Been a while......
So I guess a virus ran through our class..
First it was Estavan.... he's the newest child and he just came back from a trip ( I strongly suspect he brought the virus with him) ...... thick catarrh
Then Kiki took over... vomiting and stooling.
Then IT............thick catarrh and fatigue
Then Demi...... vomiting, thick catarrh and weepy eyes.
Then Abby.......
Then Koko
Then Demi's little brother
Now we're fine.

They ended up sleeping till 3.30....

I'm not a Montessori teacher. I just began to learn it.
If your chid is age 4 below, I'd advise you to put him in a Preschool rather than a school that has nursery section. This because all the staff will be trained and expected to know how to teach/ interact with the kids.
When you scout for schools, the class structure will let you know whatsup....

In my classroom for example, you'll find shelves filled with hands-on things the kids can work with to develop fine motor skills and stimulate their senses.. Our board is mainly filled with notes we stuck on it with only a little space beneath where the kids can scribble and write. There is a reading corner filled with books.
The class is also grouped according to their capabilities.
For example in my school,.there are 4 classes only.
Class 1 has kids older than 1 but not yet 2. They dont write at all. They play a lot to develop gross motor skills.
Class 2 has kids that just clocked 2 or about to clock 2 but are more matured than their counterparts in Class 1. These kids are undergoing potty training and improve on fine motor skills. Their pencil grip will be improved upon with the help of a lot of montessori activities. They also learn to count and identify numbers, sound and identify single letters. At this stage, some are ready to write and are encouraged to.
Class 3( my class) has kids between 2-3. The 2 year olds are like 2years and 6 months to 3 years and 6 months. These kids are ready to write and encouraged too. Althou some get it faster than others. Now within the class, there are still subgroups; the exceeding, required and emerging groups. The exceeding groups are high flyers and we dont hold them back. At age 2, some are writing to 30 and blending 2 letter words. The required groups do what is the norm for their age range. The emerging group are the ones that really need us. At age 3, they can barely hold pencil the right way. They go at a slow pace and we understand that. The funny thing is most of the kids in.the emerging group are really smart when it.comes to audio-visual learning.
Class 4 has kids between 3-4. They have started reading proper and can write well except for the emerging group. Occasionally we throw our really high exceeder over there.
The structure of the school and class will hive an insight to what they say they offer.

My son did not start school until he was 3 years old. He was born in September. When some of my friend's kids that he was senior to started school, my wife was harassing me that i should send him saying that those he is senior to had started but i refused. I told her that i want his brain to develop first before starting at age 3. When he was 3, i took him to the school i wanted and he was given a test and they said that he cannot draw, he cannot paint and so on and so forth and because of that they will put him in KG 2. I refused telling them that age 3 is Nursery one and that i left him at home till he was 3 in order for him to develop his brain. When they were refusing to budge, i threatened to take him to another school that will accept him in nursery 1 at age 3 which is the right age for nursery one and then i will being him back to them when he is about to enter primary 1 at age 5. They caved in and grudgly took him saying that they doubt if he will cope and i just laugh and said that i was ready to bet with them that he will cope. He passed all the catholic schools entrance examination he did last year. He is now in JSS 2 in boarding house and he is doing very well. Those that i said started before him then are now in JSS 1. My principle has always been to develop the child's brain to maturity instead of rushing the child.

I agree with you. I also believe that some kids are special and can do a lot if given the right kind of push.
You see child prodigies don't become so overnight, it takes the capability of the child, parent and teacher.
I don't push or force kids to learn ( except my own child) , in fact I use the play method to teach.
If your child shows the tendency for something, as a parent you should encourage it.
Your child likes kicking things upandan? Get him a ball, coach him or fix him in a football academy.
You 2 year is pretending to read a book....albeit upside down, right the book up, point to each word as you read.
Your one year old loves to scribble, fix a crayon right on grip and let her colour all she wants.

My 4 year old can't read yet but he is a Math genius, will fix puzzles, is good at memory games and has the vocabulary of an average adult. He can also throw a nice kick and lands a solid punch, he learnt from watching Kungfu Panda and then we made necessary corrections.



A gentle push in the right direction won't hurt. Especially if the child loves it.
I once had a 4 year old in my class;Grade 1 he would bury his head in a book and read and read and read. He was my best student that year amidst plenty 5 and 6 year olds.

Tanx for these. U just gave me a better understanding of my 2nd son(4yrs): so smart(smarter than his elder bro(7yrs), who is academically brilliant), yet u wonder why he cant write or identify numbers or alphabets easily?!

@zaynie. Good one. I noticed the hotness in maths and hotness in spellings in my son. So i guided him accordingly. He is not that good in local languages(igbo, yoruba) but very good in French. He can speak English very well and spell any word but when it comes to writing exams in English, he is just above average which iam not really worried about because my intentions right from the beginning has been mathematics and the sciences. I was not also good in written English exam myself but can spell almost any word and construct sentences very well. . In the final analysis, parents should watch and pay attention to their kids and know what they are good and encourage and guide them accordingly.

Do not really know when you went to secondary school. Most of the reading books in this era are nothing to write home about. When i wanted to get my kids to read, i went for most of the books that were written in the 80s and early 90s. Those books were well structured and well written. I have a library of books for my kids that contain books like Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God, Tales out of School, One week one trouble, Eze goes to school, the lion and the jewel, chike and the river, no longer at ease, the beautiful ones are not yet born, animal farm, the gods are not blame. I have already compiled another twenty sets from the same era that i intend to buy such as: more tales out of school, trouble in form six, the three musketeers, adventures of tom samyer, eze goes to college, the african night entertainment, oliver twist, lamb tales from Shakespeare. These are the type of books that i believe simulates and develops the child brain. Some of these books have a glossary of vocabulary that the child can easily know the meanings.

I have them all, well preserved and even wrapped in bright colours to make them attractive. They have a floor to ceiling bookcase with the books arranged in order of their age and reading abilities. I take the books from there to read to them over the weekend. I read from there myself.

Hold the TV, bring out the books and see what happens.
The books should be something popular from TV and then print book review sheets online and encourage them to fill it. When they know they have to review the book, they will concentrate and focus on the book. You could let them watch one hour of TV for every 100 pages of book read. So they have to read 4 -25 page books....or 2-50 page books or one 100 and something page book.
Right now in my house, TV is on hiatus, that was when we became puzzle pros.

Only NEPA is sure to ruin our TV time

NEPA ruining the TV time is an added bonus because they will be forced to go and read. They might not necessary read class text especially during the holidays. That was why i went to get them those classic old novels. Iam now under serious pressure by them now to go and get the other 20 that they have compiled from the earlier ones they read. Na me come dey dodge now as the books are difficult to get. I even had to go to CSS bookshop one time but could not get them.

Please what's the appropriate age to enrol a child to school. Considering the fees i am hearing after scouting for schools i am considering allowing my LO to clock 2 before enrolling her. What do you think? Do they really teach them stuff that are tangible before age 2 in school? Please advice

If I was a stay at home mom with my teaching skills, I would say age 3-4 sef.
Let LO clock 2 but meanwhile work on
1. Potty training
2. Simple counting like 1-10
3. Pencil grip by scribbling on sand trays, picking objects with the thumb, fore and middle fingers, working with play dough, colouring with attention on these 3 fingers ( dont let her hold the crayon with a stab), also direct her to colour within the lines.
4. Identification of the colours
5. Identification of body parts : touch your eyes, lift your foot etc

She doesnt have to be perfect in all the above. Just a basic knowledge and introduction. Something to keep her busy.
It should be fun o.....no carry cane
