014-2015). As a result, businesses in Nigeria face extra costs to ensure protection from terrorism, general crime and violence (GCR 2014-2015).

Public Services

Nigeria's public service suffers from widespread corruption. Government regulations are burdensome for businesses, and bribes and irregular payments are often paid (GCR 2014-2015). There is a high risk of encountering corruption when trying to obtain operating licences, electrical connections or water connections (ES 2014). Construction permits can be obtained faster than elsewhere in the region, but starting a business takes slightly longer (31 days on average); dealing with the Commission for Corporate Affairs (CAC) is the most time-consuming part of the procedure (DB 2015).

Land Administration

Property rights in Nigeria are regulated but not sufficiently protected (GCR 2014-2015), and registering property is a lengthy and costly process (DB 2015), creating ample opportunity for corruption. A significant number of businesses report being expected to give gifts or facilitation payments to obtain a construction permit (ES 2014). Land is granted to businesses as a hereditary lease from the Nigerian government, can be contingent on corruption and favouritism,...

Tax Administration

Collusion with public authorities is common and enables corruption within Nigeria's tax administration. There is a significant risk of being asked for a bribe, gift or facilitation payment when interacting with tax officials (ES 2014).

Public Procurement

Corruption is common in Nigeria's public procurement sector, with up to one-third of companies expecting to give gifts or payments to secure a government contract (ES 2014). Regulation has improved in recent years, but large-scale corruption and political favouritism continues to affect the sector (ICS 2015).

Natural Resources

Nigeria's natural resources sector is affected by corruption. In June 2015, Nigeria's Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative called upon the government to recover USD several billion from oil and gas firms in Nigeria and to investigate non-transparent contracts and transactions of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) (NEITI, June 2015). As of June 2015, Nigeria's anti-corruption agency and intelligence service are investigating offshore processing agreements between Pipelines and Product Marketing Co (PPMC), a subsidiary of the NNPC, and three oil trading companies: Sahara Group, Aiteo and Duke Oil (the trading subsidiary of NNPC). Contracts have reportedly allowed for crude oil to be swapped for refined products, resulting in revenue loss of around USD 600 million (Reuters, June 2015). Expired contracts with Trafigura, Taleveras and Ontario Oil and Gas will also be examined (Reuters, June 2015). The NNPC has frequently been implicated in corruption, fraud and tax evasion scandals

Nigeria – Total (received) (FY 2012): $338 Million)

Africa’s most populous nation, largest African contributor to peacekeeping missions, crucial global supplier of crude oil, and the fifth-largest supplier of U.S. crude oil imports. Nigeria seemingly has it all. However, inadequate infrastructure, lack of incentives and policies to promote private sector development; and poor access to quality basic education and health services threaten progress and fuel the grievances, which amplify political unrest, in addition to ethnic and religious differences.

Also, a high poverty rate, coupled with a large population of unemployed and underemployed youths (42 percent of those between the ages of 15-24), and increased insecurity in the North, heighten the risk of escalating unrest.

Nigeria received $337,801,958

Nigeria was also in the top five receivers of bilateral aid for 2013. There are significant groups of migrants from Nigeria trying to reach Europe and the government says that a more stable and prosperous situation would "help reduce crime and illegal migration".

Kenya should consider donating too.

The problem with African petroeconomies is that while profits from oil, which are counted as part of GDP, are huge create "big" economies, the miners are foreigners and their profits are usually made by their sister companies. let me explain this for the benefit of girls like IanSweet here...

Shell, the mother company with headquarters in tax free places like Switzerland will do the prospecting for Nigerian oil. Shell will then sell the petroleum to its subsidiary, company X. But insignificant profits will be made by Shell company in order to avoid high taxes. company Company X (( these are the companies with stupid local names wink ), Registered in Switzerland, with an office in Nigeria, will sell the oil at the Swiss COMMODITY MARKET, where all countries buying minerals go for the same.

That's why Switzerland is so rich. ALL mineral companies are registered and have headquarters there.

So, is Nigeria worth more, theoretically, yes. Is Nigeria getting any of its worth? No. Reason, they do not profit from their resources. Because their minerals are mined by (and for) foreigners.

Add to it questionable policies like tax breaks?

So petroleum companies avoid tax, get tax breaks and pollute the entire place without any consequences, while transferring their profits to European tax heavens, and jobs to Europe and US.

Nigeria lost US$3.3billion of tax revenue to oil giants Shell, Total and ENI through a series of extraordinary tax breaks - a new report from ActionAid reveals.
Nigeria granted the tax breaks to the companies from 1999-2012, exempting them from corporate tax payments - according to the report Leaking Revenue. Nigeria has one of the highest child mortality rates in the world with more than one in ten children dying before the age of 5. It also has the fourth highest maternal mortality rate in the world with 814 women dying for every 100,000 live births.

The research raises further questions about whether developing countries are giving away billions of dollars in tax revenue unnecessarily. ActionAid’s research shows that the oil companies’ investment would have been highly profitable even without these harmful tax incentives. Previous ActionAid research shows that tax incentives like the one granted to Shell, Total and ENI cost developing countries at least $138bn every year.

The British-Dutch company Shell was the greatest beneficiary after being exempted from paying $1.66 billion - equivalent to more than the entire Nigerian annual health budget. French company Total was exempted from paying $977 million and Italian company Eni was exempted $677 million.

ActionAid is calling on Nigeria to publish and review its tax break policies and collaborate with other countries in West Africa to end harmful tax breaks The charity is also calling on multinational companies operating in Nigeria, such as Shell, to pay their fair share of tax and publish their tax payments in every country they operate, including details of tax breaks they’ve been given

Gerrrarrahia! You mean Nigeria budget for health is less than 1.66 bn $ ??!!
See why would someone want to give tax breaks in a mono economy esp anytime in the last decade. Unless of course, it ends up in someone's pocket. Robbing Paul to pay paul, in other words, it can't be done without tacit involvement of the big kahunas of the said place. In short, eating aka kula nyama .
Meanwhile, 100 mn people defecate in the open while all this goes on.
Doesn't make sense.

But Nigeria is also known for corruption.

I don't know how a leader gets away with this. Are Nigerians only noisy while insulting other countries? How does a government get away with this nonsense for decades?
