I registered on Fiverr on the 22nd of July, 2016 having gone through a thread created by Beatzone in the Business section of Nairaland. Within the 5 months, I did not work for about 25 days because of some personal stuff that needed attention. Therefore technically, I could say that I made it in 4 months. When I registered on Fiverr in July, I promised myself that I will only create thread about Fiverr on Nairaland when I attain the level 2 status and have gained a good experience on how the platform works. This thread is the fulfillment of that promise. I am doing this on the first day in 2017 to lift someone out of poverty, the poverty trap or provide a means for people who needed a part time income source. Are you going to be the one? Time will tell. In the meantime, just follow this thread. I will surely, unlike most of my threads, see this to a logical conclusion.

What is Academic Writing?

Academic writing is different from the normal blog or website writing. It is a little bit more technical and requires training and experience. The good news is that everyone who has gone through the rigor of higher education (college of education, polytechnic or university) must have engaged in this type of writing (although at various difficulty levels). Stay tuned as I combine my experience in academic writing (over 7 years) with my 5 months experience on Fiverr (A platform where I discovered that academic writing is a goldmine that can make one forget paid employment and still live a good life). Let me say this, with time, making $2,000 every month (or even more) is very possible on the platform with academic writing knowledge.

Prospects of Academic Writing on Fiverr
Academic writing on Fiverr is less competitive when compared to the normal blog or website writing (what is generally referred to as article writing). How did I know this? Well I created a Gig in the article section (I later paused it) and discovered that within a minute of publishing request by buyer (in the buyers request section) , you already have about 30 offers (bids) submitted. This is not so for the academic writing (Research & Summary). It might take more than 5 hours to get 20 bids on a request. This indicates that the article writing (blog, website) is more competitive.
I am going to use some of my old posts on academic writing that is relevant to this thread (There is no sense in re-inventing the wheel).

There are so many types of academic writing. From my experience, however, those listed above are very common. Besides, clients are willing to pay good money ( I mean correct ego, kudi or owo)for them if you can do and known to do a good job. Once u are able to climb to the top of the food chain (something I am still trying to do), some employers pay as high as $30 per page! or for just appx 275 words). Can you beat that?! Well, I don't know about you but for me, from a very humble background, that's a good deal particularly if you are a fast writer.

Academic Writing in Perspective
Academic writing is just like any other writing structured into introduction, body and conclusion. The fundamental differences between academic writing and any other writing are in the area of use of 'language' and 'citation'/ bibliography (references). It is important to note that academic writing uses formal language and discourages the use of informal language (personalised). In other words, the use of phrase and sentence like "in my opinion" or " I believe in the nearest future, humans will be able to live on Mars" respectively, are frowned at. Instead of using a phrase like 'in my opinion', it is more appropriate to use something like 'the foregoing suggests that' or 'it is evident that'. The bottom line is that your writing should be based on facts or valid assumptions derived from existing facts, theories etc.
It is also noteworthy to understand that academic writing (just like any other quality writing) does not allow direct 'lifting' of secondary data or information even if it is properly cited. Any lifting must be put in a quote (i.e. "" ) and referenced appropriately. This will be treated extensively under how to avoid plagiarism. How to avoid plagiarism is a topic that will come up later during the course of updating the thread.
It is also very important to let you know that academic writing requires ability to make a valid summary of voluminous write-up. That is the only way to avoid plagiarism- a serious offence in academic writing. You must be able to identify points, facts and positions in a write-up. In short, academic writing requires one to develop reading culture (a culture that is fast-eroding in Nigerian society).
Please, read carefully the information above and make a decision if you still want to learn academic writing. "Money dey yanfo yanfo but u go work o".

Academic write-ups are numerous. What I refer to here is a write-up that requires the conduct of a research or summary with proper citations.

To buttress my submission on how lucrative academic writing is, here is a current order for between 6000-7000 words (about 23 pages). A page was charged for approximately $13 (Convert that to naira).

Thesis or Dissertation
To leverage on familiarity, I would start with thesis or dissertation or what some students simply refer to as 'project'. Every graduate should be familiar with 'project', thesis or dissertation, hence, the reason for treating it first.

Thesis or Dissertation
Thesis, Dissertation or 'project' is structured in different ways depending on format favoured by an educational institution. In fact, within a particular institution, departments often have their own formats. Also, thesis or dissertation format or structure usually varies by 'discipline' or field of study. The structure of a computer engineering thesis may be different from those in agricultural sciences or Civil engineering.
Bottom line: To write a particular thesis either for yourself or for money, lay your hand on format, 'chapterisation' or template favoured by the institution or department. In the absence of this format, ask a lot of questions.
To avoid repetition, I will only use 'thesis' subsequently. Just know that this refers to project, dissertation or thesis.

Background of a study is very important because this is where you create the first impression about your thesis. Here, there is a saying that 'do not bury the lead'. That is, do not bury the main idea or problem around which your study revolves (otherwise referred to as 'thesis') too deep into the write-up. Don't get confused. Thesis, in this case, does not refer to the whole project or dissertation but key idea, point, phenomenon or problem that inform your study or around which your study revolves.

A good thesis statement tries to provide information about underlying issue.
A good thesis statement should be as specific as possible.

You have asked intelligent questions.
Making sure that your clients contact you first is the key. You have to emphasize in your Gig description that your client should contact you first before making an order. To achieve this, make sure that you state clearly and in bold in your Gig the need for this contact as a prerequisite to getting the high quality work that you promise. I understand that some clients don't even read the Gig description. During my sojourn on Fiverr, I only had just one instance of such situation. I cancel thGe order 'shaperly'-no time to waste time.

I have only outsourced twice when I had just 2 days to deliver a large order having come back from the 25 days out-of-Fiverr experience but I got shitty deliveries. There are so many incompetent academic writers on fiverr. I just had to beg the client to extend the time and fix things myself. If you can have someone to outsource to, however, you just hit a goldmine
