Dear all,

I am a relationship manager of a big firm, I help them make tax payments every month. This month I mistakenly paid about 400k as tax (meant for another state) instead of 13k to Delta state.

I have written several letters and mails to the accountant general through the bank I made the payment, but they have ignored my plea.

My boss has informed me that I would lose my job if the money isn't reversed by the end of this month.

Please help me!. What steps can I take to get the money black.

I think it's time you get a lawyer since they've refused to acknowledge the overdraft.
Someone, somewhere is playing smart with your money.

A financial lawyer will know the next line of action.
And if you have a lawyer friend, seek advice.

Normally, they ought to contact you to confirm the abnormalities - but this is Nigeria.

Bros, I honestly wished I had the cash to do this. I am a graduate trainee and don't have enough to get the services of a lawyer

Write a letter to the agency in question. Address it to the CEO and Chief accountant.
Follow up with a visit to to the agency and insist on seeing the accountant in charge.
Do not beg, you're there on business.
State your case clearly, politely and concisely. Ask for immediate restitution.
Do not leave until your case file has been retrieved in your presence and your matter acted upon.

If you do this properly, the worst that will happen is that they will agree to offset the balance against future tax payments.

OR

If the issue is still fresh you may ask for a bank reversal. This is difficult but not impossible if you can convince the bank that the money was wrongly paid. (I rate your chances low since much time apparently has elapsed)

People overpay government all the time. If they know their rights, they get their refund.

P.S.
Start looking for a new job and if you do get one, move on as soon as the issue is resolved. Your boss obviously values your services less than he values 400,000 naira; you need not concur with his low estimate of you.

I immediately wrote for a reversal with sufficient proof, I visited asaba last week and was told that the accountant is not around, so I can't see him. That I should come back next year

The clerk however said if I know someone in a big post and settle the person I might get it back. My salary isn't even sufficient to fund 5trips to asaba not to talk of settling big people I don't know

You dont need to know "someone in a big post". You need a sense of purpose, complete documentation and persistence.

If they don't respond after the holidays, do another letter and CC: EFCC, ICPC, DSS, NPF and other agencies. Make sure you refer to the previous letter that was not acknowledged/replied.

Some agencies respond when they are aware that EFCC and ICPC are notified.

Sorry op. in as far u mistakenly paid that money into Delta state government account, there is no way u can get that money back, that's how they and theirs banks behave.

Where is ur company located? I know the accountant general of Delta state. But since this involves a government acct, it might take long for it to be refunded if ever it will be refunded. It will require a lot of documentation.

yes o, cus u re not the first to do that, the staff of the bank will just tell u that the money is already in the government account and there is nothing they can do.
