As we all know, biochemistry is one of the most difficult courses to study in the University.
Presently there are challenges faced with the course including job opportunities.
My questions are
1. What is the way forward in this course?
2. Are they better job opportunities?
3. Are they measures that can be taken to make it easier to learn In our institutions?
4. Does our country Nigeria really appreciate this course as other western countries do?

Please your advice and contributions are needed

My dear, I studied biochemistry and graduated with a 2'1 from one of the federal universities but currently doing a second degree in pharmacy. I must tell you sincerely that biochemistry has very limited job prospects in Nigeria especially now that there is recession. Banks that used to come to the rescue no longer employ as before. No good pharmaceutical company employs them because you are not not a pharmacist and would not be able to properly teach/detail doctors, pharmacists and other medical practitioners about drugs. Many of them will not even listen to you. The over-the-counter medicines are usually given to van drivers to sell. The only people in the pharmaceutical industry that can employ you are the one-man companies and indians, and I must tell you that the conditions are usually very unfavourable. Very low wages and some will even ask for your degree cert as a collateral and they will give you products at high prices such that you won't make extra profit. I walked that path so I know better.

My advice to you is to write JAMB and choose a professional course. Or if you have a flair for teaching you can continue, but know that you can only be fit for lecturing job when u have done a PhD and that would take years after first degree, unless you are highly connected to get GA after masters.
Cheers

I studied Biochemistry too, currently teaching Chemistry and Agricultural science in a private secondary school in Ondo city. Planning to do my 2nd degree in Medicine and surgery very very soon. with the herculean task that Biochemistry students face in school, we ought not go leave university and face another dilemma in getting job.
my advice for Biochemistry/Medical biochemistry graduates
1. further to do masters and/or PhD to improve your academic status quo and improve your chances of getting job as a lecturer.
2. further with a 2nd degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing or any other medical inclined course.
3. Humbly teach in a secondary school as Biology or chemistry teacher and learn trade like AC fitting, computer/phone repair, plumbing, painting etc.
Have a nice day
